Extreme Cold Hits Midwest, Northeast: 10 Dead
The bitter cold in Chicago has kept hospitals busy, with doctors at one facility during the brunt of an Arctic freeze treating 50 frostbite victims, including some people who may lose an arm or a leg.
“It’s a horrific situation,” says Dr. Stathis Poulakidas, the head of burn and wound care services at Cook County Health.
Poulakidas works at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, a level 1 trauma center, that in a really bad year will see 150 cases of frostbite for the season. He said based on what he has seen thus far, this could be one of those years.
Half of the patients that came in over the past few days are homeless, while others had jobs that kept them out.
Poulakidas said they’ve seen “horrific injuries to feet and hands,” some so severe that some victims may lose limbs.
Frostbite in these extreme conditions can set in as quickly as three to 10 minutes, depending on age or exposure or other factors, such as wet gloves and socks, or even alcohol consumption, he said.
The brutally cold weather that’s held millions in its frozen grip for days was so intense Thursday morning that 11 states in the continental United States hit a temperature lower than the one recorded in Alaska’s northernmost city.
The Dakotas, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, New York and Pennsylvania all saw temperatures fall below -14 degrees. That was the temperature in Utqiagvik (also known as Barrow) a town of about 4,400 that sits north of the Arctic Circle.
But the end is in sight. The historic deep freeze that’s killed 16 people will let up by the end of the week.
At the cold’s peak Thursday morning, about 7 a.m. ET, more than 216 million people saw temperatures below freezing, including 84 million who dealt with subzero temperatures.
By the afternoon, about 30 million people were still under wind chill warnings and advisories — down from a peak of 140 million in the morning.
But the misery will slowly melt away Friday, with a warming trend that could give many Americans thermal whiplash.
“Today is the last of the extreme cold air,” Hennen said Thursday. “Temperatures will rebound quickly over much of the area that saw the extreme cold, creating a yo-yo effect of extreme temperature difference.”
Chicago, for example, will see a temperature rise of almost 75 degrees — from extreme cold of 20-25 below zero to temps in the low 50s on Monday.
And Atlanta, which has shivered in the 20s this week, will enjoy temperatures in the 60s when it hosts the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Pastor and His Family in Hiding After Muslim Man Allegedly Rapes, Tries to Kidnap Teen Daughter
A Pakistani preacher and his family are in hiding after a horrific scenario in which a Muslim man reportedly raped and harassed the pastor’s teenage daughter.
Pastor Aslam Masih’s 14-year-old was also reportedly near-kidnapped, with the assailant attempting to get her to convert to Islam, Christian Daily International-Morning Star News reported.
The incident unfolded Oct. 31, when the teen was on her way home from school and was blocked by the accused, and then forced her to go on his motorcycle with him.
Masih’s daughter eventually broke free and fled home.
“Upon inquiring why she had returned home, she told us that [the accused] had been harassing her for a long time to convert to Islam and marry her,” Masih told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News. “When I confronted [him], he threatened me, saying I should do whatever I could to protect my daughter. I did not know then that he had already assaulted her once.”
The teen was reportedly raped in September, which the family later discovered when she revealed the traumatic event to her parents.
“She couldn’t bear the agony and trauma any longer and broke down into tears,” Masih said. “She told us that [he] and his friends bundled her into a car when she was returning home from school and took her to a house where [he] raped her.”
Worried over the family’s safety, Masih took his daughter and loved ones to a relative’s home. The assailant has since reportedly damaged their house in their absence.
Masih filed a police report Nov. 2, though authorities have purportedly not taken action against the accused, who the preacher said has also been threatening the family in an attempt to intimidate them into dropping the case against him.
But the family is continuing to pursue justice as the case forges on.
As CBN News has reported, Christians face intense persecution in Pakistan. In September, two Christian brothers were accused of blasphemy for purportedly desecrating the Quran.
Tabish Shahid and Kalu Shahid, both 18, could face life sentences if found guilty after a Muslim accused the teenagers of tearing up pages of the Islamic holy book during a village fair. The two were arrested Aug. 27 and charged with blasphemy, Christian Daily International-Morning Star News reported.
The accuser claims Tabish and Kalu — who are reportedly illiterate and from a poor family — flippantly ripped up the pages. The Muslim man filed a complaint with police over the matter and ignited a sure-to-be dire battle for the teens.
But others tell a different and purportedly more complete story. Tabish and Kalu, being illiterate, reportedly had no idea what was on the pages they were ripping up. Find out more here.
