The church was destroyed in a lava flow from the eruption of the Cumbre Viza volcano in La Palma, in the Canary Islands.
A church in La Palma, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, has crumbled after being hit by lava flows from a volcano that has been erupting for more than a week, destroying homes, roads and schools, and displacing thousands of people.
Videos show a billowing white cloud moving with a rumble toward the church in the village of Todoque on Sunday afternoon before the gray-and-white bell tower collapses, leaving only a thick wall of ash visible in its wake.
A similar fate befell nearby houses as lava engulfed them, and fires sent plumes of smoke into the air. They were among the latest to be destroyed by a massive eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, which began Sept. 19 and has upended life on part of the northeast Atlantic island and generated intense social media interest.
Lava from the eruption has covered some 570 acres of land and generated around 3,700 acres worth of ash fall, as captured by Copernicus, the European Union’s satellite monitoring service. It has destroyed more than 500 buildings and nearly 12 miles of roads, Copernicus Emergency Management Services said, and displaced at least 6,000 people.

Eight days after it began, the eruption appears to be weakening — but it’s not over yet.
The plume of ash rising from the volcano’s main vent stopped briefly in the early hours of Monday.
“The volcano of La Palma has entered in a phase of lower activity,” the Institute of Geosciences, based in Madrid, wrote in a tweet. “Let’s see how it evolves in the coming hours.”
Involcan, the Canary Islands’ volcanology institute, published graphs Monday morning showing a steep drop in seismic activity in the area. Two hours later, however, the institute posted images of a column of ash rising from the volcano into an otherwise clear blue sky.
Experts were watching the swarm of quakes that came with the volcanic eruption just below the island’s center as the temblors moved south, the AP reported.
Island authorities warned residents in four neighborhoods to remain indoors as lava rushed toward the sea. The lava flow has gathered speed since Sunday as it made its way down a steep slope toward cliffs on the sea. Drone footage taken by Reuters showed a river of red lava flowing down from the crater, close to homes. By early Monday, the lava was around 800 meters (about a half mile) from the water.
María José Blanco, director of the National Geographic Institute in the Canary Islands, said at a news conference Monday afternoon that there are two ongoing lava flows. The speed of the south one is very low, she said, while the faster-moving north one has forked itself into two around the mountain.
The flow heading south of the mountain of Todoque had slowed as of Monday afternoon, Miguel Ángel Morcuende, technical director of Involcan, told reporters.
Involcan warned that a thermal shock occurs when the lava, which can be hotter than 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit, meets seawater — generating plumes of water vapor filled with hydrochloric acid and tiny particles of volcanic glass. The steam columns are dangerous to humans; inhaling the vapor can irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory tract and cause breathing difficulties. The hazard is likely to remain local, according to Involcan.
Officials have also asked residents of the island to avoid outdoor activities as the volcano erupts, and said those removing volcanic ash should wear face masks and protective glasses.
La Palma’s airport has reopened after an accumulation of ash forced it to close early Saturday, though a massive cloud of ash prevented planes from flying in and out Sunday.
La Palma, part of the Spanish archipelago off northwest Africa, is roughly 22 miles long and 12 miles wide at its broadest point. Some 85,000 people live on the island.
The eruption on Sept. 19 prompted residents to flee their homes and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to cancel his trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. The volcano, which last erupted in 1971, had shown signs of activity in the days leading up to the eruption, putting locals on high alert. More than 22,000 tremors were detected in one week around the active volcanic region, according to authorities.
No fatalities or serious injuries have been reported in the week-long event. But lava has destroyed irrigation infrastructure for La Palma’s banana plantations, which provide nearly one-third of the island’s jobs, the AP reported.
Government spokesperson Julio Pérez said Monday that authorities are assessing the lava flow to prepare for reconstruction efforts.

An Israeli entrepreneur on a mission to highlight biblical artifacts has brought his “treasures from the Holy Land” to America.
Oded Golan’s “Discovering the World of Jesus: Ancient Treasures From the Holy Land” experience opened Dec. 3 at Atlanta’s Pullman Yards, with hundreds of ancient artifacts surrounding the New Testament on display.
“We are bringing [a] once-in-a-lifetime experience to people to look at items that they will probably not have other opportunities to see,” Golan recently told CBN News. “The 350 items that are presented here, most of them are from the time of Christ. They were all found in the Holy Land in Israel, and they are telling the stories that are mentioned in the New Testament, but in first hand.”
He added, “You’re almost touching the history.”
Golan said some of the items are related to Jesus’ family or people living during his lifetime. These elements allow people to explore life during biblical times, seeing the behaviors and practices that unfolded during the New Testament era.
Already, audiences are loving the experience, Golan said, noting that giving a lens into the past illuminates knowledge and understanding.
“It doesn’t change faith, it doesn’t change belief, but it changed, somehow, how do you feel and how do you see the stories that are mentioned in the Bible — in the New Testament,” he said.
Golan’s story is a fascinating one, as he started collecting antiquities when he was just a child.
What started as a passion project grew into something much more — a collection he calls the “biggest and largest … in the world of biblical archaeology items.”
“When I was young, even, you know, until the age of 16, 17, I had in mind that I should be an archaeologist one day,” he said. “But … in life it was changed … but I kept archaeology as a hobby.”
And that hobby grew as he traveled all over the Holy Land and collected artifacts — relics he brings to audiences in “Discovering the World of Jesus: Ancient Treasures From the Holy Land.”
“In this exhibition, we present only items that came from a very short period of time,” Golan said. “We are talking about the early first century AD, the time of Jesus. A few items are from the 3rd, 4th, 5th century because this was the time when the first churches emerged — the cradle of Christianity.”
He believes audiences will be captivated regardless of their age or religious beliefs.
“It doesn’t matter what age you are, and what [religion] you are, and how strong [a] believer you are,” Golan said. “It’s fantastic.”
The entrepreneur also made international headlines in 2012 when he was on trial after being accused by the Israel Antiquities Authority of forging an inscription on the James ossuary, a stone relic believed to hold the bones of Jesus’ brother, James.
He was acquitted after a seven-year legal battle. The ossuary, which has been a source of contention, has an Aramaic line that reads, “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus.” Proponents argue that the inscription pointed to evidence of Christ’s brother, James.
Ultimately, Golan was absolved of the most serious charges surrounding manufacturing elements of this inscription, among other serious charges. Some have since defended the authenticity of the artifact’s inscription, which would be the earliest reference to Jesus. Read more about the history of the matter.
Golan referred to this case while explaining he was in the “later stage” of his life – over the age of 50 — when he read the New Testament for the first time and started to understand it. Wanting to better comprehend the ossuary in his collection, he turned to the text for understanding.
Speaking about the James ossuary, he heralded the importance of the find, which is included in “Discovering the World of Jesus: Ancient Treasures From the Holy Land.” He’s hoping the collection inspires visitors to think more deeply about the past.
“You’re touching the history — almost physically,” Golan reiterated. “And that makes … a big difference compared to any other kind of exhibition. And, as I mentioned, it’s not only the artifact exhibition. It has much more than that.”
After the Atlanta run, Golan hopes to bring “Discovering the World of Jesus: Ancient Treasures From the Holy Land” to other cities across America.
