Microsoft has announced the time of death for Skype. In its push to promote Microsoft Teams, the company has announced that starting May 5, Skype will no longer be available. “In order to streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs, we will be retiring Skype in May 2025 to focus on Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communications and collaboration hub”, Microsoft announced in an official blog post. The company also insists that existing Skype users either migrate or shift their data to the Teams platform.

Microsoft plans to make the transition from Skype to Teams gradual over the next three months. The company has been encouraging this shift since Teams was launched, and in the blog post announcing Skype’s retirement, it emphasised that both platforms offer many of the same features, with Teams providing additional capabilities.

To make this transition easy, Microsoft says Skype users will be able to use their current credentials to log in to Microsoft Teams for free on any supported device. Essentially, Skype users will be able to continue making one-on-one and group calls, sending messages, and sharing files, along with using features like hosting meetings, managing calendars, and joining communities, on Team for free. “By logging in to Teams with a Skype account, chats and contacts will automatically appear in the app so you can quickly pick up where you left off,” says Microsoft. “During the transition period, Teams users can call and chat with Skype users and Skype users can do the same with Teams users”, it adds.

During the transition from Skype to Teams, users have two choices. They can either move to Microsoft Teams for free by logging in with their existing Skype credentials. Once they are signed in, all Skype chats and contacts will automatically transfer to Teams, allowing users to pick up their conversations right where they left off. Alternatively, users who prefer not to migrate can export their Skype data, including chats, contacts, and call history.

In addition to that, users also have the choice to use Skype alongside Teams, which is until May 5. To do that, simply download the Teams app and log in with existing Skype credentials, and find all their existing chats and contacts ready to use.

Notably, Microsoft is discontinuing paid Skype services for new users, including Skype Credit and calling subscriptions. Existing subscribers can use their credit and plans until the end of their next renewal period while remaining Skype Credit will continue to be available. Also, Microsoft says that even after May 5, paid users will still be able to access Skype Dial Pad through the Skype web portal or within Teams.

Instagram alternative Flashes publicly launched its Bluesky-based photo-sharing app on the App Store this week, gaining nearly 30,000 downloads in its first 24 hours. The app offers a classic Instagram-like experience, allowing users to upload up to four photos and videos of up to a minute in length.

Built by Berlin-based developer Sebastian Vogelsang, Flashes runs on the same underlying protocol that powers Bluesky, the AT Protocol (or atproto for short).

Because it’s based on Bluesky, the social networking startup with now over 32 million users, Flashes has access to a built-in audience. That is, all the posts you make on the Flashes app are compatible with Bluesky, meaning they can reach a wider audience beyond those using the Flashes app itself.

While Flashes resembles Instagram in some aspects, it’s more customizable.

Instead of being trapped by an algorithm of the company’s making, people on Flashes can access any of the more than 50,000 custom feeds on Bluesky that let people curate the network’s content however they want. Plus, the app offers built-in feeds for both the top posts and latest posts across Bluesky’s network.

Other features are designed to cater to photographers looking to showcase their work.

A “Portfolio Mode” lets you curate your profile by choosing what media will appear to visitors, for example. That way, you can feature your best photographs up front when people visit your profile.

Posts created in Flashes itself can be edited using built-in photo filters, too, similar to Instagram.

Another new feature focuses on curated feeds from artists.

Flashes is kicking off this recent update with images from the Blacksky community. (Blacksky has been building out Bluesky tools for the Black community, including Blacksky feeds, its own moderation service, and other technical features.)

Vogelsang says he’s had some conversations with investors around funding and is open to opportunities. The app had reached 40,500 downloads as of Thursday and is one of several new efforts building on top of the Bluesky platform.

WhatsApp will soon benefit from an optional integration with Meta Accounts Centre with the aim of delivering a more connected experience, the company announced on Tuesday. This move will enable users to share their WhatsApp statuses automatically on other Meta Platforms’ apps such as Facebook and Instagram. It is also claimed to make it easier and quicker to log in to multiple Meta apps with a single sign-on. Additionally, the company says it will introduce more universal features across its social media apps and inform users about the changes upon rollout.

Meta Platforms detailed the addition of WhatsApp to its Accounts Centre over the next few months in a newsroom post. As per the company, the move is completely optional, and users can still choose to not add their WhatsApp accounts to the Accounts Centre. However, doing so is said to enable access to features more seamlessly across apps. They can reshare updates from their WhatsApp Status to Facebook or Instagram Stories directly. This negates the need to post multiple times across different apps.

The option will be introduced globally, but its complete rollout may take place in a phased manner. When available, users will see the option in WhatsApp settings or it will appear when trying to take action across accounts, such as re-sharing status to other Meta Platforms’ apps.

Further, the Accounts Centre integration brings single sign-on for all three apps, allowing users to log back into them with fewer steps. The company says it will also roll out new features such as the ability to manage your avatars, Meta AI stickers and Imagine Me creations in one place across apps.

However, Meta Platforms emphasises that privacy is still its priority and even when WhatsApp accounts are connected to the Meta Platforms’ Accounts Centre, personal messages and calls are still protected by end-to-end encryption and not even the company itself can read them.
