A Christian couple in India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh, who were sentenced to five years in prison for alleged attempted conversion, have been released on bail. Christians maintain that the evidence presented in court did not substantiate the charges of conversion, but their acquittal is expected to take a long time.

The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court granted them bail last month, and they exited prison weeks later, reported the U.K.-based group Christian Solidarity Worldwide.

Authorities convicted Jose and Sheeja Pappachan on Jan. 22 under Uttar Pradesh’s “anti-conversion” law, the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, and imposed fines of 25,000 rupees (roughly $300) each.

During the trial, officials claimed the couple orchestrated large-scale inducements to convert low-caste Dalit residents, specifically during an event on Christmas Day in 2022. The police relied on eyewitness accounts and a complaint filed by a state legislator from the Bharatiya Janata Party. Prosecutors also invoked sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

In defense statements presented in court, Jose and Sheeja said they only promoted education, organized community meals and distributed Bibles without compelling anyone to change their beliefs. They also denied luring participants with financial benefits. The couple maintained that they merely urged participants to avoid alcohol and to engage in children’s education.

“While CSW is glad that Jose and Sheeja Pappachan were granted bail so soon after their conviction, the couple will have to continue to fight for their acquittal,” said CSW President Mervyn Thomas. “In many cases, this process can take years due to the poorly defined nature of these laws, often prolonging the suffering of those who have been falsely accused,” he explained.

CSW called on authorities in Uttar Pradesh “to take swift action to process the cases of all those currently facing charges of forced conversion, and ultimately to acquit them in recognition of the unconstitutionality of the anti-conversion law.”

Despite the constitutional protection of freedom of religion, 12 Indian states have enacted anti-conversion statutes, officially aimed at preventing forced conversions. However, these laws broadly define prohibited activities, placing nearly all forms of outreach or evangelism under legal scrutiny.

Currently, at least 80 Christians remain in prison in Uttar Pradesh alone on similar charges.

The couple represents one of the first reported instances where individuals were convicted and imprisoned under this legislation for alleged coercive conversion.

A.C. Michael, a national coordinator for the Delhi-based group United Christian Forum, has monitored multiple cases involving Christians accused of forcibly converting others. He told UCA News previously: “The conviction for a suspected attempt to convert will not stand the scrutiny of a higher court.”

The Uttar Pradesh anti-conversion law, amended in 2024, allows third-party involvement in suspected conversion matters, whereas earlier provisions restricted complaints to alleged victims or their immediate relatives.

രാവിലെ 9.30ക്കാണ് എസ്എസ്എൽസി പരീക്ഷ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. രണ്ടാം വർഷ ഹയർസെക്കണ്ടറി പരീക്ഷ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത് ഉച്ചക്ക് ഒന്നര മുതലാണ്. സുഗമമമായ പരീക്ഷ നടത്തിപ്പിനും, ചോദ്യപേപ്പറുകളും, ഉത്തരക്കടലാസുകളും സുരക്ഷിതമായി സൂക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനും സംവിധാനം ഒരുക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ വകുപ്പ് അറിയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. കൊടുംചൂടിൽ തളരാതിരിക്കാൻ കുടിവെള്ളം എല്ലാ പരീക്ഷാഹാളിലുമുണ്ടാകും.

