Tennessee House passes resolution declaring the Bible as official state book

A Tennessee resolution that would designate the Bible as the official state book cleared the House on Monday night as the sponsor and another member who opposed the measure — both preachers — squared off quoting from the book to make their arguments for and against.
House Joint Resolution 150 passed 55-28. It now goes to the Senate, where Lt. Gov. Randy McNally, R-Oak Ridge, the Senate speaker, has voiced opposition to the measure — which House sponsor Jerry Sexton, R-Bean Station, has introduced in two previous legislatures.
Asked what Republican Gov. Bill Lee’s position on the measure is, the governor’s communications director, Laine Arnold, said, “We’ll keep an eye on it as it moves on the Senate side.”
It’s the third time that Sexton, a part-time minister, has brought the measure, introducing it the first two times as a bill. In 2016, then-Gov. Bill Haslam, a Republican, vetoed the measure, citing a 2015 state attorney general’s opinion stating the bill violated the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution as well as Article I, Section 3 of the Tennessee Constitution. Haslam said his personal view was the bill “trivializes the Bible,” which he considered a sacred text.
Sexton’s effort to override Haslam’s veto fizzled. He introduced another bill in the following General Assembly but didn’t push it. This year, Sexton introduced it as House Joint Resolution 150.
The resolution cites the Bible’s “great historical and cultural significance in the state of Tennessee as a record of the history of Tennessee families that predates some modern vital statistical records.”
Sexton noted in a floor speech that the Bible outsells “every other book” and notes Tennessee has been a center of Bible publishing.
“It’s a book that’s been very important to me my whole life,” said Sexton, also a businessman. “I’m glad that I’ve had the opportunity to stand in the pulpit and open its pages and preach what I call the Gospel. And I’m sure many of you do.”
Rep. Johnny Shaw, D-Bolivar, a minister and businessman, said he had been “trying to find some scripture that would allow us to take God’s word, to bring it down to the level of a state. And I just can’t find it.”
Quoting Jesus, Shaw said, “If you continue in my word, then ye are my disciple in deed.” He said he sees all the authority “gives to us is to be able to represent in character, in personality, in speech and in love, he gives us the authority to represent him that way. But he does not give us the authority to say that my word should be here or it should be there. It’s only in us, wherever we are.”
Sexton countered, “I’ll answer that question if you’ll tell me where separation of [church and] state is in any of our founding documents in the United States government and in any of our founding fathers that have used that to found this nation and our constitution. I’ll be glad to answer that when you show me where that is in our founding documents.”
Shaw also raised concerns that Sexton’s efforts were effectively “shoving” scripture down peoples’ “throats.” Replied Sexton: “I never have, and I never would, shove it.”
The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution begins, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” Thomas Jefferson, one of the founders of the nation, said in an 1802 letter to the Danbury Baptist Association that the clause was intended to build a “wall of separation between the church and state.”
After Shaw later said what Sexton was asking would “embarrass us,” Sexton replied, “I don’t want you to be embarrassed,” adding he wanted to “uphold the standards of God or his son, my beloved Savior.”
The measure now goes to the Senate. McNally said of Sexton’s resolution that “I do think it trivializes the Bible and places it along with other symbols that the state has like the salamander and the limestone rock and mockingbird, things like that.”
McNally said that because the measure is “substantive” and not merely procedural, it will go through the committee process. Asked if he expects it will reach the Senate floor for a final vote, he said, “I think it’s really up to the committees that it goes through.”

