Getting God’s Word into the Hands of Secret Believers in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia — How many Bibles do you have at home? Maybe you have an app on your device with the Scriptures on it. No matter how many copies of God’s Word you have, it is a blessing to possess even one Bible. So many Christians, especially those of us in the West, take for granted the privilege we have to freely read and study the Bible openly.

For many of our brothers and sisters in Christ who live in Asia, God’s Word is restricted or even illegal. In certain countries, just owning one can lead to violence, imprisonment, or even death.

Many Christians in the West often think that there’s no need to smuggle or distribute Bibles in China or other nations that are restricted and often hostile to the gospel. This is a major mistake. The reality is that multitudes of Christians, particularly those who face persecution in hostile regions and nations, desperately desire and need copies of God’s Word for themselves and their families.

International Christian Concern (ICC) responds to this spiritual need in multiple ways throughout Asia. We work with our in-country staff, partner organizations, and local churches to distribute audio Bibles, digital Bibles on USB drives and MP3 devices, and, of course, physical Bibles in the desired language.

Despite our efforts, the scale of need remains massive. Praise God for Bible Societies, Scripture Unions, strong church networks, and the handful of Christian bookstores operating in most countries in Asia that help source and distribute Bibles. Still, in Asian countries where oppressive Islamic or Communist regimes pressure and persecute Christians and new converts, Bibles must be transported and distributed covertly and sensitively.

In one Muslim nation in Southeast Asia, a local missionary we’ll call “Alex” met with ICC staff and shared his burden to distribute Bibles in high-risk areas of his country to large numbers of former Muslims who were now following Christ.

They needed their own Bibles so they could grow in their faith — even as they face persecution. In these areas, Alex’s life would be in danger if the wrong people caught him distributing Bibles. Knowing this, he had already courageously transported and distributed Bibles in these areas using careful, creative methods. Yet, he still needed more Bibles because so many Muslims were coming to faith in Christ.

Through support from our generous donors, ICC helped Alex lead two Bible distributions. He and his team of dedicated helpers brought God’s Word into two risky areas of this Asian country. For one of these trips, Alex and his team drove more than 12 hours along difficult roads to bring Bibles to a cluster of new Christ followers.

On the other trip, the rainy season caused many obstacles for Alex and his team. The road into this particular high-risk area was flooded enough to cause landslides. In addition to being cautious with their precious cargo of Bibles to avoid detection, the team had to constantly adapt to the conditions they were traveling through.

During the two trips, Alex and his team distributed hundreds of Bibles to former Muslims eager to have their own copy of God’s Word. ICC helped cover the cost of traveling to these small communities of new, secret believers.

Alex asked that people pray for God to speak to these former Muslims through their new Bibles so they can grow in their relationship with Jesus. Our staff would like to thank everyone who has prayed for these dear brothers and sisters of ours and contributed to the gift of God’s Word in their lives. And thank you for your prayers for Alex and his team’s courageous work to get Bibles into the hands of these new believers. As we read our Bibles in relative freedom, they can now read theirs while living under Communism or Islamic regimes.

ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ സമുദായത്തിലെ അംഗങ്ങൾക്കായി ശ്മശാനങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണം വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള എന്തെങ്കിലും നിർദ്ദേശമുണ്ടോ എന്ന് സൂചിപ്പിച്ച് റിപ്പോർട്ട് സമർപ്പിക്കാൻ മേഘാലയ ഹൈക്കോടതി വ്യാഴാഴ്ച സംസ്ഥാനത്തോട് നിർദ്ദേശിച്ചു.

ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ സമുദായത്തിലെ അംഗങ്ങൾക്കായി ശ്മശാനങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണം വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള എന്തെങ്കിലും നിർദ്ദേശം നിലവിലുണ്ടോ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പരിഗണനയിലുണ്ടോ എന്ന് വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്ന ഒരു റിപ്പോർട്ട് സമർപ്പിക്കാൻ സംസ്ഥാനത്തോട് നിർദ്ദേശിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന് ചീഫ് ജസ്റ്റിസ് ഐ പി മുഖർജി, ജസ്റ്റിസ് ഡബ്ല്യു ഡിയെങ്‌ദോ എന്നിവരടങ്ങിയ ബെഞ്ച് പറഞ്ഞു.

സംസ്ഥാനത്തുടനീളമുള്ള ഖാസി, ജയന്തിയ സമുദായങ്ങളിൽപ്പെട്ടവരുടെയും ഹിന്ദു മതം സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നവരുടെയും ശവസംസ്കാരം സംബന്ധിച്ച് സമർപ്പിച്ച ഒരു പൊതുതാൽപര്യ ഹർജി പരിഗണിക്കവേ, ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ വിശ്വാസത്തിലെ വിവിധ വിഭാഗങ്ങൾ അവരുടെ മരിച്ചവരെ ശ്മശാനങ്ങളിൽ സംസ്കരിക്കുന്നതിൽ സമാനമായ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകൾ നേരിടുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന വിവരം ജുഡീഷ്യൽ ശ്രദ്ധയിൽപ്പെടുത്തിയതിനെത്തുടർന്ന്, ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ സമൂഹത്തെയും ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി അതിന്റെ വ്യാപ്തി വിപുലീകരിക്കാൻ ബെഞ്ച് തീരുമാനിച്ചു.

