ഐഎസ്ആര്ഒ മുന് ചെയര്മാന് കസ്തൂരിരംഗന് അന്തരിച്ചു
ഐഎസ്ആര്ഒ മുന് ചെയര്മാനും പ്രമുഖ ബഹരികാശ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനുമായ കൃഷ്ണസ്വാമി കസ്തൂരിരംഗന് (84) അന്തരിച്ചു. ബംഗളൂരുവിലെ വീട്ടില് വച്ചായിരുന്നു അന്ത്യം. 1994 മുതല് 2003 വരെ ഐഎസ്ആര്ഒയുടെ ചെയര്മാന് ആയിരുന്ന കസ്തൂരിരംഗന് ഇന്ത്യന് ബഹിരാകാശ മേഖലയുടെ വളര്ച്ചയ്ക്ക് നിരവധി സംഭാവനകള് നല്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.2003 മുതല് 2009 വരെ രാജ്യസഭ അംഗമായിരുന്നു. പുതിയ ദേശീയ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ നയത്തിന്റെ മുഖ്യശില്പ്പിയാണ്. പശ്ചിമഘട്ട സംരക്ഷണത്തിനുള്ള ഗാഡ്ഗില് കമ്മിറ്റി റിപ്പോര്ട്ട് പഠിക്കാന് നിയോഗിക്കപ്പെട്ട സമിതിയുടെ തലവനായിരുന്നു.
കസ്തൂരിരംഗന് ബഹിരാകാശ കമ്മീഷന്റെ ചെയര്മാനായും ബഹിരാകാശ വകുപ്പില് ഇന്ത്യാ ഗവണ്മെന്റിന്റെ സെക്രട്ടറിയായും 9 വര്ഷം സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഐഎസ്ആര്ഒയില് അദ്ദേഹം ഐഎസ്ആര്ഒ സാറ്റലൈറ്റ് സെന്ററിന്റെ ഡയറക്ടറായും സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. പുതുതലമുറ ബഹിരാകാശ പേടകങ്ങളായ ഇന്ത്യന് നാഷണല് സാറ്റലൈറ്റ് സിസ്റ്റം, ഇന്ത്യന് റിമോട്ട് സെന്സിംഗ് ഉപഗ്രഹങ്ങള്, ശാസ്ത്രീയ ഉപഗ്രഹങ്ങള് എന്നിവയുടെ വികസനത്തിന് മേല്നോട്ടം വഹിച്ചു. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ആദ്യത്തെ രണ്ട് പരീക്ഷണാത്മക ഭൗമ നിരീക്ഷണ ഉപഗ്രഹങ്ങളായ ഭാസ്കര-I, II എന്നിവയുടെ പ്രോജക്ട് ഡയറക്ടറായും അദ്ദേഹം സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ജെഎന്യു ചാന്സലറായും പ്രവര്ത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലായിരുന്നു ഇന്ത്യയുടെ അഭിമാനകരമായ വിക്ഷേപണ വാഹനങ്ങളായ പോളാര് സാറ്റലൈറ്റ് ലോഞ്ച് വെഹിക്കിള് , ജിയോ സിന്ക്രണസ് സാറ്റലൈറ്റ് ലോഞ്ച് വെഹിക്കിള് (ജിഎസ്എല്വി) എന്നിവയുടെ വിജയകരമായ വിക്ഷേപണവും പ്രവര്ത്തനക്ഷമമാക്കലും ഉള്പ്പെടെ നിരവധി പ്രധാന നാഴികക്കല്ലുകള് സ്വന്തമാക്കിയത്. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സംഭാവനകള് മാനിച്ച് രാജ്യം പത്മശ്രീ(1982), പത്മഭൂഷണ്(1992), പത്മ വിഭൂഷണ്(2000) എന്നി പുരസ്കാരങ്ങള് നല്കി ആദരിച്ചു.
1940 ഒക്ടോബര് 24 ന് എറണാകുളത്ത് സി എം കൃഷ്ണസ്വാമി അയ്യരുടെയും വിശാലാക്ഷിയുടെയും മകനായാണ് കസ്തൂരിരംഗന് ജനിച്ചത്. കസ്തൂരിരംഗന്റെ പൂര്വ്വികര് തമിഴ്നാട്ടില് നിന്നുള്ളവരും പിന്നീട് കേരളത്തിന്റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളില് സ്ഥിരതാമസമാക്കിയവരുമാണ്.

