India must end its hatred and violence against all religions:At the UN
India has urged the international community to jointly combat violence against all religions, including Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism, as it recalled that the shattering of the iconic Bamiyan Buddha statues in Afghanistan by the Taliban stands as a testimony to what hate against other religions can do.
India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti said the emergence of contemporary forms of religiophobia, especially anti-Hindu, anti-Buddhist and anti-Sikh phobias is a matter of serious concern and needs the attention of the U.N. to address this threat.
He spoke at a special virtual event on Friday on the occasion of the International Day of Human Fraternity organised by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in partnership with the Permanent Missions of Egypt and the United Arab Emirates to the UN.
“The spirit of human fraternity also enjoins us to combat hate and violence not just against Abrahamic religions but combat hate and violence against all religions, including Sikhism, Buddhism and Hinduism. The shattering of the iconic Bamiyan Buddhas, to name one tragic event, stands as a testimony to what hate against other religions can do,” he said.
The Taliban had destroyed the 6th-century sandstone statues of Buddha at Bamiyan in 2001. Former Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar had ordered the use of tanks and artillery to bombard and dynamite the huge statues carved in enormous mountain niches.
India has been consistently underlining that the trend of highlighting certain religious phobias has of late become prominent.
Earlier this month, Mr. Tirumurti said the U.N. had highlighted some of them over the years, like those based on Islamophobia, Christianophobia and antisemitism—the three Abrahamic religions.
While these three find a mention in the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, new phobias, hatred or bias against other major religions of the world need also to be fully recognized, he said.
“The emergence of contemporary forms of religiophobia, especially anti-Hindu, anti-Buddhist and anti-Sikh phobias is a matter of serious concern and needs the attention of the UN and all Member States to address this threat. It is only then can we bring greater balance into our discussion on such topics,” Mr. Tirumurti had said.
The U.N. General Assembly adopted a resolution in December 2020 proclaiming February 4 as the International Day of Human Fraternity to be observed every year. India had co-sponsored the resolution last year.
The resolution co-facilitated by Egypt and the United Arab Emirates takes note of efforts and initiatives aimed at promoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue including the meeting between Pope Francis and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmad al-Tayeb, in February 2019 in Abu Dhabi, UAE that resulted in the signing of the ‘Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace & living Together’.
Tirumurti noted that the day marks the meeting in Abu Dhabi in 2019 between the heads of two major religions of the world.
“This meeting not only underlines the importance of deepening the understanding between these two Abrahamic religions but in fact between all religions and faiths as well,” he said.
He stressed that like the International Day of Human Fraternity, international days are days that should “seek to bring all of us together as one family and be celebrated in an inclusive manner, and should not seek to divide us.” As the resolution to commemorate the International Day of Human Fraternity reaffirms, there is a need to commit “ourselves to pluralistic traditions. Pluralism is the protective sheath in which human fraternity blossoms.
This is in line with our own belief that The World is One Family – ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’,” Mr. Tirumurti said.
The U.N. said that celebrating human fraternity and the values it embodies such as mutual respect, diversity of cultures and religions, advancing intercultural and interreligious dialogue “reminds us of the common values that we share as one humanity.”
“This spirit is particularly needed at a time when many communities are divided across religious, ethnic and cultural lines,” it said.
The world body said that growing religious hatred, stigma and manifestations of various forms of discrimination against vulnerable communities, including minorities, are an affront to human rights and U.N. values.
“Such vile acts risk undermining global efforts to recover and rebuild better in a post-pandemic era,” it said.
Mr. Tirumurti said the International Day is an occasion for the international community to renew its commitment to the human fraternity by promoting pluralism, cultural diversity and advancing dialogue and understanding between religions, cultures and civilisations for fostering a genuine culture of peace.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his message for the day, said that the human family faces a cascade of challenges, from deepening poverty and widening inequalities to conflict, division, and mistrust.
