High Court in India Reschedules Challenge to Anti-Conversion Law
India – The Allahabad High Court, located in India’s Uttar Pradesh state, has rescheduled hearing the legal challenge to the state’s new anti-conversion law. Originally, the challenge was scheduled to be heard on October 5, however, due to issues registering multiple pleas against the law, the hearing has been rescheduled for October 22.
On November 28, 2020, the Uttar Pradesh State Cabinet approved a draft ordinance entitled the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance intended to curb forcible or dishonest religious conversions. The ordinance was later enacted by the Uttar Pradesh State Legislature, becoming one of India’s newest anti-conversion laws.
Since the law’s enactment, radical Hindu nationalists across Uttar Pradesh have used the anti-conversion law as legal cover to persecute the state’s Christians and Muslims. In recent months, dozens of false forced conversion charges have been leveled against Christian leaders, leading to the arrest of over 100 people.
The constitutionality of the anti-conversion law has been challenged and a hearing on this issue was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 5. However, this hearing was rescheduled by the Allahabad High Court after the Officer of Registry failed to schedule all pleas against the law for the October 5 hearing.
According to the pleas against the anti-conversion law, the law is unconstitutional because it violates an individual’s fundamental right to profess, practice, and propagate the religion of their choice. This right is protected by Article 25 of India’s constitution. According to one plea:
“The very concept of forcing an individual to explain and justify a decision, which is closely personal to him/her, before an officer of the State is contrary to Constitutionalism. The constitution imposes limitations on State power and burdens the State to explain and justify the decisions taken by it affecting the rights and lives of citizens.”
Radical Hindu nationalists use the specter of mass religious conversions to Christianity and Islam as justification to pass laws limiting religious freedom. According to these nationalists, Indian Christians and Muslims are accused of converting poor Hindus to Christianity and Islam in mass by fraudulent means.
In states where similar anti-conversion laws are currently enacted, including Odisha, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, they are widely abused. Radical nationalists falsely accuse Christians of forcefully converting individuals to Christianity to justify harassment and assault. Local police often overlook violence perpetrated against Christians due to false accusations of forced conversion.

ടെക്സാസ്: ജീവിക്കുവാന്‍ സാധ്യതയില്ലായെന്ന് ഡോക്ടര്‍മാര്‍ തന്നെ വിധിയെഴുതിയ തന്റെ 22 ആഴ്ച മാത്രം പ്രായമുള്ള കുരുന്നിന് വേണ്ടി ഈശോയുടെ ഗാനം ആലപിക്കുന്ന പിതാവിന്റെ ടിക്ടോക്ക് വീഡിയോ സമൂഹമാധ്യമങ്ങളില്‍ തരംഗമാകുന്നു. അമേരിക്കയിലെ ടെക്സാസ് സ്വദേശിയായ ഡാനിയല്‍ ജോണ്‍സന്റെ ഗാനാലാപനത്തിനിടെ മകനായ റെമിംഗ്ടണ്‍ ഹെയ്സ് ജോണ്‍സണ്‍ എന്ന കുരുന്ന് 35 സെക്കന്റോളം തന്റെ കൈ ഉയര്‍ത്തിപ്പിടിക്കുന്നതും അത് കാണുമ്പോള്‍ പിതാവ് കരയുന്നതും ആയിരങ്ങളാണ് പങ്കുവെച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ജോണ്‍സന്റെ പത്നിതന്നെയാണ് ഈ വീഡിയോ ചിത്രീകരിച്ച് ടിക്ടോക്കില്‍ പോസ്റ്റ്‌ ചെയ്തത്. 12 ലക്ഷത്തോളം ആളുകള്‍ കണ്ട ഈ വീഡിയോക്ക് ഇതുവരെ 2,35,200 ലൈക്കുകൾ ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നതും ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. കുടുംബത്തിനു പ്രോത്സാഹനമേകിക്കൊണ്ട് നൂറുകണക്കിന് ആളുകളാണ് വീഡിയോ ഷെയര്‍ ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ബെല്‍ കൌണ്ടിയിലെ ബെയ്ലര്‍ സ്കോട്ട് ആന്‍ഡ് വൈറ്റ് മെഡിക്കല്‍ സെന്ററില്‍ ചികിത്സയില്‍ കഴിയുന്ന തന്റെ കുരുന്നിന് വേണ്ടി പ്രശസ്ത ക്രിസ്ത്യന്‍ ബാന്‍ഡായ എലവേഷന്‍ വര്‍ഷിപ്പിന്റെ “ഹല്ലേലൂയ ഹിയര്‍ ബിലോ” എന്ന ഗാനമാണ് ജോണ്‍സണ്‍ പാടിയത്.
“നമ്മുടെ രാജാവായ യേശു ക്രിസ്തു സിംഹാസനസ്ഥനായി. എന്നെന്നേക്കും എല്ലാ സ്തുതികളും അവന് മാത്രം. ഹല്ലേലൂയ” എന്നാണ് ഈ ഗാനത്തിന്റെ വരികളില്‍ പ്രധാനമായും പറയുന്നത്. “മാസം തികയുന്നതിനു നാല് മാസം മുന്‍പ് ജനിച്ച തന്റെ മകന്‍ ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുവാന്‍ 21% സാധ്യത മാത്രമാണ് ഡോക്ടര്‍മാര്‍ കല്‍പ്പിച്ചത്. ഇന്നും അവൻ ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ദൈവമാണ് അതിന്റെ കാരണക്കാരന്‍. ദൈവം വിശ്വസ്തനാണെന്നതിന്റെ തെളിവാണ് എന്റെ മകന്‍” – ഇതാണ് ജോണ്‍സണ്‍ സമൂഹമാധ്യമത്തില്‍ കുറിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.
ടെക്സാസ് ടു ലൈഫ് എന്ന പ്രോലൈഫ് സംഘടനയും ഈ വീഡിയോ പോസ്റ്റ്‌ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. മാസം തികയാതെ ജനിക്കുന്ന കുട്ടികളുടെ വിജയകരമായ ചികിത്സ വളര്‍ച്ചയുടെ ഓരോ ഘട്ടത്തിലും ജീവന്റെ മൂല്യം ഉയര്‍ത്തിക്കാട്ടുകയും ഭ്രൂണഹത്യ അനുകൂലികള്‍ക്കെതിരെ യുക്തിസഹവും ധാര്‍മ്മികവുമായ വിടവ് സൃഷ്ടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നുവെന്നു സംഘടനയുടെ പോസ്റ്റില്‍ പറയുന്നു. ഓരോ ജീവനും അമൂല്യമാണെന്നും അത് ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ദാനമാണെന്നുമുള്ള ഏറ്റുപറച്ചിലുമായുള്ള വീഡിയോ എല്ലാ സോഷ്യൽ മീഡിയ പ്ലാറ്റ്ഫോമുകളിലും തരംഗമാണെന്നതും ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്.
