Pastor Jailed and Released on False Charges of Forced Conversions

India — A house church in Uttar Pradesh was raided by police in the middle of their Sunday service early last month, leaving a congregation temporarily without a pastor. During the raid, police confiscated church property as evidence, including Bibles, the PA system, and the pulpit.

Pastor Chotelal, along with four other members of his church, were then taken into custody on charges of converting Hindus to Christianity. After being interrogated for several hours, the four men arrested with the pastor were released the same day. However, Pastor Chotelal remained in custody for more than a month.

The pastor has been serving in his village for more than 30 years, and on average, 100 people gather in his house for worship every Sunday. He has faced increasingly difficult and aggressive opposition since he started his church planting ministry, but this is the first time he had to spend time in jail and be released on bail.

“Almost daily, police come to my house to check if I am involved in conducting prayers,” Pastor Chotelal said. “I have had to shut down many worship services in every church that I oversee in the area. However, through it all, God has been good to us.”

Speaking about his time in the jail, Pastor Chotelal said, “I met eight other Christians who were being held for the same reasons, and it was a great time to extend mutual encouragement and counsel to one another. I was also able to witness to inmates of other faith backgrounds and give them Bibles.”

Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India, has become an increasingly difficult place for Christians to practice their faith in recent years. In the three years since the state government enacted anti-conversion laws, hundreds of churches have been shut down, and more than three hundred Christians have been jailed on false charges of forced conversions.

തിരുവല്ല: സാമ്പത്തീക പ്രതിസന്ധിയുടെ പേരിൽ ന്യൂനപക്ഷ വിദ്യാർഥികളുടെ സ്കോളർഷിപ്പ് വെട്ടിക്കുറച്ച നടപടി ന്യൂനപക്ഷ സമൂഹത്തോടുള്ള കടുത്ത വഞ്ചനയാണെന്ന് പെന്തകോസ്ത് കൗൺസിൽ ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ കേരളാ സ്റ്റേറ്റ് സംസ്ഥാന കമ്മിറ്റി അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടു. ജോസഫ് മുണ്ടശേരി സ്കോളർഷിപ്പിൽ 2.62 കോടിയും വിദേശ സ്കോളർഷിപ്പിൽ 85 ലക്ഷവും എ പി ജെ അബ്ദുൽകലാം സ്കോളർഷിപ്പിൽ 41 ലക്ഷവുമാണ് വെട്ടിക്കുറച്ചത്. മാത്രമല്ല സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ അവശരരും പാർശ്വവൽക്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട വരുമായ ദുർബ്ബല ജനവിഭാഗങ്ങളുടെ ക്ഷേമ പദ്ധതികളിലെ വിവിധതരം സഹായങ്ങൾക്ക് നീക്കിവച്ചിരുന്ന കോടിക്കണക്കിന് രൂപയാണ് വെട്ടിക്കുറച്ചത്. ഭരണാനുമതി നൽകിയ പല പദ്ധതികളും പൂർണ്ണമായും ഒഴിവാക്കിയ സ്ഥിതിയാണുള്ളത്.
സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് സാമ്പത്തീക പ്രതിസന്ധിയില്ലെന്ന് ധനമന്ത്രി ആവർത്തിച്ച് പറയുമ്പോഴും സാധാരണക്കാരായ വിദ്യാർഥികളുടെ സ്കോളർഷിപ്പ് മാത്രം വെട്ടിക്കുറച്ചത് എന്തിനാണ്?. അനാവശ്യ ചെലവുകളും ധൂർത്തും ഒഴിവാക്കി ക്ഷേമപദ്ധതികളും പാവപ്പെട്ട വിദ്യാർഥികളുടെ ആനുകൂല്യങ്ങളും മുൻഗണന നൽകി നടപ്പിലാക്കണമെന്ന് പിസിഐ സ്റ്റേറ്റ് കമ്മിറ്റി പ്രമേയത്തിലൂടെ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