“To confront them, we need to challenge those who exploit differences, traffic in hate, and instill fear of ‘The Other’ in anxious hearts. Around the world, we see a rise in hate speech, intolerance, discrimination and even physical attacks against people, simply because of their religion or belief, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation,” Mr. Guterres said.
He called on the international community to commit to stand firm against bigotry wherever and whenever it occurs and to recognise that “our diversity as a richness that strengthens us all.”

“This is not just a celebration of Christianity; it’s about recognizing the contributions of Christian communities to every aspect of Canadian society,” said Banerjei. “By celebrating Christian Heritage Month, we honor the diversity that makes Canada strong and the faith that has shaped this great nation.”
Councillor Lilly Cheng added, “There’s so much good and beauty in Christianity. So, I don’t think it’s something to be ashamed of to say I’m Christian. This is an important day for our city and the Canadian people.”
As December approaches, churches across Toronto, Vaughan, Durham Region, and beyond are preparing events, services, and outreach activities to mark this historic occasion. LONDON – An ex-Muslim turned Christian evangelist has been beaten, chased by angry mobs, unlawfully jailed and even stabbed, all for the sake of the Gospel.
This is not in Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia. It is officially happening in Christian Britain.
Her name is Hatun Tash, and what has been done to her has even caught the attention of the British media.
Tash grew up in Turkey as a Muslim and became a Christian after moving to England. And being an ex-Muslim speaking out against Islam has made her a target.
She told us she has changed residences more than 50 times in the past four years because she knows Muslims are looking for her in order to kill her. One man has already been sentenced to 24 years in prison for trying.
Because of this ongoing danger, she asked that we interview her from a secret location.
Tash told us her conversion to Christ began when she learned the truth about Islam and Mohammed.
“As I read biography, it was very disturbing to me. So, the man you grew up to love and honor suddenly turns out to be like, yeah, not good, not good. And I decided, I can’t be Muslim.”
Then she learned about a very different God than the one of Islam, telling us, “As you dig into it, you get to meet with a God who is not silent or far or distant from you, but you meet with a God who loves you, who pours out himself on you. And not only that, He just puts himself on the cross and then says, ‘I love you from everlasting to everlasting, Come to me.'”
Tash began sharing this message to Muslims at Speakers Corner, in London’s Hyde Park, where speakers climb atop stepladders and vigorous debates ensue, often between Muslims and Christians.
Her preaching and criticism of Islam has sometimes enraged Muslims, and three years ago a man slashed her face with a knife. He has never been caught.
She however has been arrested unlawfully more than once. The London Police have twice paid her damages for wrongful arrests, including two years ago when she refused to leave the area where she was preaching. Tash was forcibly marched through Hyde Park, followed by Muslims celebrating her arrest. She was placed in a police van, strip-searched, and jailed.
This has not stopped Tash from going to mosques and sharing the Gospel daily.
“I would simply stand in front of the mosques, and I’d say ‘Muhammad is a false prophet. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Tell me, what is your objections?’ Hundreds of Muslims just stop and then they want to talk to you. Sometimes you get harmed, sometimes it gets dangerous. Sometimes you end up in hospitals, sometimes you end up in people’s homes for a cup of tea,” Tash said.
“I don’t care whether people reject me or not. They need to hear the gospel,” she said.
Christian Concern’s Christian Legal Centre has defended Tash. Christian Concern’s Andrea Williams told us, “The truth is that those that have attempted to kill her have been caught on camera. The police know who they are, but they have not been arrested. She is feared by and targeted by Muslim groups because she is fearless for the gospel. She loves Jesus so much that nothing will halt her.”
Tash says she will continue to preach and continue to challenge Islam.
“Things are dangerous. Should I choose to stay silent? Like when people are spending 5,000 Pounds to buy a gun, to shoot you and shoot your loved ones? The Gospel is so glorious, I cannot be silent. And the Lord is the giver of life. So, when it’s my time, He will take me home. But until He gives me breath, we continue to preach.”
