India’s cooperative movement is preparing to steer into the digital transport economy with the launch of Bharat, a cooperative-owned taxi service aiming to rival market leaders Ola and Uber by the year-end.
Spearheaded by the Multi-State Sahakari Taxi Cooperative Ltd, a union of eight key cooperative institutions. the venture has already onboarded 200 drivers across Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. The cooperative was officially registered on 6 June.
Backed by an authorised capital of ₹300 crore, the initiative draws support from leading cooperatives including the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO), and Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF). It also counts Krishak Bharati Cooperative Ltd, NABARD, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), and National Cooperative Exports Ltd (NCEL) among its founding members.
“This is a completely cooperative-driven initiative with no government stake,” NCDC Deputy Managing Director Rohit Gupta informed. “The key objective is to ensure better returns to drivers and provide quality, safe and affordable services to passengers.”
The announcement builds on Cooperation Minister Amit Shah’s earlier declaration that a cooperative taxi platform would be operational by the end of 2025, as part of a larger push to revitalise India’s cooperative sector through policy reforms and entrepreneurial ventures.
A tender has already been floated to finalise a technology partner for the ride-hailing app, which is expected to be operational by December. “We will finalise the technology partner in a few days,” Gupta confirmed.
The app will function as a pan-India digital platform, with cooperative pricing at its core. IIM-Bangalore and a tech consultant have been roped in to shape the marketing and branding strategy. Membership drives are currently under way to further expand the operational footprint.
The cooperative model is designed to deliver higher margins to drivers by cutting down commissions and platform fees that dominate existing ride-hailing services. Industry watchers say it may pose a serious alternative in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, where cooperative networks are traditionally strong.
The founding cooperatives are also engaging with regional cooperative bodies to scale the fleet and broaden outreach ahead of the launch.
The venture marks a rare and ambitious foray by the cooperative sector into the tech-dominated mobility space, a market projected to reach a value of over USD 25 billion in India by 2030. The entry of Bharat reflects an evolving strategy to harness cooperative strengths for digital disruption.

That dream international getaway can become complicated when the rules change after you have already shortlisted your destination. In 2026, Indian travellers may also need to check whether a country still offers visa on arrival or has moved to an e-visa, ETA or another pre-travel process.
According to the latest 2026 roundup, nine countries have changed visa or entry procedures for Indian passport holders. The updates span destinations from Laos and Qatar to Sri Lanka, Iran, Chile, Ghana, Venezuela, Cape Verde and Nicaragua. In some cases, the change involves moving from visa on arrival to an online application, while others involve revised visa categories or digital authorisation systems.
What does this mean for your next holiday? A familiar destination may still be open to Indian tourists, but its entry process could look different from what older travel guides suggest. Here is a look at the nine countries, what has changed and what travellers should check before heading to the airport
Which Countries Have Changed Visa Rules For Indians?
According to a comparison of the 2025 and current Passport Index listings reported by NDTV, these nine countries have changed their visa or entry processes for Indian passport holders. The updates do not all mean stricter rules. Some have moved towards online applications, while others have removed visa-on-arrival access.
Laos
Visa-on-arrival has been replaced by an e-visa. Travellers must apply online and get approval before departure instead of sorting it at the airport.
Qatar
The earlier visa-on-arrival option is gone. Indian citizens now need an e-visa in advance.
Sri Lanka
What was listed as e-visa on arrival in 2025 has changed to an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Approval is required before the trip.
Iran
Visa-on-arrival ended in November 2025. An e-visa is now mandatory.
Chile, Ghana and Venezuela
These three have moved in a more convenient direction. Previously listed as “visa required,” they now offer an e-visa option, making the process fully online.
Cape Verde
From January 1, 2026, the country scrapped visa-on-arrival for citizens of 96 countries, including India. A prior visa is now needed.

In a major overhaul aimed at bringing down fatalities caused by poor driver judgment on roads, Keralam is set to become the first Indian state to introduce a computer-based Hazard Perception Test for driving licence applicants, bringing local standards on a par with several western nations.
The new computer test evaluates an applicant’s ability to spot road hazards in real time before they cause real-world crashes. Transport Commissioner Nagaraju Chakilam has made the test mandatory statewide from December 1.
The decision stems from the recognition that conventional yard and road tests fail to simulate critical risk scenarios. Key safety factors such as navigating sharp curves, driving through heavy downpours, dealing with night-time glare and reacting to sudden pedestrian or animal movement-cannot be safely or reliably recreated during a standard road test.
Under the new format, candidates will sit before a computer screen to watch 10 video clips, each a minute long, featuring up to two potential real-world hazards. Much like an interactive simulation, applicants must click a mouse or tracker the instant they spot a developing hazard, such as a child chasing a ball into the street or a vehicle abruptly pulling out of a side lane.
Out of 100 total marks, full points will be awarded for quick, timely click-responses, while delayed reactions will lead to deductions.
Candidates will have to secure at least 60% (60 marks) to qualify for the practical driving round. The test will expand the state’s driving evaluation into a four-part sequence: online learner’s test (Part I), the 30-day waiting period, computer-based Hazard Perception Test (Part II), and finally ground (Part III) and road tests (Part IV).
The initiative has been in the works for the last two years under the transport commissioner’s leadership as part of the MVD’s ‘Mission Zero’ campaign, which was launched in 2024 and targets high-risk groups, including pedestrians, motorcyclists and heavy vehicle drivers, to achieve zero road fatalities by 2040.
To ensure a smooth transition, the department will give people adequate time to adapt to the system. Authorised motor driving schools across the state have been directed to begin hazard perception training using open-source tools. Regional transport officers (RTOs) and joint RTOs will launch statewide inspections on October 1 to ensure driving schools have installed the necessary computer setups.
