US Athletes Point to Christ as the Strength Behind Their Success: ‘He’s Glorified in That’
The U.S. men’s gymnastics team earned America an Olympic bronze medal in men’s gymnastics this week, ending a 16-year drought last night in Paris.
Gymnast Brody Malone
The big moment included a personal comeback from gymnast Brody Malone. He delivered strong performances in every competition on Monday, recovering from a disastrous opening night where he had several falls.
Malone has been outspoken about his Christian faith and how it has helped him overcome tremendous odds, including competing after a devastating knee injury. He had to learn to walk again after that injury, and he’s one of many U.S. athletes who point to their faith as the strength behind their success.
For almost 40 years, Sports Spectrum has covered athletes and other sports figures from a Christian perspective. Featuring daily web updates and a magazine, reporters are busy highlighting Olympic athletes who, win or lose, are sure to give God the glory.
Sports Spectrum’s Jon Ackerman told us, “There’s a good number of athletes who will be professing faith in Christ that we can be watching for.”
During an appearance on CBN’s PrayerLink, Ackerman highlighted a few of these athletes, including Malone.
“He’s the only male on the U.S. team that will have Olympic experience when they get to Paris,” Ackerman told us before the games. “When he’s asked about his journey, especially his comeback, he’s quick to just say, ‘I give all the glory to God first and foremost. I have to give glory to God. He’s the only reason I’m standing here.’ And so he’s quick to praise his Lord and Savior when he gets any of the glory.”
Heptathlete Anna Hall
On the track and field side of the games, Anna Hall is making her Olympic debut in the women’s heptathlon despite suffering a broken foot in 2021 and knee surgery earlier this year.
“Obviously it wasn’t how I wanted to start an Olympic year and I was super bummed to miss World indoors – it’s like I had that written on my mirror for so long and I was ready to do it,” Hall said.
Ackerman explained, “Last year at the 2023 World Championship, she took second and so she’s going to be right there competing for a medal, possibly a gold medal… She was raised in a Christian home, went to a Christian high school, but really made her faith her own when she was out on her own.”
Track Star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone
One of the most anticipated races is the women’s 400-meter hurdles featuring reigning Olympic champ Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.
“She’s the world record holder. She lowered her world record again in the 400-meter hurdles at trials. She’s lowered that world record a number of times, but she lowered it again at trials and quickly, right? Right after the race, she’s praised her Lord and Savior, wanted to give glory to Him, and said anything is possible through Christ,” Ackerman said. “She wants to give Gloria to God and amen. Whatever results happen, it’s up to Him.”
McLaughlin-Levrone said, “It’s far beyond gold. It’s achieving salvation which is already mine in Jesus but obviously running the race of the Christian life well even on the track. Before races, that’s what I’m reminding myself of – setting my mind on things above – knowing the Lord is looking down on my life right now and me wanting to honor that, and He’s glorified in that.”

Dodgers player says ‘God is absolutely good’ after World Series win
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Blake Treinen gave glory to God after his team won the World Series against the New York Yankees Wednesday night.
In an interview with the MLB Network after the Dodgers defeated the Yankees to become the 2024 World Series champions, Treinen told reporter Robert Flores that he felt “overwhelming joy” after the victory. “God is absolutely good. I got to give a shout out to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for this moment,” he added.
When asked “who was the first person you thought of on the final out,” Treinen responded: “God.”
Treinen’s remarks followed the Dodgers’ 7-6 victory over the Yankees in the fifth game of the World Series. The Dodgers won four games against the Yankees in the World Series, thereby enabling them to clinch the coveted title.
Although Treinen has a limited social media presence compared to many professional athletes, his Christian faith still features prominently on his socials. The name associated with his X profile is “BlakeTreinen” accompanied by a picture of a cross and the U.S. flag. The biography on his X account proclaims: “I love Jesus Christ he is my savior.”
Last year, Treinen cited his Christian faith when speaking out against the Dodgers’ decision to recognize the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence — a group of men in drag who dress up as Catholic nuns — as part of the team’s celebration of LGBT pride month.
In a statement shared by prominent worship artist Sean Feucht, Treinen expressed disappointment that his team was honoring the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence because “many of their performances are blasphemous, and their work only displays hate and mockery of Catholics and the Christian faith.”
Treinen suggested that he was willing to accept whatever consequences might have come with speaking out: “I understand that playing baseball is a privilege, and not a right. My convictions with Jesus Christ will always come first.”
“Inviting the [Sisters] of Perpetual Indulgence to perform disenfranchises a large community and promotes hate of Christians and people of faith,” he added. “This single event alienates the fans and supporters of the Dodgers, Major League Baseball, and professional sports.”
After asserting that “Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins,” Treinen shared Bible verses that informed his opinion on the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, including Galatians 6:7. The Bible passage declares: “do not be deceived, God cannot be mocked; a man reaps what he sows.”
“This group openly mocks Jesus Christ, the cornerstone of my faith, and I want to make it clear that I do not agree with nor support the decision of the [Dodgers] to ‘honor’ the [Sisters] of Perpetual Indulgence,” he concluded. Treinen also quoted Joshua 24:15 to make it clear where his loyalties lie: “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
In 2016, before he joined the Dodgers, Treinen participated in Faith and Family Night at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. He was one of several players who shared their testimonies in front of 2,000 people.

Tim Tebow’s Bible-Inspired Mission to Eradicate ‘Horrible Evil,’ Save Lives
Ex-NFL star Tim Tebow is on a faith-based mission to exterminate the evils of human trafficking, appealing to the Gospel to make his case.
Speaking recently about the Tim Tebow Foundation’s UnKNOWN and UnFINISHED campaign, an effort to rescue children from the bowels of human trafficking and abuse, the former quarterback rooted his belief in the value of every human life in Scripture.
“King Jesus, who has infinite value and worth, went to the cross and was a ransom for me, and was a ransom for you, and it was a ransom for every single person — and gave his life in exchange for us,” Tebow said. “That means that we have infinite value and worth.”
He continued, “He paid that price for us.”
Tebow said it’s essential to understand that Jesus’ sacrifice for mankind’s sins — a hallmark of the Christian faith — means there is “value and worth” in every human life.
He believes this creates a responsibility and calls for Christians to step up and defend those in desperate need.
“We have to do everything we can to protect them,” he said of human trafficking victims. “To bring them out of this horrible evil and put them in a position where they can flourish, knowing their worth, and their value, and experiencing the faith, hope, and love that so many desperately deserve.”
As CBN News previously reported, Tebow’s UnKNOWN and UnFINISHED campaign builds upon last year’s initiative known as the Unknown campaign, an endeavor named for the 50,000 boys and girls whose abuse has been seen by law enforcement via videos and images but who have not yet been identified.
Tebow said his goal is to help “through technology, through legislation, through law enforcement, through operations” to identify and rescue these children. Rather than move on to a new campaign this year, he and his foundation were moved to continue working to find these children.
“We call it Unknown and Unfinished, because we’ve got to get to as many of these boys and girls as possible,” Tebow said. “And when we look at the scale, just so people can understand it … within the last 12 months, there’s been over 500,000 unique IP addresses that have downloaded or shared images or videos of children under the age of 12 being abused.”
