More than 25 Christians, including a pastor and his pregnant wife, were allegedly assaulted during a Sunday prayer gathering in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, renewing concerns about the safety and religious freedom of Christian communities in the region.
According to the Progressive Christian Alliance (PCA), a network of pastors, church leaders and social workers, the attack occurred on May 31 in Sadrapal, a village in Sukma district. About 70 Christians had gathered for their regular Sunday worship service when a group of non-Christian tribal residents allegedly disrupted the meeting and attacked participants.
The gathering was led by Pastor Hunga Mandavi, a local Christian fellowship leader. Witnesses said several worshippers, including Mandavi, were beaten during the incident.
Community members expressed particular concern over the reported assault on Mandavi’s pregnant wife, saying the attack left many local Christians fearful and traumatized.
According to Christian representatives, between 25 and 30 believers were injured, including at least five who suffered serious wounds. Some received treatment at the primary health center in Tongpal, while others were referred to the district hospital in Sukma.
Local Christian leaders said the worship service was peaceful and rejected suggestions that the violence stemmed from a land dispute. They maintained that the attack was motivated by hostility toward their faith and religious activities.
Pastor Simon Digbal Tandi, coordinator of the PCA, told UCA News on June 2 that attacks against Christians have increased since the state’s revised anti-conversion law came into effect.
“Almost every other day, we hear of such incidents in the state, and this can disturb communal harmony in local communities. Christian people are very worried,” he said.
Tandi said a First Information Report (FIR) had been filed and several individuals were named in the complaint. The affected families have called for a fair and transparent investigation and legal action against those responsible.
Christian leaders and human rights advocates urged authorities to conduct a prompt and impartial investigation, ensure the safety of victims and witnesses, provide adequate medical care to the injured, and take steps to prevent similar incidents.
The incident comes amid continuing debate over the Chhattisgarh Freedom of Religion Act, which replaces a 58-year-old legal framework, and introduces stricter regulations and tougher penalties for religious conversions deemed to have been carried out through force, coercion or fraud.
Supporters say the legislation is intended to prevent unlawful conversions. Critics, however, argue that some provisions could be misused and create fear among religious minorities and vulnerable communities.
The latest attack comes amid growing concern over violence against Christians in Chhattisgarh. According to the New Delhi-based United Christian Forum, the state recorded 165 incidents targeting Christians in 2024, the second-highest number reported in India.
Christians account for less than 2 percent of Chhattisgarh’s population of about 30 million people.

A 46-year-old pastor was murdered inside his home-cum-church at Gandhi Camp of Batala in broad daylight on Thursday morning, triggering panic in the area.
The victim, identified as Balwinder Paul, alias Laddi, was reportedly alone at his residence when two unidentified men allegedly entered the premises around 9.30am and attacked him with a sharp-edged metal-cutting tool. He suffered a severe throat injury in the assault.
Family members and neighbours rushed Paul to the Batala civil hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Paul lived alone and operated a church from his residence, where members of the Christian community regularly gathered for prayers.
His brother, Mohinderpal, said Paul had no known personal rivalry or enmity with anyone.
Following the incident, a police team led by the Civil Lines station house officer reached the hospital and the crime scene. Investigators examined the premises and began collecting evidence, while CCTV footage from the surrounding area was taken up for analysis.
Police have registered a murder case and are questioning witnesses as part of the investigation. A local resident, Naresh Kumar, named as a suspect based on preliminary statements provided by the family, has been booked under murder charges and a hunt has been launched to nab him.
The victim’s body has been sent for postmortem examination. The motive behind the killing remains unclear and police said several leads are being pursued to apprehend the assailants.
