Pastor arrested for ‘illegal worship’ advocates for Evangelical churches forcibly closed in Algeria

Published

on

Algerian Pastor Youssef Ourahmane, arrested and sentenced for leading worship services in his home country, recently shared his experience, highlighting the ongoing repression of religious minorities in Algeria.

At an event hosted by the legal group ADF International, Youssef, a Christian convert and leader in the Protestant Church of Algeria, advocated for religious freedom and the reopening of Evangelical churches forcibly closed by Algerian authorities.

He recounted his arrest and conviction for the so-called crime of “illegal worship.”

“We have had a lot of opposition,” he told the audience. “By 2019, most of the Evangelical churches in our country had been shut down. When the churches were closed, a lot of the Christians felt that something was gone in their Christian faith because the building had been part of their identity.”

Born into a Muslim family, Youssef converted to Christianity as a student and has been leading congregations for over 30 years. Despite legal challenges and personal risk, he remains steadfast in his faith.

When asked why he is willing to face imprisonment, he responded, “God knows the number of my hairs on my head, and none fall without His will. We have to accept God’s will, and God’s sovereignty. I try my best, by His grace, to be a good testimony to others.”

On July 2, 2023, Pastor Youssef was sentenced to two years in prison and fined 100,000 Algerian dinars ($750) for leading the Emmanuel Church in Algeria. Although his prison sentence was reduced to one year in November 2023, the Court of Appeal in Tizi Ouzou upheld his conviction in May and added an additional six months of suspended prison time.

“Despite their small numbers, Algeria has systematically been working to prevent the Evangelical community from being able to simply worship together,” said Kelsey Zorzi, director of advocacy for global religious freedom for ADF International, during the event. “Pastor Youssef’s case is one of roughly 50 spurious cases against Christians in the past few years. His advocacy throughout the years on behalf of the entire Evangelical church in Algeria, even in the face of potential imprisonment, is an inspiration.”

ADF International says it’s collaborating with other non-governmental organizations to support Youssef, aiming to raise his case with government officials from over 40 countries. “The United States and the international community must take a strong stand against the unlawful church closures and unjustified arrests and imprisonments of pastors,” Zorzi said.

Algeria, a nation where 99% of the nearly 43 million population identify as Sunni Muslim, has seen increased restrictions on religious minorities. The government enforces laws that limit religious freedom and expression, including blasphemy and anti-proselytism statutes targeting Christians and other minorities, according to ADF International.

Since 2019, authorities have forcibly closed 43 churches affiliated with the Église Protestante d’Algérie (EPA), leaving only one open, according to ADF International. Security police, acting on orders from the Ministry of Interior, have cited alleged “health and safety” code violations to justify locking church doors and declaring worship inside illegal.

“In one case, they physically beat a pastor in front of his young child because he was peacefully protesting the closure of his church,” ADF International reported.

Youssef has also faced baseless criminal prosecutions since 2008 for his peaceful Christian activities. He is among 50 Christians convicted under vague offenses such as “shaking the faith” of Muslims, illegal worship or embezzling tithing donations.

“In the 1970s, the government gave out licenses to churches which were largely full of expats,” Youssef explained at the event. “Today, the government is concerned that our churches are almost entirely filled with large numbers of Algerian converts.”

The crackdown has also affected small house congregations.

According to 21 Wilberforce, “The government mandates they can only have 10 people per gathering, forcing many house churches to operate underground. Church leaders who continue to hold services in Algeria are threatened, and several have been arrested and prosecuted by the government.”

Open Doors International reported that only four out of 47 churches under the Evangelical Protestant Church of Algeria remained open at the end of 2023.

“Christianity’s long history in Algeria is threatened,” stated 21 Wilberforce. “As the government closes churches and slows down the registration process for religious groups, Algerian Christians are finding life increasingly difficult.”

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has recommended that Algeria be included on the U.S. Department of State’s “Special Watch List” for severe violations of religious freedom. In its 2024 Annual Report, USCIRF highlighted the escalating repression of religious minorities in Algeria.

Violations of the rights of religious minorities contravene both international and domestic law, according to ADF International.

Baptists evangelize at Mississippi State Fair, 373 fairgoers make decisions for Christ

Published

on

Baptists engaged in thousands of faith conversations with fairgoers at this year’s Mississippi State Fair that culminated in 373 decisions being made for Christ.