Former Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) chairman K Kasturirangan passed away in his Bengaluru residence on Friday.
According to a statement by Isro, Kasturirangan died at 10.43 am. His body will be kept at Raman Research Institute in Bengaluru on Sunday, April 27 between 10 am and noon, for the public to pay respect.
He led the Isro, the Space Commission, and the Department of Space for over nine years. He stepped down from office on August 27, 2003.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered the former Isro chief as a visionary leader and said, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. K. Kasturirangan, a towering figure in India’s scientific and educational journey. His visionary leadership and selfless contribution to the nation will always be remembered.”
He added that Dr. Kasturirangan served Isro with great diligence, steering India’s space programme to new heights, for which we also received global recognition. “His leadership also witnessed ambitious satellite launches and focussed on innovation,” the prime minister said.
Known as the man behind the education reforms, Kasturirangan served as chancellor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University and chairman of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission. He also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2003 to 2009 and as a member of the then Planning Commission of India.
He also served as Director of the Isro Satellite Centre, where he was involved in developing INSAT-2, IRS-1A/1B, and scientific satellites.
He was the Project Director for India’s first earth observation satellites, Bhaskara I and II, and oversaw major milestones like the PSLV and GSLV launches. He has been conferred Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan for his contributions.
An astrophysicist by training, his research interests included high-energy X-ray and gamma ray astronomy. He made significant contributions to studies on cosmic X-ray sources, celestial gamma rays, and their effects on Earth’s atmosphere.

In Keralam, Aroma Chundan has won the 72nd Nehru Trophy Boat Race in a nail-biting finish at Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha. In one of the closest contests in the history of the legendary water festival, Aromal Chundan crossed the finish line in 4 minutes, 23 seconds, and 328 milliseconds to secure the coveted trophy.
Nadubhagom Chundan finished a close second with a time of 4 minutes, 23 seconds, and 448 milliseconds, while Veeyapuram Chundan took third place, clocking in at 4 minutes, 23 seconds, and 770 milliseconds.
The high-octane race was the highlight of a grand event that featured 71 boats, including 22 traditional snake boats, competing across various categories. Church leaders have welcomed a ruling by a provincial top court in southern India allowing a Christian woman to seek dissolution of her marriage in a family court where she currently resides after moving out of her matrimonial home.
The Kerala High Court’s Aug. 19 ruling came on an appeal filed by a Christian woman seeking legal separation from her husband due to domestic violence.
The woman, who resides at her parental home in Kerala state’s Wayanad district, had challenged a family court order directing her to file her application in Kasargod district, where her estranged husband and his family live.

The British-era Indian Divorce Act of 1869, which governs judicial separation and marriage dissolution, among other things, for Christians in India, makes it mandatory for women to approach a family court in the place where “the marriage was solemnized, or the husband and wife reside or last resided together.”
In her appeal to the High Court, the Christian woman argued that this restriction resulted “in serious prejudice to Christian women who intend to file for divorce.”
The woman had earlier challenged the family court order before a single bench of the Kerala High Court on the grounds that she was not in a position “to travel long distances, in protracted litigations in a hostile jurisdiction.”
She pointed out that women were allowed to approach family courts where they resided under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, as well as the Special Marriage Act, 1954, which enables marriages between individuals of any religion, caste, or nationality, but not under the law governing Christian marriages.
The single-judge bench, in a June 30 ruling, agreed with her contentions but refused to grant her relief, holding that amending the law was the only solution and leaving it to the Indian Parliament to decide.
The judge, however, directed that the order be sent to the federal government, recommending it to amend the 1869 law.
The High Court’s division bench of Justices A K Jayasankaran Nambiar and Preeta A K, whom she approached later, allowed her appeal.
It ruled that she could file her application before a family court “having jurisdiction over the place where she is currently residing, even if that place is different from where the marriage was solemnized or where the couple last lived together.”
Church leaders hailed this Aug. 19 ruling as a “landmark decision” based on “a wise interpretation of a contentious clause.”
Father Ebigin Arackal, secretary to the Commission for Canon Law of the Kerala Region Latin Catholic Bishops’ Council, said, “We are glad that the top court, through its wise interpretation of a contentious clause, has ended decades-old discrimination against Christian women.”
Aleykutty P T, a lawyer in Kerala’s Idukki district, said Christian women were often forced to travel to places where their husbands were based, which made them insecure and sometimes even posed a threat to their lives.
“Now with this order, they can obviously choose a place where it’s safer and they get support,” she told UCA News on Aug. 20.
Govind Yadav, a lawyer at the Supreme Court in New Delhi, said this order for Kerala can become a precedent for other states to follow.
“But as long as the federal government fails to amend the colonial-era law, this discrimination against Christian women will continue,” he added.
Christians make up 2.3 percent of India’s more than 1.4 billion people; about 80 percent of whom are Hindus.
