2025-ൽ ലോകമെമ്പാടും കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടത് 17 മിഷ്ണറിമാർ
വത്തിക്കാന്‍ സിറ്റി: പ്രത്യാശയുടെ ജൂബിലി വർഷമായ 2025-ൽ ലോകമെമ്പാടും 17 മിഷ്ണറിമാർ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടതായി കണക്ക്. ഇന്നലെ ഡിസംബർ 30ന് ഫിഡെസ് ഏജൻസിയാണ് വാർഷിക റിപ്പോർട്ട് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചത്. ഇതോടെ 2000 മുതൽ ജീവൻ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട മിഷ്ണറിമാരുടെ എണ്ണം 626 ആയി ഉയർന്നു. വിശ്വാസത്തെ പ്രതി മരിച്ചവരില്‍ വൈദികര്‍, കന്യാസ്ത്രീകൾ, സെമിനാരി വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ, അൽമായർ എന്നിവര്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്നു.
ഭൂഖണ്ഡം തിരിച്ചുള്ള കണക്കുകള്‍ പ്രകാരം 2025-ൽ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ മിഷ്ണറിമാര്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടത് ആഫ്രിക്കയിലാണ്. ആറ് വൈദികർ, രണ്ട് സെമിനാരി വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ, രണ്ട് മതബോധന അധ്യാപകര്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടെ പത്ത് മിഷ്ണറിമാര്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു. അമേരിക്കയില്‍ നാല് മിഷ്ണറിമാരാണ് കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടത്. ഇതില്‍ രണ്ട് വൈദികരും രണ്ട് കന്യാസ്ത്രീകളും ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്നു.
കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട മിഷ്ണറിമാരില്‍ ഒരു വൈദികനും അല്‍മായനും ഉള്‍പ്പെടെ രണ്ട് പേർ ഏഷ്യയിൽനിന്നുള്ളവരാണ്. ഒരു വൈദികന്‍ യൂറോപ്പിൽ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു. അതേസമയം അനൌദ്യോഗിക കണക്കുകള്‍ പ്രകാരം ലോകമെമ്പാടും നൂറുകണക്കിന് മിഷ്ണറിമാരും ആയിരകണക്കിന് ക്രൈസ്തവര്‍ ക്രിസ്തു വിശ്വാസത്തെ പ്രതി കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നാണ് വിവിധ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടുകള്‍ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.

Even the hope of missionaries and pastoral workers who are killed is “a hope filled with immortality because their witness lives on as a prophecy of the victory of good over evil.”
This is one of the phrases of Pope Leo XIV chosen to introduce the usual report published at the end of the year by Fides on Catholic missionaries and pastoral workers killed around the world. It suggests in a simple way the source of Christian hope, the pledge of a life that does not die.
The news about the lives and circumstances of their deaths shows once again this year that the missionaries killed were not in the spotlight for spectacular deeds. They bore witness to Christ in their everyday life, even in contexts marked by violence and conflict.

According to data verified by Fides, 17 missionaries were killed worldwide in 2025, including priests, women religious, seminarians, and lay people.
The breakdown by continent shows that the highest number of pastoral workers killed in 2025 was in Africa, where ten missionaries (six priests, two seminarians, and two catechists) were murdered. Four missionaries were killed in the Americas (two priests and two nuns), and two in Asia (one priest and one layperson). One priest was killed in Europe.
In recent years, Africa and America have alternated at the top of this tragic ranking.
In detail, among the 10 pastoral workers killed in Africa, five lost their lives in Nigeria, two in Burkina Faso, one in Sierra Leone, one in Kenya and one in Sudan.
Among the four missionaries killed in America, two nuns were murdered in Haiti, one priest was killed in Mexico and another priest of Indian origin was killed in the United States.
Of the two priests killed in Asia, one was brutally murdered in Myanmar and the other was killed in the Philippines.
The only priest killed in Europe lost his life in Poland.
Among the pastoral workers killed in 2025 is the young Nigerian seminarian Emmanuel Alabi, who died during a forced march imposed on him by his captors, who had attacked the minor seminary in Ivianokpodi and, after wounding him, they had kidnapped him along with two of his companions. Sister Evanette Onezaire and Sister Jeanne Voltaire were also murdered by members of one of the armed gangs that hold Haiti in their grip; there is also Donald Martin, the first Burmese Catholic priest killed in the civil conflict that is bloodying Myanmar, whose lifeless body, mutilated and disfigured, was found by some parishioners in the parish complex.
From 2000 to 2025, 626 Catholic missionaries were killed worldwide.

An American pastor has been arrested and charged with a crime for praying and peacefully demonstrating on a sidewalk in front of the Chinese embassy in our nation’s capital. His case is now advancing in the courts after a recent arraignment.
The American Center for Law and Justice, which is defending Rev. Patrick Mahoney in the case, contends that the U.S. government acquiesced to demands from China’s communist regime to arrest the pastor.
Shortly after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the U.S., Mahoney was protesting Chinese human rights abuses while standing on American soil, on the public sidewalk outside the embassy.
Mahoney, who is director of the Christian Defense Coalition, has reportedly protested more than 300 times at the exact same spot over the years, and Chinese officials have complained in the past. In 2023, the Secret Service nearly arrested him for protesting there, but the ACLJ intervened and the government backed down.
That’s not what happened on September 28. “Sadly, this time the Chinese delegation was able to persuade the Secret Service to do its bidding and arrest this American pastor right here on American soil. The criminal charge: unlawful entry, as if he were breaking and entering. It’s ridiculous,” Jordan Sekulow of the ACLJ stated.
Not only was Mahoney arrested, but he’s now facing a trial. His arraignment was held last week, on October 21.
He posted on social media, “My own government arrested me for demonstrating and praying on a public sidewalk. Jailed me. Criminally charged me. Ordered me to stay off the public sidewalk and are now criminally prosecuting me in court.”
Mahoney pleaded not guilty, but he reports the DC court issued an order telling him he cannot go back on the public sidewalk near the embassy until the case is decided. The criminal charges against him are moving forward, and his next court date will be November 20.
He’s vowing to keep fighting for his First Amendment rights. “We will never be silenced,” he said.

A new report from the Pew Research Center challenges recent claims of a religious revival in the United States. The study found that religious practice has remained relatively stable since 2020, despite mixed trends among young adults.
According to the report, 34% of U.S. adults attended religious services in person in the past month, while 45% either attended or watched services online. These figures are the highest since Pew began tracking them in July 2020. However, the report highlights mixed signals among young adults, particularly those born between 2004 and 2008, who reported relatively high religious attendance. In contrast, those born between 2000 and 2003 were among the least religious Americans.
The report also found that the youngest men reported greater religious observance than the youngest women, a trend not previously seen in Pew’s surveys. However, researchers cautioned that it remains unclear whether this trend will continue.
EWTN News noted that the youngest Republicans attend religious services at higher rates than older Republicans, but younger Democrats also reported higher levels of attendance than older ones. This suggests that the trend is not limited to one political group.
The Religion Unplugged report emphasized that while the youngest adults show high rates of attendance, their overall religious commitment remains less distinctive. The findings suggest that the notion of a broad-based religious revival among young Americans remains unproven.
