Bangladesh Nationalist Party Speaks Out Against Persecution
Bangladesh – At a gathering organized by the Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Welfare Front in Bangladesh this past Saturday, the head of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) made strong statements about religious freedom in his country. He remarked that the government, headed by the ruling Bangladesh Awami League, had failed to protect religious minorities. He highlighted that in addition to the troubles confronting Hindu and Buddhist communities, the lands and homes of defenseless Christians have faced attacks. The BNP leader pointed out that while the government has tried to speak out against communalism, which drives the various communities of the country to harass and attack one another, it has failed to follow through with action. “In order to restore the people’s voting rights, protect human rights, establish peace in this country, we should uproot all the seeds of communalism in this country,” he said.
In justifying his harsh criticisms of religious freedom in Bangladesh, he referenced a recent report from the U.S. Department of State. This report, released on June 2, reviewed the experiences of religious communities in Bangladesh in 2021. The report shows that Bangladeshi Christians face various kinds of persecution. Christian members of ethnic minorities are forced to contend with evictions and land seizures stemming from land disputes. Christian converts from Hinduism or Islam are treated to crushing social isolation from their families and communities. Overall, there are also many reports of attacks and harassment against Christians by Muslim radicals. The brother of a Christian student murdered by a mob of Muslim students in May of last year said, “As Christians, we are a long way from enjoying security and justice.” With religious freedom sorely lacking in Bangladesh, we pray that God would continue to provide and care for his persecuted Church in the country.

ദുബായ്: കുട്ടികൾക്ക് തൊഴിൽ എടുക്കാൻ അനുമതി നൽകി കൊണ്ട് നിയമം കൊണ്ടുവന്ന് ദുബായ്. 15 തികഞ്ഞ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്കാണ് തൊഴിൽ ചെയ്യാൻ അനുമതി നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. മാനവ വിഭവശേഷി സ്വദേശിവൽക്കരണ മന്ത്രാലയം ആണ് പുതിയ നിയമം പുറത്തിറക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ജോലി ചെയ്തു തൊഴിൽ പരിചയം ഉണ്ടാവുക മാത്രമല്ല അവർക്ക് പ്രവൃത്തിപരിചയ സർട്ടിഫിക്കറ്റും ലഭിക്കും. എന്നാൽ കർശന നിബന്ധനകളോടെയാണ് കുട്ടികൾക്ക് ജോലി ചെയ്യാൻ സർക്കാൻ അനുമതി നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്.
കുട്ടികൾ ജോലിക്കായി എത്തുമ്പോൾ മാതാപിതാക്കളുടെ സമ്മതപത്രം അത്യാവശ്യമാണ്. മൂന്ന് മാസത്തേക്ക് ആണ് തൊഴിൽ കരാറിൽ വിദ്യാർഥികൾക്ക് ഒപ്പുവെക്കാം. ജോലിയുടെ സ്വഭാവം കരാറിൽ വ്യക്കമാക്കിയിരിക്കണം. എത്ര രൂപ ശമ്പളം നൽകും, എത്ര ദിവസം ആഴ്ചയിൽ അവധി നൽകും, ഒരു ദിവസം എത്ര സമയം ജോലി ചെയ്യണം എന്നിവയെല്ലാം കരാറിൽ എഴുതിയിരിക്കണം. കരാർ വ്യവസ്ഥകൾ ലംഘിച്ചാൽ ശക്തമായ നിയമ നടപടി സ്വീകരിക്കേണ്ടി വരും. വ്യവസ്ഥകൾ ലംഘിച്ചിട്ട് വിദ്യാർഥികളെ തൊഴിലെടുപ്പിക്കാൻ പാടില്ല.
തൊഴിൽ പരിശീലനങ്ങൾക്ക് മന്ത്രാലയം പരിധി നിശ്ചയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഫാക്ടറികളിൽ രാത്രി സമയത്ത് ജോലി ചെയ്യിക്കരുത്. രാത്രി 8 മുതൽ രാവിലെ 6 വരെ കുട്ടികൾക്ക് തൊഴിൽ പരിശീലനം അനുവദിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. 6 മണിക്കൂറിൽ കൂടുതൽ അവരെ കൊണ്ട് ജോലി ചെയ്യിപ്പിക്കരുത്. ഭക്ഷണം, പ്രാർഥന തുടങ്ങിയ കാര്യങ്ങൾ ചെയ്യാൻ ഒരു മണിക്കൂർ സമയം അനുവദിക്കണം. വിശ്രമം നൽകാതെ നാല് മണിക്കൂറിൽ കൂടുതൽ ജോലി ചെയ്യിപ്പിക്കരുത്. പരിശീലനസമയം തൊഴിൽ സമയമായി കണക്കാക്കി വേതനം നൽകണം. തൊഴിൽ പരിശീലനങ്ങൾ പൂർത്തിയാക്കി ഇറങ്ങുന്നവർക്ക് സർട്ടിഫിക്കറ്റ് നൽകണം. എന്നാൽ തൊഴിൽ പരിശീലന സമയത്ത് ഇവർക്ക് സേവനകാല ആനുകൂല്യങ്ങൾക്ക് അർഹത ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കില്ല. തൊഴിൽ കരാറിലുള്ള അവധിയല്ലാതെ മറ്റു അവധി ദിനങ്ങളും അധിക ആനുകൂല്യങ്ങളും അനുവദിക്കില്ല.

