Harassment and Persecution Faced by Egyptian Christians
Egypt — In a harrowing tale of religious persecution, Amina* endured harassment and threats in Beni Suef Governorate last year after moving there to begin her newly married life. However, her happiness was short-lived as she encountered hostility from locals. Disturbing incidents of verbal abuse, including obscene language and threats, became a routine for Amina, solely because of her Christian faith.
The situation took a violent turn when her husband returned home from work one day to find three men waiting for him. They subjected him to a brutal assault, leaving him unconscious before hastily fleeing the scene. Upon regaining consciousness, Amina’s husband was informed about the severity of the threats and attempts to kidnap his wife, coupled with demands for her conversion to Islam.
She shared, “They were harassing me, threatening me, and trying to kidnap me, and that they wanted me to convert to Islam and wear the hijab. When I screamed and threatened to go to the police, they said: ‘You Christians, you worshipers of the cross, will not be able to do anything. This is our city, and we will cleanse it of people like you. Either you are with us, or you are against us, and whoever resists us will not live.’”
In the aftermath of these horrifying events, Amina and her husband decided to seek sanctuary in a new city to start a new life. Such persecution cases illustrate the threats Christians, especially Christian women, face in parts of Egypt, and the lack of protection that they have from extremist neighbors from harassing and attacking them.

ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹി: ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയയില്‍ സ്റ്റുഡന്റ് വീസാ വ്യവസ്ഥയില്‍ മാറ്റം വരുത്തി സര്‍ക്കാര്‍. മലയാളികള്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ള വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ക്ക് പുതിയ നിര്‍ദേശം ചെറിയ തോതിലെങ്കിലും തിരിച്ചടിയുണ്ടാക്കും. സ്റ്റുഡന്റ് വീസയില്‍ ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയയിലേക്ക് പോകുകയും അവിടെ പഠനശേഷം തൊഴില്‍ കണ്ടെത്തുകയും ചെയ്യാനായി ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് ആളുകളാണ് ഓരോ വര്‍ഷവും അപേക്ഷിക്കുന്നത്. ഏഴു മാസത്തിനിടെ ഇത് രണ്ടാം തവണയാണ് നിക്ഷേപ തുക വര്‍ധിപ്പിച്ചത്.
സ്റ്റുഡന്റ് വിസ ലഭിക്കാനുള്ള അര്‍ഹത നേടാന്‍ വിദേശ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ കാണിക്കേണ്ട സേവിംഗ്സ് നിക്ഷേപത്തിന്റെ തോത് ഉയര്‍ത്തി. നിക്ഷേപമായി 16 ലക്ഷം രൂപ കാണിക്കണമെന്നാണ് പുതിയ ചട്ടത്തില്‍ പറയുന്നത്.
ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയയിലേക്കുള്ള കുടിയേറ്റ നിരക്ക് വന്‍തോതില്‍ ഉയര്‍ന്നതോടെയാണ് സര്‍ക്കാരന്‍ ചട്ടങ്ങളില്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ നിയന്ത്രണങ്ങള്‍ ഏര്‍പ്പെടുത്തിയത്. കുടിയേറ്റം പകുതിയായി കുറയ്ക്കുക എന്നതിന്റെ കൂടി ഭാഗമായാണ് ഇപ്പോല്‍ സ്റ്റുഡന്റ് വീസയില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ള നിക്ഷേപത്തുക തുടര്‍ച്ചയായി വര്‍ധിപ്പിച്ചത്.

China — In April 2021, Chinese authorities arrested 10 Christians for selling and distributing Bibles in Hohhot, the capital city of Inner Mongolia — an autonomous region in northern China. Just last month, a judge sentenced one of these believers to prison.
Ban Yanhong was sentenced on April 15, 2024, to five years in prison for “illegal business operations,” or illegally selling and distributing Bibles to Christians in Inner Mongolia.
Ban Yanhong’s husband, Ji Heying, claimed that authorities charged his wife because they considered her to be a key figure in the group. Five of the original 10 Christians have been released on bail but could still face prosecution for their role in the Bible distributions. The other four Christians are awaiting their trial.
Originally, the 10 Hohhot Christians purchased the Bibles legally from a church in Nanjing associated with the Three-Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM). TSPM churches are the only legal churches in China and are controlled by the Communist government.
In Ban’s case, prosecutors argued that even though the Bibles were initially purchased legally in Nanjing, selling and distributing them in Inner Mongolia by unregistered house church members was illegal.