Proposed Senate Resolution Recognizes Persecution of Christians

United States — The United States Senate could soon pass S.Res.52, a resolution that reaffirms religious freedom as a fundamental human right globally. Introduced in early February by Senator James Lankford (R-OK), the legislation expresses concern over the escalating global threats to religious liberty. Unfortunately, Christians have faced the brunt of this persecution, with an average of 13 believers being killed every day because of their faith.
S.Res.52 highlights several countries where religious minorities, including Christians, face significant challenges to practicing their faith.
In Afghanistan, the Taliban has enforced its “harsh interpretation of Sharia law,” and those who do not adhere face imprisonment or death if discovered. In China, the government uses “targeted surveillance to monitor, harass, and detain” Christians and other religious minorities for exercising their beliefs. In the Sahel region of Africa, violent extremist groups have threatened “violence against Christians who do not convert to Islam.”
If passed, S.Res.52 would also signal for international religious freedom to become a foreign policy priority for the United States.
Currently, the resolution is before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, where it must be presented by Chairman Senator Jim Risch (R-ID) and Ranking Member Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) before advancing to the full Senate. International Christian Concern’s (ICC) Advocacy team encourages Christians in the U.S. to contact both senators, urging them to swiftly bring this crucial resolution before the committee.

‘God Was Exalted’: 4,500 Students Seek Jesus at Purdue University, Thousands Saved

Thousands of college students are giving Jesus their “Yes” once again after making decisions to accept Christ as their Savior, a college campus ministry reports.
The third UniteUS event of 2025 took place at Purdue University Wednesday night and more than 4,500 students gathered to hear the gospel and be transformed.
The founder and visionary behind UniteUS, Tonya Prewett, summed up what took place saying, “God was exalted at Purdue University!!”
By the end of the night, nearly half of those who attended confessed Jesus as the Savior and some took part in water baptisms afterward.
“From the moment we stepped on campus we knew God was going to move in a special way tonight,” the group wrote on Instagram.
“4,500 students gathered in Elliott Hall of Music and we were blown away seeing how the students leaned in during worship. We still can’t get over seeing nearly half the students in attendance flood the altar to give Jesus their ‘yes,'” the post continued.
UniteUS is a ministry that’s been making waves on college campuses across the country for several years now.
At the start of the year, 8,000 students gathered at the University of Kentucky’s Rupp Arena to worship Jesus and hear a powerful message on the Gospel.
Then, an Ohio State revival event saw 6,500 students gather in The Schott where almost 2,000 attendees responded to the altar call.
During the outreaches, Prewett is often joined by Pastor Jonathan Pokluda and founder of the IF:Gathering, Jennie Allen.
Pokluda previously told CBN News many students are coming to these gatherings ready to shed their past mistakes.
“They’re coming in with guilt and shame. STDs, unwanted pregnancies, abortions,” Pokluda said. “And they come here and we’re showing them the one—the only one—who can really deal with their sin, is Jesus Christ.”
UniteUS was birthed out of a desire to “lift the name of Jesus,” and it gained rapid momentum after its initial outreach at Auburn University’s Neville Arena in September 2023 where 5,000 students showed up to worship Jesus and 200 were spontaneously baptized in a nearby lake.
The evangelistic college campus movement is marked by salvations, water baptisms, and worship, and it’s beginning to garner national attention, but Prewett says it is all about sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
She told CBN News last year that it is truly “a move of God.”
“I’m not capable of doing this, we’re not capable of doing this, it’s the hand of God. It’s way bigger than us,” Prewett explained.
After their first outreach this year, Allen commented, “It’s hard to believe. This keeps happening. It is insane.”
And the same rang true last night after another massive response.
Students joined Allen as she baptized dozens in tubs.
“Thousands came forward to receive Christ,” she said in a social media post Thursday morning. “They want God everywhere we go.”
Purdue sophomore, Anna Suppes, is a part of the planning team and told Fox59 that the movement on campus began with prayer.
“It started with five people praying and it grew to 200,” she shared.
Tre Henson told the outlet he hopes this movement sparks a lasting change on Purdue’s campus.
“Purdue is a very academic campus and it is very easy for people to feel lonely or anxious. So we are trying to plug people into the community and let them know that they are seen and loved. And also spread the gospel and the truth,” he explained.
The next UniteUS outreach will be held at West Virginia University on March 11. Since September of 2023, the ministry’s events have reached more than 100,000 college students across multiple campuses.