“ഒരു വിഭാഗത്തിന്റെ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലുള്ള ഒരു സെമിത്തേരി മറ്റൊരു വിഭാഗത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട വ്യക്തികളുടെ മൃതദേഹങ്ങൾ അതേ സെമിത്തേരിയിൽ സംസ്‌കരിക്കാൻ അനുവദിക്കുന്നില്ല. ഇതിന്റെ ഫലമായി സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ വിവിധ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ, മരിച്ചവരുടെ അന്ത്യകർമങ്ങൾ നിർവഹിക്കുന്നതിന് ദുഃഖിതരായ കുടുംബാംഗങ്ങൾക്ക് വളരെ ദൂരം സഞ്ചരിക്കേണ്ടിവരുന്നു. സെമിത്തേരി പങ്കിടുന്നതിനും ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ സമൂഹത്തിന് ശ്മശാനങ്ങളായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതിന് പുതിയ സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ അനുവദിക്കുന്നതിനും സമാനമായ ആവശ്യമുണ്ട്,” എന്ന് അതിൽ പറയുന്നു.

ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ സമൂഹം നേരിടുന്ന പ്രശ്നം പരിഹരിക്കുന്നതിനും റിപ്പോർട്ട് സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ജില്ലാ മജിസ്‌ട്രേറ്റുമാരുമായും സമൂഹത്തിലെ അംഗങ്ങളുമായും കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച നടത്താൻ അമിക്കസ് ക്യൂറി എൻ സിങ്കോണിനോട് ബെഞ്ച് നിർദ്ദേശിച്ചിരുന്നു.

ഏപ്രിൽ 8 ന് പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ച മുൻ ഉത്തരവിൽ, സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ വിവിധ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ പുതിയ ശ്മശാനങ്ങൾ നിർമ്മിക്കാനുള്ള സർക്കാരിന്റെ നിർദ്ദേശം ബെഞ്ച് ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചിരുന്നു, പക്ഷേ അതിന് സമയമെടുക്കും.

ഖാസി, ജയന്തിയ സമുദായങ്ങളിലെ അംഗങ്ങൾക്ക് യോഗങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയ ശേഷം, ശ്മശാനത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേക ഭാഗങ്ങൾ ഓരോ സമുദായത്തിനും അനുവദിച്ചുകൊണ്ട്, മരിച്ചവരെ ദഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനായി ശ്മശാനത്തിന്റെ ഒരു നിശ്ചിത ഭാഗത്ത് പ്രത്യേക ചിത സ്ഥാപിക്കാനുള്ള അവകാശം നൽകിക്കൊണ്ട്, അവരുടെ ഹിന്ദു സഹോദരങ്ങളുമായി സൗഹാർദ്ദപരമായി ഒരു ശ്മശാനം പങ്കിടുന്നതിനുള്ള ഒരു മാർഗം കണ്ടെത്തിയതായി അമിക്കസ് ക്യൂറിയും റിപ്പോർട്ട് സമർപ്പിച്ചു.

അതേസമയം, ഖാസി ഹിൽസ് ഓട്ടോണമസ് ഡിസ്ട്രിക്റ്റ് കൗൺസിൽ, ജയന്തിയ ഹിൽസ് ഓട്ടോണമസ് ഡിസ്ട്രിക്റ്റ് കൗൺസിൽ, ഗാരോ ഹിൽസ് ഓട്ടോണമസ് ഡിസ്ട്രിക്റ്റ് കൗൺസിൽ എന്നീ മൂന്ന് സ്വയംഭരണ ജില്ലാ കൗൺസിലുകളെയും കക്ഷി ചേർത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.

The Meghalaya High Court on Thursday directed the State to submit a report indicating if there is any proposal of increasing the number of cemeteries for members of the Christian community.

The bench comprising Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh said, “The State is also directed to file a report to indicate whether it has any existing or contemplated proposal of increasing the number of cemeteries for members of the Christian community.”

The bench while hearing a PIL filed in regards to cremation of persons belonging to Khasi and Jaintia communities as well as those embracing the Hindu religion, throughout the State, decided to enlarge its scope to include the Christian community after taking judicial notice of the information that various denominations of the Christian faith are also facing similar difficulties in burying their dead in cemeteries.
“A cemetery controlled by one denomination is not allowing dead bodies of persons belonging to another denomination to be interred in the same cemetery. The result is that in various regions of the State, a long distance has to be covered by members of the bereaved family to perform the last rites of the dead. There is also similar need for sharing of cemetery and for allocation of new areas to be used as cemeteries for the Christian community,” it said.

The bench had directed the Amicus Curiae N Syngkon to hold meetings with the concerned District Magistrates and members of the community to resolve the problem faced by the Christian community and file a report.

In its previous order dated April 8, the bench had noted the proposal of the government to construct new crematoria in various regions of the State but that would take time.
The Amicus Curiae has also filed a report during the hearing and informed that after holding meetings, a way has been found for members of the Khasi and Jaintia communities to share a crematorium amicably with their Hindu brethren by allocation of separate portions of a crematorium to each of these communities and by grant of right to each community to erect a separate pyre in a designated part of a crematorium for cremating their dead.
Meanwhile, the three autonomous district councils – Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council and Garo Hills Autonomous District Council – have also been made party respondents.

NICOG സൺഡേ സ്കൂൾ സ്റ്റേറ്റ് ഡയറക്ടർ പാസ്റ്റർ ഫിന്നി കുരുവിള സമാപന സന്ദേശം നൽകി. പാസ്റ്റർ സുരേഷ്, ഫേബാ ലിജോ തുടങ്ങിയവർ ഗാനശുശ്രൂഷയ്ക്ക് നേതൃത്വം നൽകി. ജോയിൻ്റ് സെക്രട്ടറി പാസ്റ്റർ സാംകുട്ടി സ്വാഗതവും ട്രഷർ തോമസ് സി ജോൺ നന്ദിയും പറഞ്ഞു. കേരളത്തിലെ എല്ലാ സെന്ററുകളിൽ നിന്നും സെന്റർ സെക്രട്ടറിമാരും റീജിയൻ സെക്രട്ടറിമാരും പങ്കെടുത്തു.
