2023-ൽ ക്രൈസ്തവ ദേവാലയ വക സ്വത്തുക്കൾക്ക് നേരെ 32 ആക്രമണങ്ങളും ക്രൈസ്തവ വിശ്വാസികള്‍ക്ക് നേരെ ഏഴ് അക്രമാസക്തമായ ആക്രമണങ്ങളും 11 വാക്കാലുള്ള ഉപദ്രവവും സെമിത്തേരി അവഹേളിച്ചതും വൈദികര്‍ക്കും തീർത്ഥാടകർക്കും നേരെ യഹൂദര്‍ തുപ്പിയ മുപ്പതോളം ആക്രമണങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടായതായി റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടില്‍ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടുന്നു. മിഷ്ണറി പ്രവർത്തനം ഇസ്രായേലിൽ നിയമവിരുദ്ധമല്ലായെങ്കിലും ആക്രമണങ്ങളില്‍ വര്‍ദ്ധനവ് ഉണ്ടാകുന്നതാണ് ആശങ്ക വര്‍ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.

ക്രൈസ്തവ വിശ്വാസത്തെ ലക്ഷ്യംവെച്ചുള്ള ആക്രമണങ്ങളെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ നേതൃത്വമോ ഇസ്രായേലി അധികാരികളോ വ്യക്തമായി പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നില്ല. എന്നിരുന്നാലും തീവ്ര വലതുപക്ഷത്തേക്കു വളർന്നുവരുന്ന ദേശീയതയിലേക്കുള്ള മാറ്റം, യഹൂദ ജനതയ്‌ക്കുള്ള ഒരു രാഷ്ട്രമെന്ന നിലയിൽ ഇസ്രായേലിന് ഊന്നൽ നൽകുന്നതുമായ സാഹചര്യങ്ങളാണ് ക്രൈസ്തവര്‍ക്ക് വെല്ലുവിളിയായി മാറുന്നത്.

ഇസ്രായേലിലെ 9.8 ദശലക്ഷം ജനങ്ങളിൽ 73% യഹൂദരാണ്. രാജ്യത്തെ ആകെ ജനസംഖ്യയുടെ 1.9% മാത്രമാണ് ക്രൈസ്തവര്‍. അതിൽ 75.3% അറബ് ക്രൈസ്തവരാണ്. നിലവില്‍ ഏതാണ്ട് 1,87,900 ക്രൈസ്തവര്‍ ഉണ്ടെന്നാണ് കണക്കുകളില്‍ പറയുന്നത്. അതേസമയം മധ്യപൂര്‍വ്വേഷ്യയില്‍ സമീപവര്‍ഷങ്ങളില്‍ ക്രിസ്ത്യന്‍ ജനസംഖ്യയില്‍ വളര്‍ച്ച രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയ ഏക രാഷ്ട്രം ഇസ്രായേല്‍ മാത്രമാണെന്നു ഇസ്രായേലിലെ സെന്‍ട്രല്‍ ബ്യൂറോ ഓഫ് സ്റ്റാറ്റിസ്റ്റിക്സ് (സി.ബി.എസ്) ഇക്കഴിഞ്ഞ ഡിസംബറില്‍ പുറത്തുവിട്ട കണക്കുകളില്‍ വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിരിന്നു.

Israel-A London-based energy company exploring the floor of the eastern Mediterranean has discovered the world’s most ancient ship ever found in the deep seas.

The ship contains completely intact pottery vessels used for storage, and is believed to be between 3,300 and 3,400 years old—perhaps just before the time Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt.

Workers for the Energean company found the ship in an extremely deep area of the sea, more than a mile below the surface and between 50 and 60 miles from the coast. Energean was taking a routine survey of the sea floor, and when the ship was found, it launched a mission to extract samples of the cargo, identified as Canaanite vessels from the Late Bronze Age.

The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) will conduct further investigations of the unique discovery.

Jacob Sharvit, who heads the IAA’s Marine Unit, explained, “The ship seems to have sunk in crisis, either due to a storm or to an attempted piracy attack—a well-known occurrence in the Late Bronze Age.”

He added, “This find reveals to us as never before the ancient mariners’ navigational skills, capable of traversing the Mediterranean Sea without a line of sight to any coast. From this geographical point, only the horizon is visible all around. To navigate, they probably used the celestial bodies, by taking sightings and angles of the sun and star positions.”

Dr. Karnit Bahartan, the lead environmental scientist for Energean, recalled, “About a year ago, during a survey, we saw the unusual sight of what appeared to be a large pile of jugs heaped on the sea floor. We are in ongoing contact with the Israel Antiquities Authority, and when we sent them the images it turned out to be a sensational discovery, far beyond what we could imagine.”

After the company’s technicians orchestrated a complex operation to bring up samples, they found, according to the IAA’s Shavit, “The vessel type identified in the cargo was designed as the most efficient means of transporting relatively cheap and mass-produced products such as oil, wine, and other agricultural products such as fruit.”

Sharvit explained that two other ancient shipwrecks with cargo from the Late Bronze Age were previously discovered in the Mediterranean, but both of them were located near the coast of Turkey.

The significance of the present deepwater find, according to Sharvit, is that “the academic assumption until now was that trade in that time was executed by safely flitting from port to port, hugging the coastline within eye contact. The discovery of this boat now changes our entire understanding of ancient mariner abilities: it is the first to be found at such a great distance with no line of sight to any landmass.”

The IAA plans a series of tours to view the vessels. Director Eli Escusido noted, “The important significance of these finds prompted a decision to exhibit these Canaanite vessels extracted from the sea floor, and thus to tell the public the story of this boat, in the framework of opening the Archaeological Campus for ‘sample taste’ tours this summer.”

Escusido continued, “These visits will afford people a glimpse of this unique edifice, its mosaics, and laboratories, even before the official opening of our expansive visitor center, scheduled two years from today.”

The earliest known Christian manuscript that dates back to the third century was recently auctioned for more than $3 million in London.

The Crosby-Schøyen Codex, which is considered the earliest Christian liturgical book and contains the earliest complete texts of 1 Peter and Jonah, was sold at Christie’s for a total of £3,065,000 or $3.9 million on June 11th.

According to the auction house’s website, the Crosby-Schøyen Codex is part of the Bodmer Papyri, a set of texts discovered in 1947 that included Biblical texts, Christian writings, and some non-Christian literary texts. It is also known as “the Dishna Papers” because of their discovery in Dishna, Egypt.

“Their discovery revolutionized understanding of the history of early Christian writings, for they surpass ‘in the quality of their preparation, in the length of their texts and in their textual significance’ all previous findings of Biblical papyri,” reads a statement from Christie’s.

The texts were later acquired by Dr. Martin Schøyen Bodmer in the 1980s.

The manuscript is written in Sahidic Coptic, a dialect of an ancient Egyptian language, and contains five texts including the complete first version of the First Epistle of Peter and the Book of Jonah ever found. Experts believe the books were written down on the ancient papyri between 250 and 350 AD.

Scholars Albert Pietersma and Susan Comstock told PBS the Codex was probably used as an Easter lectionary, or a collection of readings during a Christian worship service.

“The earliest monks in Upper Egypt in the earliest Christian monastery were using this very book to celebrate the earliest Easter celebrations, only a few hundred years after Christ and only a hundred or so years after the last Gospel was written,” Eugenio Donadoni, Christie’s senior specialist in books and manuscripts, told the BBC.

Donadoni added that the books hold “monumental importance as a witness to the earliest spread of Christianity around the Mediterranean.”
