Indian Police Slow to Investigate Vandalism
This week, Catholics in central India organized a silent protest over the recent vandalism of a local pilgrimage center. The incident occurred on the night of July 2 and was noticed the next day. The perpetrators badly damaged statues of Jesus and Mother Mary. They also damaged other statues installed at 14 Stations of the Cross, leaving only 3 untouched. Speaking to UCA News, a local parish priest lamented, “The statues were standing intact until 4 in the evening on July 2. What happened later is not known to us.” The priest immediately made a complaint to local police, but authorities have made no progress in their investigation.
The protestors who gathered earlier this week voiced their outrage specifically against the police for their lack of progress in pursuing the perpetrators responsible for this vandalism. The local priest explained, “We want the police to take immediate action against those who are behind this attack.” The police inspector in charge of the investigation told media that his department was actively pursuing investigations and that the suspects would be apprehended soon, but local Christians remain upset. The president of a local Christian rights group lambasted police tardiness and asserted that he would soon petition the Indian state’s governor and chief minister to intervene.
Police inaction in cases involving Christians is far from uncommon in India. Christians in central India have frequently accused government and police officials of ignoring persecution against them. In addition to attacking Christian people and property, radical Hindu nationalists throughout India have often even used the power of the law against Christians by falsely accusing them of the forced conversions. We pray that authorities in central India investigating this case of vandalism would break with this prolific pattern of injustice and successfully apprehend the perpetrators responsible for the recent attack against Christians.

കെ.എസ്.ഇ.ബിയുടെ പേരും ഔദ്യോഗിക വെബ്‌സൈറ്റും ദുരുപയോഗം ചെയ്താണ് തട്ടിപ്പ്. എത്രയും വേഗം പണമടച്ചില്ലെങ്കിലോ ആധാര്‍ നമ്പര്‍ വൈദ്യുതി കണക്ഷനുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്തിയില്ലെങ്കിലോ വൈദ്യുതി വിച്ഛേദിക്കുമെന്ന തരത്തിലാണ് എസ്.എം.എസ്, വാട്ട്‌സ്അപ്പ് സന്ദേശങ്ങള്‍ ലഭിക്കുക. ആദ്യം ഇംഗ്ലീഷില്‍ ലഭിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന സന്ദേശങ്ങള്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ മലയാളത്തിലും അയച്ചാണ് തട്ടിപ്പ് വ്യാപകമാക്കിയിട്ടുള്ളത്.
സന്ദേശത്തില്‍ കൊടുത്തിട്ടുള്ള മൊബൈല്‍ നമ്പരില്‍ ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടാല്‍ കെ.എസ്.ഇ.ബിയുടെ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്‍ എന്ന വ്യാജേനെ സംസാരിക്കും. പിന്നീട് ടീം വ്യൂവര്‍ പോലുള്ള മൊബൈല്‍ ആപ്ലിക്കേഷന്‍ ഡൗണ്‍ലോഡ് ചെയ്യപ്പെടും. സന്ദേശത്തിലുള്ള ലിങ്ക് തുറന്നാല്‍ ചെന്നെത്തുക കെ.എസ്.ഇ.ബിയുടെ വെബ് പേജിലാണ്. പണമടയ്ക്കാനില്ലെങ്കിലും കഴിഞ്ഞ മാസത്തെ ബില്ലുമായി 10 രൂപയുടെ വ്യത്യാസമുണ്ടെന്നും ഇതടയ്ക്കണമെന്നുമാണ് അടുത്ത നിര്‍ദ്ദേശം. ഇതടയ്ക്കുന്നതോടെ ഉപഭോക്താക്കളുടെ ബാങ്ക് അക്കൗണ്ട്, ഒ.ടി.പി വിവരങ്ങള്‍ എന്നിവ നേരത്തെ ഡൗണ്‍ലോഡ് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട ആപ്ലിക്കേഷനിലൂടെ തട്ടിപ്പുകാര്‍ക്ക് ലഭിക്കുന്നു. തുടര്‍ന്ന് അക്കൗണ്ടിലുള്ള പണം തട്ടിയെടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും.

India – This week in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, a private school manager has joined the list of those charged by authorities with violating the state’s anti-conversion law. Authorities also charged the private school manager under the federal Penal Code with “deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings.” The charges come as a result of complaints made by students’ parents, who disapproved of Islamic prayers being recited at Florets International School. The principal of the school indicated that the practice of reciting prayers from four religions (Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, and Christianity), had taken place at the school since 2003 with no issue. In response to these complaints, though, the school has phased out the religious prayers, and students now only sing the national anthem.
The recent criminal charges against this private school manager have raised concerns for Christian educators in the Indian state. A church official in the area commented to UCA News, “I am very surprised that an incident like this has happened as there were no reports of such cases in our localities in the past.” He warned that all educational institutions should be more careful now, and that they should make sure to follow all state guidelines.
While the outcome of this legal case has yet to be determined, the exercise of anti-conversion laws in the realm of education threatens greater oppression against India’s Christians. These Christians are already forced to worry about anti-conversion laws in their day-to-day lives—authorities arrested six Christian women at a Christian birthday celebration just last week. Legal threats in the area of education will only serve to exacerbate those fears. We pray that Christians in all areas of life in India would be shielded from the malicious weaponization of anti-conversion laws in the country.
