China has conducted the world’s first satellite-based, ultra-remote surgeries, a breakthrough in medical technology that could transform trauma care, especially in high-intensity combat zones. The operations were performed using the Apstar-6D broadband communications satellite, positioned 36,000km above Earth, according to South China Morning Post.

Doctors from the People’s Liberation Army General Hospital successfully conducted five surgeries remotely from Lhasa in Tibet, Dali in Yunnan, and Sanya in Hainan. The patients, located in Beijing, underwent procedures on their liver, gallbladder, or pancreas with the aid of a domestically developed robotic surgical system. All patients reportedly recovered and were discharged the following day, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

“This series of remote surgeries spanned China’s mountains and straits, demonstrating the feasibility, safety and effectiveness of performing complex long-distance operations using home-grown satellite technologies and robotic systems,” CCTV said.
The achievement was a significant breakthrough in integrating medical and information technology, opening up new possibilities for trauma care systems in the future, it added.

Launched in 2020, Apstar-6D is a high-throughput communications satellite with a total capacity of 50 gigabits per second and an expected lifespan of 15 years. It provides extensive coverage across the Asia-Pacific region, focusing particularly on air and sea traffic routes.
While Apstar-6D can monitor around one-third of the Earth’s surface from its geostationary orbit, its vast coverage requires relaying data over significant distances, posing challenges for real-time applications such as remote surgeries.

To tackle these challenges, Dr Liu Rong – who performed the first surgery in the series from Lhasa, removing a liver tumour from a patient in Beijing – assembled an interdisciplinary team of experts from the hospital, satellite operator and manufacturer, according to China Space News.

The team optimised communication links by implementing advanced data classification, Quality of Service (QoS) control and traffic management techniques. These innovations reduced latency to levels approaching the physical limits of satellite communication, the newspaper reported.

The groundbreaking operations have brought remote surgeries closer to becoming “a fully normalised and commercialised clinical practice”, the report said, paving the way for seamless, 24/7 global coverage and enabling surgical interventions at any location worldwide.

Satellite-based communication offers major advantages over ground-based infrastructure for remote surgeries, as it is unaffected by geographic and temporal constraints while providing broader coverage, higher availability and faster deployment.

Weighing 5,500kg (12,125lbs), Apstar-6D is the first in a planned constellation of three to four geostationary satellites, designed to provide broadband connectivity to aircraft, ships and remote locations across the Asia-Pacific region.

In November, China delivered the Apstar-6E – the nation’s first all-electric propulsion communications satellite – to its customer in Indonesia, further enhancing its presence in satellite communications technology.

Malaysia— Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is facing new allegations that she is attempting to convert Muslims and establish Malaysia as a Christian nation.

Seven reports were recently filed at the Dang Wangi police headquarters following calls by several nongovernmental organizations for the Home Ministry to ban her book, “Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey,” citing national security concerns. Yeoh previously faced accusations of Christian evangelism in July 2024.

Dang Wangi Police Chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman confirmed the receipt of the police reports and stated that investigations are underway.

Yeoh responded to the accusations, stating her intention to file a police report against “malicious” videos and messages circulating online. These materials, she claimed, falsely insinuate her intention to convert Muslims and promote Christianity in Malaysia.

She believes these fabricated claims could negatively affect her ongoing appeal against a High Court decision. Earlier this week, the High Court dismissed her defamation suit against former Inspector General of Police Musa Hassan.

The suit arose from a 2020 statement Musa made at a Universiti Teknologi Mara forum, where he allegedly accused Yeoh of using her book to undermine Islam and promote Christianity to make Malaysia a Christian nation.

The High Court dismissed the suit, finding insufficient evidence to prove that Musa’s remarks specifically targeted Yeoh and that many of his comments were more broadly directed.

Yeoh has since appealed this decision to the appellate court. About 9% of Malaysians are Christian, and more than 60% are Muslims. Yeoh’s case is significant given the pressure the Christian minority faces in many parts of Malaysian society, from everyday life to the halls of political power in the nation. While Christianity is not illegal in Malaysia, it is illegal for Malay people to convert to Christianity. The government also opposes evangelism among Malays.

Washington — International Christian Concern (ICC) has released its renamed and revamped annual report for the new year.

ICC’s 2025 Global Persecution Index offers an in-depth analysis of drivers of persecution in 20 countries, complete with stories of Christians enduring persecution for their faith in Christ.

“ICC examined every corner of the world to identify the worst of the worst areas of persecution,” ICC President Jeff King said. “Approximately 300 million Christians worldwide face persecution of all types, including imprisonment, torture, and assassination.”

Formerly known as the Persecutors of the Year, the new and improved report examines trends that have created the realities that Christians face worldwide and offers ways readers can support persecuted Christians through prayer, advocacy, and action. The comprehensive report is also geared toward decision-makers on Capitol Hill, journalists, and stakeholders.

Recent developments highlighted in the 2025 Global Persecution Index include the following:

Persecution in Nicaragua has worsened dramatically, with increased government hostility toward Christians.
In India, Hindu nationalism has intensified, stripping away the rights of Christians and other religious minorities through anti-conversion laws and mob violence.
Christians in the DRC, Nigeria, and regions throughout the Sahel face horrific attacks and displacement.