അജ്മാൻ ഭരണാധികാരി ഷെയ്ഖ് ഹുമൈദ് ബിൻ റാഷിദ് അൽ നുമൈനി 93 തടവുകാർക്ക് മോചനം നൽകി. ഷാർജ ഭരണാധികാരിയും സുപ്രീം കൗൺസിൽ അംഗവുമായ ഷെയ്ഖ് സുൽത്താൻ ബിൻ മുഹമ്മദ് അൽ ഖ്വാസിമി 194 തടവുകാർക്കും മോചനം നൽകിയെന്നും വാർത്താ ഏജൻസി റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്തു. വിവിധ കേസുകളില്‍ ശിക്ഷയില്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നവര്‍ക്കാണു മോചനം.

Pakistan – Human rights groups have reported that roughly 1,000 Christian and Hindu girls are kidnapped annually in Pakistan, to be subjected to rape, forced conversion, and forced marriages to Muslim men. One religious freedom advocate, however, says that the true number of kidnappings is twice that previously reported by other observers. Shahid Mobeen, professor of philosophy at the Pontifical University in Rome, asserts that about 2,000 forced conversions and marriages take place every year in Pakistan. Mobeen, who spoke on the issue at last week’s International Religious Freedom Summit in Washington, DC, contends that the collective observations of volunteers, nuns, and lawyers testify to this much higher estimate.
While not always the case, Mobeen explains that the perpetrators of these crimes against women are usually family friends. The women that they target are often also not women at all, but merely young girls between the ages of 10 and 14. Even despite the alarming severity of these crimes, Pakistan’s Christian community has little leverage in the country to pursue justice against guilty parties. Christians only make up 2% of the nation’s population, and their government is not a strong defender of minority rights. The U.S. Department of State has designated Pakistan as a “Country of Particular Concern” in part for this reason.
Persistent advocacy is necessary to influence the Pakistani authorities to change course. One example of the impact of such advocacy can be seen in the case of a 15-year-old Catholic girl who was rescued from her abductors in late May. Police investigators showed no initiative to recover her from her kidnappers, but when protestors and advocates organized by the National Minorities Alliance of Pakistan (NMAP) pressured authorities, they finally took action and returned the girl to her family. Sadly, so many more kidnapped girls remain captive, like the 16-year-old Christian girl kidnapped in April. We pray that justice would come to Pakistan for these persecuted women and girls.
