Houthi attack on Abu Dhabi again; UAE fires missile
Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi group targeted the United Arab Emirates on Monday for the second time in a week, stoking tensions in the oil-exporting region even as the Gulf nation and U.S. forces said they had intercepted the threat.
Oil gained, remaining near the highest levels since 2014 as geopolitical risk and the prospect of improving demand pushed crude to five straight weekly gains. Brent crude traded near $90 a barrel on Monday after reports of the attack.
Shrapnel fell over scattered areas of Abu Dhabi after military defenses repelled two ballistic missiles, but there was no damage or loss of life, the UAE Defense Ministry said in a statement. The UAE said it had destroyed the launchers in Yemen’s northern Al Jawf region, more than 1,270 kilometers (790 miles) from Abu Dhabi, immediately after the missiles were fired and was “taking all necessary procedures to protect the country.”
U.S. military forces “successfully reacted to multiple inbound threats” during an attack near Abu Dhabi in the early hours of Monday, the U.S. Air Force said.
The UAE-based Al Dhafra Air Base, home to the U.S. Air Force’s 380th Air Expeditionary Wing and other U.S. forces, “remain in a heightened state of alert following the attack,” Brig. Gen. Andrew Clark said in an emailed statement.
The strike comes barely a week after Abu Dhabi suffered its first deadly attack in Yemen’s seven-year conflict, with the Houthis warning international investors to leave and vowing to expand their range of targets in a country that’s built its economy and attracted millions of expatriates on the back of its reputation as a safe harbor in a volatile region.
The U.S. embassy in Abu Dhabi issued a rare alert urging its “citizens in the United Arab Emirates to maintain a high level of security awareness” and offering detailed advice on how to cope with missile strikes.
The escalation comes at a critical time for regional diplomacy; Iran’s longtime support of the Houthis means the incidents could upset fragile diplomatic efforts to ease frictions with Gulf Arab neighbors as well as broader negotiations to restore Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.
Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said in a televised speech on its Al-Masirah TV Monday that the group targeted the Al Dhafra military air base in Abu Dhabi and attacked several targets in the UAE’s commercial capital of Dubai using drones. There was no confirmation of any attack on Dubai.
Last week’s missile and drone attack on Abu Dhabi killed three people and wounded six, igniting a fire at the airport and setting fuel trucks ablaze.
Drones have made it possible to conduct small, targeted assaults that slip through multibillion-dollar defense systems designed to deter more advanced weapons. The physical damage — both on land and at sea — is usually minimal but the reputational impact could still be huge for the UAE, OPEC’s third biggest oil producer.
More than 80% of the UAE’s population is comprised of foreigners, with the emirate of Dubai establishing itself as a key global trade hub and home to one of the world’s busiest international airports.
Over the weekend, the UAE grounded all private drones and light sports aircraft for a month following what it termed as “misuse” of permits and “trespassing” into prohibited areas.
“Sensitivity to attacks is high in the UAE given their absence historically and the high contribution of tourism to the economy,” said Hasnain Malik, the Dubai-based head of research at Tellimer, putting the tourism industry’s direct contribution to the UAE economy at about 5%. This “usually implies a figure at least double this in terms of indirect contribution, and likely multiples of this in the less oil-rich emirates such as Dubai.”

സിത്താരോ ദ്വീപില്‍ നിന്ന് 838 പേരെയാണ് ഒഴിപ്പിച്ചതെന്നാണ് വിവരം. പർവത ചരിവുകളിലൂടെ ലാവ ഒഴുകുന്ന വീഡിയോകളും പുറത്തുവന്നു. അഗ്നിപർവതം പൊട്ടിത്തെറിക്കുന്നതിന് മുൻപ് നിരവധി ഭൂകമ്ബങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടായതായി സൂചനകളുണ്ട്.
27 കോടി ജനങ്ങളുള്ള ദ്വീപസമൂഹമായ ഇന്തോനേഷ്യയിൽ 120 സജീവ അഗ്നിപർവ്വതങ്ങളുണ്ട്. 725 മീറ്റർ (2,378 അടി) യുള്ള റുവാങ് അഗ്നിപർവ്വതത്തിൽ നിന്ന് കുറഞ്ഞത് 6 കിലോമീറ്റർ (3.7 മൈൽ) അകലെ താമസിക്കാൻ അധികൃതർ വിനോദസഞ്ചാരികളോടും ജനങ്ങളോടും അഭ്യർത്ഥിച്ചു.

As Record Bible Disengagement Rages, Researchers Discover ‘Good Reason For Hope’ If Key Trend Continues
A new survey yielded results that could give Christians a “good reason for hope” when it comes to the Gospel’s impact on young people.
This year, 54% of Gen Z adults (ages 18-27) agreed the Bible’s message has transformed their lives, up from 50% last year.
These results are captured in the first chapter of the 14th annual “State of the Bible Report 2024.”
The increase in support for Scripture’s message left Dr. John Farquhar Plake, chief program officer and editor-in-chief of the State of the Bible, with some hope for the future, despite noting the decrease in Scripture engagement in recent years.
“Our youngest adults show signs of interest in the Bible, curiosity about it, and transformative interaction with it,” Plake said, breaking down the increase in those who say the “message of the Bible has transformed their lives.” “If this trend continues, we have good reason for hope.”
On the negative front, though, the research found “there are more Bible Disengaged Americans than ever.” The State of the Bible found people fall into a number of categories when it comes to Bible engagement: Scripture Engaged, Bible Disengaged, or in the Movable Middle.
Tragically, the survey found 10 million people slid from the middle to the least engaged bucket, amounting to 4% of the total population, according to an overview of results.
“Now 57% of Americans are Bible Disengaged — the highest number in the 14-year history of this survey,” the statement read.
One of the other fascinating finds centers on race. White Americans’ Scripture engagement dropped over the last year to 16%, while black Americans saw their Scripture engagement increase to 28%.
The American Bible Society said black Americans also have higher church attendance and other “measures of spiritual vitality.”
Additional chapters will be released throughout the year, providing a lens into where Americans stand on Bible engagement and faith practices.
