ഭാര്യയും മൂന്ന് കുട്ടികളുമൊത്ത് താമസിക്കുന്ന രമേശ്, സുവിശേഷം പ്രസംഗിക്കുന്നതിനായി തന്റെ ഭർതൃവീട്ടുകാർ താമസിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഗ്രാമം സന്ദർശിച്ചിരുന്നു. ആ ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ ഒരു യുവതി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ശുശ്രൂഷയിലൂടെ ക്രിസ്തുവിൽ വിശ്വസിച്ചു. പിന്നീട്, അവളുടെ കുടുംബം അവളുടെ വിവാഹം ക്രമീകരിച്ചു, രമേശും ഭാര്യയും അനുയോജ്യമായ ഒരു വരനെ കണ്ടെത്താൻ സഹായിച്ചു. ഇരുവശത്തുനിന്നും സമ്മതത്തോടെയാണ് വിവാഹം നടന്നത്.

പോലീസ് അന്വേഷണം നടത്താതെ എഫ്‌ഐആർ ഫയൽ ചെയ്തതായി റിപ്പോർട്ടുകൾ പറയുന്നു. തിരിച്ചെത്തിയപ്പോൾ രമേഷിനെ അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തു, പരാതിയിൽ ഭാര്യയെയും അമ്മായിയപ്പനെയും ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അന്ന് രാത്രി തന്നെ അവരെ ആദ്യം വിട്ടയച്ചെങ്കിലും, ദിവസങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം ഔപചാരിക കുറ്റപത്രം സമർപ്പിച്ചു. കോടതിയിൽ വാദം കേട്ട അതേ ദിവസം തന്നെ രമേശിന് ജാമ്യം ലഭിച്ചു, എന്നാൽ ഭാര്യയെയും പിതാവിനെയും എട്ട് ദിവസം ജയിലിലടച്ചു, തുടർന്ന് സെഷൻസ് കോടതി ജാമ്യം അനുവദിച്ചു.

നിയമം ഭേദഗതി ചെയ്തതിനുശേഷം MPFRA പ്രകാരം ആദ്യത്തെ ശിക്ഷാവിധികളിൽ ഒന്നായി കേസ് ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. രമേശിന്റെ അമ്മായിയപ്പൻ എല്ലാ കുറ്റങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും കുറ്റവിമുക്തനാക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

Ramesh Ahirwar, an evangelist from the Brethren Church and a humble auto driver from Madhya Pradesh, is facing legal trouble after being accused of forced religious conversion under the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (MPFRA), 2021.

Ramesh, who lives with his wife and three children, had visited a village where his in-laws live to preach the gospel. A young woman in that village came to faith in Christ through his ministry. Later, her family arranged her marriage, and Ramesh and his wife helped in finding a suitable groom. The wedding took place with consent from both sides.

However, after a few months, the woman returned to her parents’ home due to alleged abuse and dowry-related mistreatment from her husband’s family. Upset by her return, the in-laws accused Ramesh and his wife of forcing her to convert to Christianity and filed a police complaint while Ramesh was away in Delhi.

According to reports, police filed an FIR without investigation. Ramesh was arrested upon returning, and his wife and father-in-law were also named in the complaint. While they were initially released that night, formal charges were filed days later. Ramesh received bail on the same day of his court hearing, but his wife and her father were sent to jail for eight days before being granted bail by the Sessions Court.

The legal process forced Ramesh to sell his ancestral land and take a loan to cover legal expenses. During this time, he connected with Persecution Relief, a Christian organisation supporting persecuted believers in India. The group helped with legal aid, covered the fines, and supported the family through the trial.

The court eventually sentenced Ramesh and his wife to two years in prison along with a fine of ₹25,000 each. However, Persecution Relief’s legal team successfully secured temporary protection from arrest through the High Court as they prepare for appeal.

The case is notable as one of the first convictions under MPFRA since the law was amended. Ramesh’s father-in-law was acquitted of all charges.

Despite the challenges, the family remains strong in faith. Their story sheds light on the increasing persecution against Christians in the country, while also encouraging many fellow believers to stand firm in their faith amidst rising opposition.

Aadhaar enrolment for newborns along with birth certificates is expected to be available in all states in the next few months, expanding beyond 16 states currently offering the facility, government sources said. At present, 16 states have Aadhaar Linked Birth Registration. The process began more than one year ago, with various states getting added over time.

Work is on in remaining states and Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) — the government agency that issues Aadhaar numbers — expects that over the next few months all states will be able to offer the facility, bringing added convenience to new parents.

For children up to 5 years, no biometrics is captured. Their UID is processed on the basis of demographic information and facial photograph linked with the UID of their parents. Hence, biometric update is required (ten fingers, iris and facial photograph) once the child turns 5 and 15.

More than 1,000 state and central government schemes today leverage Aadhaar for identification and authentication of beneficiaries, transfer of benefits, and ensuring de-duplication. Of these, nearly 650 schemes are of state governments and 315 central government-run schemes — all of which use Aadhaar ecosystem and its biometric authentication.

As many as 134 crore Aadhaars have been issued till date. Last year, updates and enrolments for this 12-digit biometric identifier added to nearly 20 crore. Of this, 4 crore were new enrolments, a number that includes newborn babies and children up to 18 years. Only 30 lakh were related to new adult enrolments.

The sources said the aims is now to ensure that at the time of birth along with the birth certificate, Aadhaar is issued. UIDAI is working with the Registrar General of India regarding the same. The process requires computerised system of birth registration, and such states that had full computerisation have been onboarded.

The full list of states with Aadhaar Linked Birth Registration was not immediately available.

Sources said that in 16 states whenever a birth certificate is issued, a message pings to the UIDAI system, following which enrolment ID number is generated. Aadhaar is generated as soon as details such as photo and address of the child is captured in the system. Birth Registrars, in many cases, are Aadhaar enrolment agents also, so they will be able to enrol for Aadhaar, sources said.
