President Trump to appoint first black pastor of Jimmy Carter’s church to help former prisoners
Washington- Donald Trump will appoint Pastor Tony Lowden as the administration’s “reentry czar,” a position designed to implement and coordinate efforts to aid former prisoners reentering the workforce, a White House official told.
Lowden is the pastor at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, the longtime church of former President Jimmy Carter. Carter has long been deeply involved with the church, where he teaches Sunday school. The former president, 95, is currently recovering from a series of health issues, including a procedure in November to relieve pressure on his brain following recent falls. Carter attended Sunday’s service, but Lowden did not preach this week, according to a video of the sermon posted online.
In a time of bitter, partisan division, Lowden’s roles will serve as a rare example of unity and common ground.
Carter issued a statement praising Lowden’s selection and efforts to reduce recidivism.
“I cannot think of anyone better than Tony Lowden to lead a national effort to help those who have served time in prison get a true second chance once they are released,” Carter said in the statement. “With support and resources, recidivism can decrease and former inmates can become productive members of their communities. The congregation at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains will help in any way we can.”
Carter, who has been an outspoken critic of Trump, has also advised him during his presidency. Carter and Trump spoke by phone about US-China trade negotiations last year. Trump tweeted his well wishes to Carter when he had hip surgery last May.
But the two sparred over the summer when Carter suggested Trump’s presidency was illegitimate. Trump responded, calling Carter a “nice man, terrible president.”
As recently as last Thursday, Carter criticized Trump’s plan for Middle East peace, saying in a statement: “The new US plan undercuts prospects for a just peace between Israelis and Palestinians. If implemented, the plan will doom the only viable solution to this long-running conflict, the two-state solution.”
Trump is expected to announce Lowden’s appointment, which was first reported by McClatchy, on Friday during a trip to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the North Carolina Opportunity Now Summit. The Trump administration has made prison reform and workforce development priorities, and established the Federal Interagency Council on Crime Prevention and Improving Reentry, which Lowden will lead as executive director, in March 2018.
These policies are likely to be a key message in Trump’s campaign for reelection. The campaign ran a 30-second ad during the Super Bowl touting criminal justice reform and featuring Alice Johnson, a first-time nonviolent drug offender who was granted clemency by the President.
Lowden previously founded an after-school program for at-risk children and served as a commissioner on the State Charter School Commission, per his Maranatha Baptist biography. He also served as the director of Faith and Justice Initiative for the Governor’s Office of Transition Support and Reentry under then-Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal.
“Pastor Lowden has an extensive history fighting for reentry and is an excellent ‘outsider’ voice for this critical Trump Administration initiative,” a White House official said.

‘Please…Pray For Us!’: Wife of Man Fighting For Life After Being Shot in Head While Preaching Pens Powerful Message
The wife of a Christian man shot in the head Nov. 15 while preaching is imploring people to continue fervently praying for her husband and family.
Zulya Schmidt, wife of 26-year-old Hans Schmidt, wrote a touching Thanksgiving message on her Facebook page Thursday, expressing her profound gratitude despite the family’s tragic circumstances.
As CBN Digital reported, Schmidt, a 26-year-old dad of two and the outreach director at Victory Chapel First Phoenix in Arizona, was taken to the hospital Nov. 15 on suspicion of having been assaulted.
But a CT scan revealed he had been shot. Schmidt has reportedly remained in serious condition, as his family hopes and prays for a miracle.
Despite facing such grim days, Zulya Schmidt is looking to God for peace.
“So much to be grateful for,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “I am thankful for the amazing husband I got blessed with and all the fun adventures we’ve experienced and will experience.”
Schmidt went on to write a message directly to her husband, expressing her thankfulness also for the love he has shown her and their children.
“You blessed me with two sweet and beautiful children,” Schmidt wrote. “You are such a great and fun dad! I’ve always loved and admired your humility and willingness to help and serve.”
She also expressed appreciation for the messages of support and emotional assistance she has received since the shooting made headlines and shocked the nation.
“I’m grateful for all the love, support, and prayers we have received during this time,” Schmidt wrote. “Lastly, so grateful for a God we believe in and serve who upholds us during times like this.”
She continued, “Hans should have been gone that first night, but he’s still here fighting. Please continue to pray for us! We desperately need it.”
Victory Chapel First Phoenix is currently raising money for the family and has been updating the public about the tragic situation.
“Our outreach director, Hans Schmidt, was shot while street preaching on Wednesday night (Nov 15th) before service,” the church’s website explains. “He is in critical condition and in desperate need of a miracle.”
According to Blaze Media, the incident unfolded in Glendale, Arizona, with authorities investigating the shooting after initially receiving a report someone had been assaulted.
Officer Gina Winn, public information official with the Glendale Police Department, called the horrific event is a “horrible, horrible offense,” and said authorities believe someone in the community knows information about what unfolded.

സമീപത്തെ പോക്കാറ്റെല്ലോ റീജിയണല് എയര്പോര്ട്ടില് അപകടസമയത്ത് താപനില ഏകദേശം 5 ഡിഗ്രി ആയിരുന്നുവെന്നാണ് റിപ്പോര്ട്ട്. രാവിലെ മുഴുവന് ഇവിടെ മൂടല്മഞ്ഞ് റിപ്പോര്ട്ട് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. അപകടത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് അന്വേഷണം തുടരുകയാണെന്ന് ഐഎസ്പി പറഞ്ഞു.
