Over 100 Religious Buildings Destroyed by Burmese Military

Myanmar – Since the February 2021 coup, which deposed Myanmar’s democratically elected government, the Burmese military has been on a rampage against its own civilians. The military junta that now controls the government continues to destroy religious buildings throughout the country.
Since last year, the military junta has conducted artillery attacks and airstrikes on civilian areas in Chin State, the Sagaing and Magwe regions, and Kayah state. Local people have been forming militias to resist these violent attacks, which have intentionally destroyed religious buildings often used as shelter by civilians during the fighting.
In the majority-Christian Chin State, the military junta destroyed over 35 churches and 15 other Christian-affiliated buildings between February 2021 and January 2022. In Kayah State, also majority-Christian, around 12 churches were destroyed in the same period.
In May of last year, the military forces’ continued shelling of the Sacred Heart Church in Loikaw, the capital of Kayah State, killed four people who were sheltering there and damaged the building extensively. Myanmar’s Cardinal Charles Maung Bo published a plea to the regime, urging them to stop targeting religious buildings.
Unfortunately, the military ignored his request and shelled one of the main churches in the Demoso township in Kayah State, the Queen of Peace Church, on June 6. Since then, the regime has shelled many more churches, Christian buildings, and several Buddhist monasteries where civilians were sheltering.
According to the news site The Irrawaddy, a Karenni Christian leader has said that Myanmar’s regime has shelled churches even during times of peace between the military junta and the grassroots resistance forces.
“They are attacking the churches intentionally to suppress the spirit of Christian people by attacking their sacred churches. I condemn their bad intentions,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons.

Ancient Writings Referring to King David Confirmed on Stone in Louvre Museum

Israel — Researchers at the Louvre Museum in Paris have confirmed that the text on an ancient stone on display there, the Moabite Stone, also known as the Mesha Stele, refers to King David in the Bible.
The Moabite Stone, dating back to 840 BC, was found fragmented, in 1868, in the region of Moab in Jordan, about 15 miles east of the Dead Sea.
The stone sustained further damage in 1869, but archaeologists had earlier made a paper-mache likeness of the text, which was written in an extinct Moabite language, and described events in the Book of Kings from the Old Testament.
The stele includes phrases such as “House of David” and “Altar of David,” but the damage to the stone’s face made accurate translation of the text difficult.
By using newer technology, including enhancing techniques in digital photography, researchers verified that the text does refer to the biblical King David.
The Moabite Stone is about 3 feet tall by 2 feet wide and was hewn out of black basalt. On it was inscribed the deeds of the Moabite King Mesha, including territorial battles against Judah, Israel, and Edom.
The description of the House of David on the stone is only five letters, BTDWD, which in Hebrew would refer to BT or Beit (House) and DWD (David).
The references in the Bible are found in 2 Kings, Chapter 3.

Iranian Christians Persevere Under Intense Persecution

Christians continue to face increased pressure and persecution as the Iranian authorities tighten their grip on the nation in response to nationwide protests since September 2022 that have shaken the Islamic Republic of Iran’s entire social and political system. Christian converts from Islam in particular face persecution, including imprisonment of house church leaders and denial of their basic rights as citizens.
Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that brought the current Iranian government to power, hundreds of thousands, some estimates say up to a million, Iranians have converted to Christianity. This rapidly growing minority of Christian converts have no formal recognition under Iranian law, and as such receive no basic protection. They are considered as direct enemies of the Iranian state, subject to direct violence and arrest of their leaders and house church members, and under the current structure of law, they are treated as apostates and thus have absolutely no freedom of belief.
Despite these persecutions, the number of converts in Iran continue to grow. The care and charity demonstrated by Iranian house churches during the increased public and economic challenges encountered during COVID-19 further strengthened the witness of Christians across the nation. Also, the testimonies of Christian converts who have refused to renounce their new faith identity have impacted have both challenged and encouraged many more to consider following Christ.
