നെയ്റോബി: ആഫ്രിക്കന്‍ രാജ്യമായ കെനിയയിൽ കത്തോലിക്ക വൈദികന്‍ വെടിയേറ്റ് കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു. കെനിയയിലെ പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ മേഖലയായ എൽഗെയോ മറാക്വെറ്റ്ം കൗണ്ടിയിലെ കെറിയോ താഴ്‌വരയിലെ ടോട്ട് പ്രദേശത്തുവെച്ചാണ് ഫാ. അലോയ്‌സ് ചെറൂയോട്ട് എന്ന വൈദികന്‍ ദാരുണമായി വെടിയേറ്റ് മരിച്ചത്. മെയ് 22നായിരിന്നു സംഭവം. വൈദികന്‍ പള്ളിയിലേക്ക് പോകുമ്പോഴാണ് സംഭവം നടന്നതെന്ന് എൽഗെയോ മറാക്വെറ്റ് കൗണ്ടി പോലീസ് കമാൻഡർ പീറ്റർ മുലിംഗെ പറഞ്ഞു.

ഫാ. അലോയ്‌സിന്റെ കഴുത്തിലാണ് വെടിയേറ്റത്. കൊലപാതകവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് ആറ് പേരെ അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തതായി കെനിയൻ പോലീസ് പറഞ്ഞു. കവർച്ച ശ്രമമാണെന്ന് സംശയിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും, ഫാ. ബെറ്റിന്റെ കൊലപാതകത്തിന് പ്രദേശത്തെ കന്നുകാലി മോഷണങ്ങളുമായോ മറ്റ് തരത്തിലുള്ള കൊള്ളയുമായോ യാതൊരു ബന്ധവുമില്ലെന്ന് പോലീസ് വ്യക്തമാക്കി. പ്രദേശത്തെ സുരക്ഷാ പ്രവർത്തനത്തിൽ പോലീസിന് വിവരങ്ങള്‍ കൈമാറുന്ന വ്യക്തിയായി വൈദികനെ കൊലയാളികൾ തെറ്റിദ്ധരിച്ചിരിക്കാമെന്ന് പ്രാദേശിക വൃത്തങ്ങൾ പറയുന്നു.

ഒരാഴ്ചയ്ക്കുള്ളിൽ കെനിയയിൽ കൊല്ലപ്പെടുന്ന രണ്ടാമത്തെ കത്തോലിക്ക വൈദികനാണ് ഫാ. ടോട്ട്. മെയ് 15 ന്, ഇഗ്വാമിറ്റിയിലെ സെന്റ് ലൂയിസ് ഇടവകയിലെ ഇടവക വികാരി ഫാ. ജോൺ എൻഡെഗ്വ മൈനയെ ഇടവകയിൽ നിന്ന് നിരവധി കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയുള്ള നകുരു-നെയ്റോബി ഹൈവേയുടെ വശത്ത് ഗുരുതരമായി പരിക്കേറ്റ നിലയിൽ കണ്ടെത്തിയിരിന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ആശുപത്രിയിൽ എത്തിച്ചെങ്കിലും മരണം സംഭവിച്ചു.

Armed assailants shot and killed Catholic priest Fr. Alloys Cheruiyot Bett on the evening of Thursday, May 22, while he was walking back to his parish after attending a Small Christian Community meeting in Kabartile Village, Elgeyo Marakwet County. According to CISA News, the attack occurred as he descended a hill in the volatile Kerio Valley region; his body has been transferred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.

Fr. Kamau Francis, Communications Director for the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret and a classmate of the late priest, confirmed the incident and stated that no official motive has yet been established. “It’s true he was shot while coming back to his parish from a Small Christian Community prayer gathering.

Fr. Bett was serving as the parish priest of St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, a mission located in one of the most violence-prone areas of Elgeyo Marakwet. The region has frequently witnessed armed violence and criminal activity, although police have ruled out cattle rustling or traditional banditry as motives behind the priest’s murder.

According to a statement by the National Police Service (NPS) issued on May 22, six suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing. Police Spokesperson and Director of Corporate Communication, Mr. Muchiri Nyaga, confirmed that General Service Unit officers responded quickly and launched a manhunt that led to the arrests. He described the killing as a “premeditated and targeted attack”.

“The Service extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Father Alloys Cheruiyot Bett, as well as the parishioners of St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish,” the statement read. Authorities appealed to residents to remain calm, cooperate with ongoing investigations, and report any relevant information.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich, who visited the scene shortly after the incident, condemned the violence and praised Fr. Bett’s service to the community. “ The murder took place just a few kilometres from where he was today doing some work with the community. Father Allois was a great priest. At 2 p.m., I was called and told that Father is no more. His body is now being transported to Eldoret,” said Governor Rotich. “On behalf of the great people of Elgeyo Marakwet, I want to say pole [sorry] to the Catholic Bishop of Eldoret, the priests, and the community of Kerio Valley,” he added.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves across the Catholic Church in Kenya, especially coming just one week after the suspicious death of Fr. John Maina of the Diocese of Nyahururu. Fr. Maina was found seriously injured by the roadside in Gilgil and later succumbed to his wounds on May 15. He was buried the same day Fr. Bett was killed.

Church leaders and local officials have renewed urgent calls for justice and better protection for clergy working in high-risk areas. Investigations into both deaths are ongoing.

Iran — Hakop Gochumyan, an Armenian Christian arrested in Iran in 2023 for his Christian faith, recently sent a letter to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) detailing abuses he’s endured while imprisoned.

In the letter, published on May 9, Gochumyan explained that Iranian authorities have “subjected [him] to psychological violence” and threatened to take his life and the lives of his family.

Mervyn Thomas, president and founder of CSW, called for “Gochumiyan’s immediate and unconditional release” and rallied the “international community … to hold Iranian authorities to account” for their human rights abuses.

Gochumyan was detained just outside of Tehran, in Pardis, in August 2023 and sentenced to 10 years in prison in February 2024. His charges include “engaging in deviant proselytizing activity that contradicts the sacred law of Islam” by allegedly associating with “a network of evangelical Christianity.”

Authorities arrested Gochumyan and his wife on the same day. His wife was released on bail in October 2023 and returned to Armenia.

The couple, along with their two children, were in Iran to visit family and, while attending a dinner at a friend’s house, police arrived and arrested them. Allegedly, Gochumyan possessed copies of Farsi-language New Testaments, which are banned in Iran, and had attended several churches during his visit.

Spreading the gospel of Christ to non-Christians is illegal in Iran. Additionally, possessing Bibles written in Farsi, the nation’s official language, isn’t allowed as it could draw a non-Christian to Jesus. Christian conversion is something the Iranian regime strongly discourages and attempts to dissuade, often through psychological manipulation, overt intimidation, physical abuse, and imprisonment.

However, the light of Christ continues to shine in the region and can’t be extinguished. Despite the intense harassment and persecution that Christians experience in Iran, Iranian Christians remain steadfast in their faith.

Many Christian converts join secret underground house churches and risk everything for the chance to worship Jesus. A 2024 International Christian Concern report stated that “the Christian church in Iran is one of the fastest-growing Christian populations in the world, according to experts familiar with the issue.”

In the face of relentless, abhorrent treatment by Iranian authorities, many of the nation’s Christians persevere in their faith, and therein lies their victory. And it’s the kind that will carry them into eternity.
