Boy discovers ancient gemstone at site linked to Jesus’ ministry in Galilee
A region in the state of Israel known as the biblical location where Jesus walked on water has yielded a rare ancient gemstone thought to be more than 1,500 years old.
A 12-year-old sixth-grade student unearthed the find during a recent educational dig led by Israel Nature and Parks Authority along with Ariel University, according to Times of Israel.
Believed to date as far back as the first century AD, the deep blue agate gemstone was likely worn as jewelry by a wealthy individual, according to the report.
Adam Horowitz, the boy who made the discovery, told the Times of Israel he spotted the gemstone while digging with a pickaxe after nearly three days of excavation at the site, telling the news outlet that he “suddenly saw something blue, round and special.”
Horowitz added, “I picked it up and showed it to the archaeologist. When I realized it was something rare, I felt really happy and proud.”
Achia Cohen Tavor of Ariel University shared an image of the gemstone — which appeared roughly the size of a lithium battery — captured by an Israeli newspaper.
Located 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) north of the Sea of Galilee, Korazim — also referred to as “Chorazin” — was the site of a Jewish village for about a millennium, starting from the end of the Second Temple Period around 2,000 years ago until the 11th century AD.
Overlooking the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus walked on water in Matthew 14, the Korazim archaeological site includes remains from a synagogue and draws crowds of tourists and Christian pilgrims to the New Testament location.
Mentioned in both Matthew and Luke, the town was notorious for being one of the cities over which Jesus pronounced judgement for not receiving His teaching in Matthew 11:20-21: “Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. ‘Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.'”
According to Times of Israel, the finding is the latest rare artifact to be found by an aspiring archaeologist after a young girl found a 1,500-year-old bronze coin on the ground during a 2021 excavation trip at Korazim National Park.
The student excavations at the historic site are part of a park initiative called Digging Through Time, in which families and groups can participate in an expert-led dig where visitors learn how findings are identified and get the opportunity to sift through the same area where Jesus is believed to have once walked.

Pastor Arrested for Praying and Protesting Outside Chinese Embassy in DC
An American pastor has been arrested and charged with a crime for praying and peacefully demonstrating on a sidewalk in front of the Chinese embassy in our nation’s capital. His case is now advancing in the courts after a recent arraignment.
The American Center for Law and Justice, which is defending Rev. Patrick Mahoney in the case, contends that the U.S. government acquiesced to demands from China’s communist regime to arrest the pastor.
Shortly after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the U.S., Mahoney was protesting Chinese human rights abuses while standing on American soil, on the public sidewalk outside the embassy.
Mahoney, who is director of the Christian Defense Coalition, has reportedly protested more than 300 times at the exact same spot over the years, and Chinese officials have complained in the past. In 2023, the Secret Service nearly arrested him for protesting there, but the ACLJ intervened and the government backed down.
That’s not what happened on September 28. “Sadly, this time the Chinese delegation was able to persuade the Secret Service to do its bidding and arrest this American pastor right here on American soil. The criminal charge: unlawful entry, as if he were breaking and entering. It’s ridiculous,” Jordan Sekulow of the ACLJ stated.
Not only was Mahoney arrested, but he’s now facing a trial. His arraignment was held last week, on October 21.
He posted on social media, “My own government arrested me for demonstrating and praying on a public sidewalk. Jailed me. Criminally charged me. Ordered me to stay off the public sidewalk and are now criminally prosecuting me in court.”
Mahoney pleaded not guilty, but he reports the DC court issued an order telling him he cannot go back on the public sidewalk near the embassy until the case is decided. The criminal charges against him are moving forward, and his next court date will be November 20.
He’s vowing to keep fighting for his First Amendment rights. “We will never be silenced,” he said.

A new report from the Pew Research Center challenges recent claims of a religious revival in the United States. The study found that religious practice has remained relatively stable since 2020, despite mixed trends among young adults.
According to the report, 34% of U.S. adults attended religious services in person in the past month, while 45% either attended or watched services online. These figures are the highest since Pew began tracking them in July 2020. However, the report highlights mixed signals among young adults, particularly those born between 2004 and 2008, who reported relatively high religious attendance. In contrast, those born between 2000 and 2003 were among the least religious Americans.
The report also found that the youngest men reported greater religious observance than the youngest women, a trend not previously seen in Pew’s surveys. However, researchers cautioned that it remains unclear whether this trend will continue.
EWTN News noted that the youngest Republicans attend religious services at higher rates than older Republicans, but younger Democrats also reported higher levels of attendance than older ones. This suggests that the trend is not limited to one political group.
The Religion Unplugged report emphasized that while the youngest adults show high rates of attendance, their overall religious commitment remains less distinctive. The findings suggest that the notion of a broad-based religious revival among young Americans remains unproven.
