Evidence of biblical kingdom of Edom found
The Old Testament described Edom as a neighbouring enemy state of Judea, located southeast of the Dead Sea where explorers would now find parts of Jordan and Israel.
It was spoken of extremely harshly, with some biblical texts indicating that it was complicit in the destruction of Judea and the holy city of Jerusalem.
Edom has been described as a place “where kings reigned before any Israelite king reigned”, but is later said to have been defeated and plundered by King David of Israel.
Such tales have been scoffed at by plenty of historians down the years, but discoveries by a team of scientists and archaeologists in the area where it would have stood have raised new questions about its possible existence.
Researchers from the University of California and Tel Aviv University have been working at the supposed site in what is now known as the Arabah Valley.
There they excavated a copper production site dubbed Slaves’ Hill, dating back more than 6,000 years, which yielded layers of smelting waste that have helped reconstruct a time when the region enjoyed a “technological leap”.
Using a process called radiocarbon dating, which helps determine how old an organic object is, the researchers were able to put a date on the smelting waste – better known as slag.
Analysis of the minerals and metals within the slag was then used to work out how smelting techniques changed over the centuries, with lower concentrations of copper indicating that more had been extracted.
Efficiency improved dramatically in the second half of the 10th century BC and the techniques also became common across various sites in the region – indicating that other workers were picking them up.
Detailing the findings in the journal PLOS ONE, team leader Erez Ben-Yosef said the technological leap played a key role in the move from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age.
“Our study sheds new light on the emergence of the archaeologically elusive biblical kingdom of Edom, indicating that the process started much earlier than previously thought,” he said.
“That said, the study’s contribution goes beyond the Edomite case, as it provides significant insights on ancient technological evolution and the intricate interconnections between technology and society.
“The results demonstrate that the punctuated equilibrium evolutionary model is applicable to ancient technological developments, and that in turn, these developments are proxies for social processes.”
“Genesis 36:31-39 lists the eight Edomite kings up to that time, delineating a long line of political leaders during the years in which Israel lived in slavery in Egypt.”

Banned Chinese Church Continues Services, Endures Government Raids
China — Several locations and congregations of the Beijing Zion Church were raided on Oct. 20, according to Bitter Winter magazine and various human rights groups.
Authorities raided four church service locations in Beijing, recording details of everyone attending the services. They then arrested 12 people, including Elder Qin Guoliang, who was given a 14-day detention sentence.
Authorities banned Beijing Zion Church in April 2018 after the church refused to install CCTV cameras inside their building. The church also hadn’t registered with authorities. Since then, the church has continued to gather for worship and Bible teaching, meeting in various locations throughout Beijing.
Numerous Protestant churches in Beijing have protested and pushed back at the growing interference from President Xi Jinping’s government and communist authorities into the affairs of underground or unregistered churches.

Christian Jailed on Blasphemy Charge Released on Bail
A Christian individual who has been incarcerated since June on charges of blasphemy and terrorism in Pakistan was granted bail on October 23, following a high court’s identification of significant flaws in the police’s case against him, according to his attorney.
Chand Shamaun was taken into custody on June 23 and faced accusations of insulting Islam under Section 295-A of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, as well as Section 9 of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997. He was alleged to have incited religious discord in Okara, Punjab Province, by threatening to desecrate the Quran, as stated by his lawyer, Javed Sahotra.
On October 10, a two-judge panel of the Lahore High Court, comprising Muhammad Tariq Nadeem and Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi, approved Shamaun’s bail petition. He is a father of two young children, aged 5 and 2.
Section 295-A stipulates a maximum imprisonment of 10 years for “deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.” Meanwhile, Section 9 of the Anti-Terrorism Act pertains to “acts intended or likely to stir up sectarian hatred,” punishable by up to seven years in prison.
Sahotra indicated that the high court recognized the First Information Report (FIR) filed against Shamaun by police Sub-Inspector Haider Ali as indicative of the police’s ill intentions.
“The FIR against my client was lodged after a delay of 12 hours,” Sahotra informed Christian Daily International-Morning Star News. “Furthermore, the police complainant was not present at the scene of the alleged incident. There were no independent witnesses; the sole witness cited by the police was actually a police informant, frequently utilized as a complainant or witness in fabricated cases. Most critically, the police failed to recover any evidence that directly implicated Shamaun.”
In light of the inconsistencies in the police’s FIR and investigation report, the court ordered Shamaun’s release on bail, secured by a surety of 100,000 rupees (approximately $362 USD). He was subsequently released from custody on October 23.
“Chand is now reunited with his family, although they are not residing in their home,” Sahotra remarked.