As previously reported, these incidents are tragically becoming more routine in Pakistan. David Curry, CEO of Global Christian Relief, told CBN News Pakistan’s blasphemy laws — regulations restricting slights against religion — can lead to such mob violence and evils perpetuated against Christians.
“They have very strong blasphemy laws, which I describe as vigilante laws that give any extremist the ability to make an accusation against a Christian that they have offended — in some way — Muhammed,” Curry said. “And then rile up a mob to attack them, and [in] many cases kill them.”
He said some rely on these blasphemy laws to imprison and dole out the death sentence to Christians, often relying on fraudulent claims to make their case.
“In all these years I’ve been doing this, I don’t remember a case that seemed at all legitimate,” Curry said. “It’s just very common that there are false charges brought.”
Pakistan ranks on Open Doors’ World Watch List as the seventh most dangerous place for Christians.
Curry said it’s important for Christians around the globe to bring together their “collective voice to put pressure on Pakistan.” He noted the nation wants to be part of the business community, encouraging people to shine light on these injustices so people within Pakistan stand up and change these behaviors.

‘ Israeli, US Leaders Blast ICC Arrest Warrants Against Netanyahu, Gallant
Israel – Two of Israel’s most famous and respected leaders now face arrest if they go to almost any nation in the world. That’s after the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing alleged “war crimes.”
The prime minister swiftly defended Israel’s military actions in Gaza, declaring, “No war is more just than the war that Israel has been waging in Gaza after Hamas attacked us, unprovoked.”
Israeli President Isaac Herzog wrote that the ICC’s decision “has turned universal justice into a universal laughingstock.”
The ICC claims that Netanyahu and Gallant are guilty of “the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare, and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts.”
“We are accused of deliberately harming civilians, while we are doing everything to prevent harm to civilians – and this is against an enemy who is hiding behind civilians and using them as human shields. We are accused of starving a population while we are bringing in hundreds of thousands of tons of food to feed the population, and this is while Hamas is looting this food and it is starving the residents of Gaza,” Netanyahu proclaimed.
The ICC’s charges came amid evidence of another international organization’s bias against Israel. A new report from the group U.N. Watch stated that a former United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) commissioner-general held a secret meeting in 2017 with terrorist groups, including Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. At the meeting, the UNRWA chief reportedly told them “We are one” and “No one can separate us.”
As for the ICC arrest warrants, Netanyahu and Gallant could be arrested if they go to certain countries that have accepted the court’s authority. Nations such as the Netherlands and Ireland agreed immediately to make the arrests if given the chance.
Josep Borrell, the European Union foreign policy chief, said, “All members of the European Union are bound to implement this court decision.”
Nomi Bar-Yaacov, an international attorney with Chatham House noted, “And to those countries, Netanyahu won’t be able to travel. And that’s a very, very big thing.”
She added, “And they include the European countries and it includes the UK, it includes France, Germany. So that’s very, very serious.”
That doesn’t bother some anti-Netanyahu Israelis, such as Tel Aviv resident Annette Shimoni, who stated, “I don’t care if they arrest Bibi Netanyahu. As far as I’m concerned, he can sit in jail for the rest of his life.”
But other Israelis say far-away judges can’t understand what it’s like to be Jews in a region where they are always surrounded by terrorists plotting to exterminate them.
“This ICC’s purely antisemitic and it doesn’t see what’s going on around Israel,” said Tel Aviv resident Ron Ackerman. “Maybe they should come and live here for two or three months, and they will understand everything.”
Netanyahu is hoping for a tough backlash against the court.
“This decision will have severe consequences for the ICC and those who cooperate with its decision, Netanyahu warned.
President-elect Donald Trump’s presumptive National Security Advisor, Congressman Mike Waltz, promised, “You can expect a strong response to the anti-Semitic bias of the ICC and the U.N., come January.”
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) says the United States should go after the ICC because that court is targeting the wrong people. He suggested they should pursue the Islamic terrorists who are forcing the Israelis to fight them.
Graham said on the Senate floor, “This is not a Bibi problem. This is a problem where there are Islamic terrorists – Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran – that want to kill all the Jews; not just Bibi. Now, why do they want to do that? They’re religious Nazis.”
Graham and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul want Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to bring up a bill for a vote that the House has already passed.
The measure is called The Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act (Senate Bill 224). It would impose sanctions on ICC employees or associates who aid the effort to prosecute Israeli leaders.
Graham posted on X, “The court is a dangerous joke. It’s now time for the Senate to act and sanction this irresponsible body.”