Nearly 200 volunteers with the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board attended the multiday state fair earlier this month, with the ministry having been at the event every year since 2021.

“We had 195 volunteers to participate in the State Fair Ministry,” said MBCB spokesperson Linda Burris to The Christian Post. “We made a record of 2,824 Gospel conversations with 373 of those praying to receive Christ.”

Burris also told CP that while they probably had “about the same number of Gospel conversations each year, they have seen the number of professions of faith increase annually.

Regarding follow-up with those who made decisions, Burris said the state convention office gives each new believer a Gospel tract, a letter, and a booklet on discipleship.

“Our volunteers are assigned a number that they put on the cards of those they share with. A copy of the cards of the ones who received Christ are mailed back to the volunteer who shared with them. They are then able to make contact with them,” she continued.

“We sort the cards according to city and town and mail the information to a local pastor so that they can be contacted by a church in their area.”

Burris described the overall state fair experience as “exciting and scary at the same time,” believing that it was “a confidence builder for those who haven’t shared their faith much.”

“They discover that they can do it and it’s not that hard,” she told CP. “It is rewarding to hear the stories of other believers at the fair and to share with someone hungry to hear the good news of hope.”

In recent years, several mass gatherings have been held in places like college campuses and the Pacific Coast where large numbers of people publicly professed their Christian faith.

During the summer, for example, Harvest Ministries oversaw the second annual Jesus Revolution Baptism at Pirate’s Cove Beach in California, in which around 2,000 baptisms took place.

In late August, a Gospel outreach gathering was held at the Corpus Christi campus of Texas A&M University where around 1,500 students attended and more than 60 were baptized.

New Life Young Adults Pastor Tarik Whitmore, who helped oversee the Texas A&M event, told CP in an earlier interview that event organizers witnessed “many touched by the power of God.”

“The night continued with students and young adults sharing testimonies in real-time of salvation, healing, deliverance, and being filled with the Spirit,” Whitmore recounted.

“The night concluded with a commissioning of those who wanted God to use them on their college campus — All declaring, ‘Here I am. Send me!’”

Pastor lauds students fighting cross necklace ban as Christian symbol deemed ‘offensive’

Published

Students in Victoria, Australia, are challenging their Methodist school’s ban on cross necklaces deemed “offensive,” receiving praise from a local pastor.

At Methodist Ladies’ College, a prestigious girls’ school in Melbourne, students have been asked to remove cross necklaces because they might offend others, the Herald Sun reported.

“My friend was wearing a cross and there was another girl in our class who said she found the cross really offensive and so the teacher told her to take it off,” an anonymous student was quoted as saying. “My friend’s parents, who are very religious, tried to get answers from the school and were told ‘it’s not a good look for the school.’”

MLC was founded by the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1882 and charges around $39,000 a year in fees for Year 12 students, Premier Christian News noted, adding that the school has a strict dress code policy regarding makeup, jewelry and long hair.

“This is supposed to be a religious school but they are listening to minority opinion rather than mainstream religious students,” another student was quoted as saying.

Pastor Murray Campbell criticized the school’s actions in a blog post, noted Sky News.

Well done to the girls who are standing up to the bullish behavior of the school. Well done to the students who are defending their fellow students, whether they are of Christian faith or not,” the pastor was quoted as saying.

Stephen Chavura, a history lecturer and author, told Sky News, “We know now that the word inclusivity means exclusivity, and the word diversity means uniformity, but I want to praise these girls for standing up to woke bullying.”

He encouraged students, stating, “Wear your crosses, if you have a cross turn up to school and wear it, send a message to other students and teachers and to the school in general, that this is a Christian school, it is not a Marxist woke school.”

According to reports, while some students were asked to remove crosses, others were allegedly allowed to wear furry ears, tails and rainbow-themed items.

In response to the allegations, Principal Julia Shea stated, “We aim to apply a consistent uniform policy that prohibits visible jewelry. We do not have any students attending school wearing furry tails and ears.”

She added, “This policy applies equally to all students and is not related to religion or any individual’s beliefs. It ensures that every student adheres to the same standard of presentation, fostering unity within our diverse community.”

MLC acknowledges that many students are there for the education rather than religious reasons.

My Christian News noted that at $39,000 per year, the school’s client base is the elite of Melbourne, “and not Christian parents, and hence not wanting to offend the majority of parents and their children who are there for the education, not religious reasons.”