സംസ്ഥാനത്തൊട്ടാകെ 2964 കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലും, ലക്ഷദ്വീപിലെ 9 കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലും, ഗൾഫ് മേഖലയിലെ 7 കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലുമായി 4,27,021 വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ റഗുലർ വിഭാഗത്തിൽ പരീക്ഷ എഴുതുന്നുണ്ട്. മാർച്ച് 26-നാണ് പരീക്ഷകൾ അവസാനിക്കുക. പൊതുപരീക്ഷയുടെ സുഗമമായ നടത്തിപ്പിനുള്ള ഒരുക്കങ്ങളും ക്രമീകരണങ്ങളും നടത്തുന്നതിനുള്ള നിർദ്ദേശം മേഖലാ അസിസ്റ്റൻറ് ഡയറക്ടർമാർക്കും സ്കൂൾ പ്രിൻസിപ്പൽമാർക്കും ഇതിനോടകം നൽകിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ഇത്തവണ ഗൾഫ് മേഖലയിൽ 682 കുട്ടികളും, ലക്ഷദ്വീപ് മേഖലയിൽ 447 കുട്ടികളും പരീക്ഷ എഴുതുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇവർക്ക് പുറമേ ഓൾഡ് സ്കീമിൽ (പി.സി.ഒ) 8 കുട്ടികളും പരീക്ഷ എഴുതുന്നുണ്ട്. മലപ്പുറം റവന്യൂ ജില്ലയിലെ മലപ്പുറം വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ജില്ലയിലാണ് ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ കുട്ടികൾ പരീക്ഷ എഴുതുന്നത് (28,358). ഏറ്റവും കുറച്ച് കുട്ടികൾ പരീക്ഷ എഴുതുന്നത് ആലപ്പുഴ റവന്യൂ ജില്ലയിലെ കുട്ടനാട് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ജില്ലയിലാണ് (1,893). ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ കുട്ടികൾ പരീക്ഷ എഴുതുന്ന കേന്ദ്രം തിരൂരങ്ങാടി വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ജില്ലയിലെ പി.കെ.എം.എം.എച്ച്.എസ്.എസ് എടരിക്കോട്. കുട്ടികളുടെ എണ്ണം 2,017. ഏറ്റവും കുറച്ച് വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ പരീക്ഷ എഴുതുന്നത് ഗവ. സംസ്കൃതം എച്ച്.എസ് ഫോർട്ട് (തിരുവനന്തപുരം വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ജില്ല) എന്ന കേന്ദ്രത്തിലാണ് (ഒരു കുട്ടി).

റ്റി.എച്ച്.എസ്.എൽ.സി. വിഭാഗത്തിൽ ഇത്തവണ 48 പരീക്ഷാ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലായി 3,057 കുട്ടികളാണ് പരീക്ഷ എഴുതുന്നത്. (ആൺകുട്ടികൾ – 2,815, പെൺകുട്ടികൾ – 242). എ.എച്ച്.എസ്.എൽ.സി വിഭാഗത്തിൽ ഒരു പരീക്ഷാ കേന്ദ്രമാണ് ഉളളത്. ആർട്ട് ഹയർ സെക്കണ്ടറി സ്കൂൾ കലാമണ്ഡലം, ചെറുതുരുത്തി. കുട്ടികളുടെ എണ്ണം 65. എസ്.എസ്.എൽ.സി (ഹിയറിംഗ് ഇംപയേർഡ്) വിഭാഗത്തിൽ 29 പരീക്ഷാ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലായി 206 കുട്ടികൾ. റ്റി.എച്ച്.എസ്.എൽ.സി (ഹിയറിംഗ് ഇംപയേർഡ്) വിഭാഗത്തിൽ 1 പരീക്ഷാ കേന്ദ്രമാണുളളത്. കുട്ടികളുടെ എണ്ണം12.

സംസ്ഥാനത്തൊട്ടാകെ 72 കേന്ദ്രീകൃത മൂല്യനിർണ്ണയ ക്യാമ്പുകളിലായി ഉത്തരക്കടലാസ്സുകളുടെ മൂല്യനിർണ്ണയം ഏപ്രിൽ 3 മുതൽ 26 വരെ രണ്ട് ഘട്ടങ്ങളിലായാണ് നടത്തുന്നത്. ആദ്യഘട്ടം ഏപ്രിൽ 3-ാം തീയതി ആരംഭിച്ച് ഏപ്രിൽ 11-ാം തീയതി അവസാനിക്കും (8 ദിവസം). രണ്ടാം ഘട്ടം ഏപ്രിൽ 21-ാം തീയതി ആരംഭിച്ച് ഏപ്രിൽ 26-ാം തീയതി അവസാനിക്കുന്നു (6 ദിവസം). മൂല്യനിർണ്ണയ ക്യാമ്പുകളിലേക്കുളള അഡീഷണൽ ചീഫ് എക്സാമിനർമാരുടെയും, അസിസ്റ്റൻറ് എക്സാമിനർമാരുടെയും നിയമന ഉത്തരവുകൾ മാർച്ച് 10 മുതൽ പരീക്ഷാഭവൻറെ വെബ്സൈറ്റിൽ ലഭ്യമാകും. കേന്ദ്രീകൃത മൂല്യനിർണ്ണയത്തിന് മുന്നോടിയായുളള സ്കീം ഫൈനലൈസേഷൻ ക്യാമ്പുകൾ മാർച്ച് മൂന്നാംവാരത്തിൽ ആരംഭിയ്ക്കും.

2025 ലെ ഒന്നും രണ്ടും വർഷ ഹയർ സെക്കന്ററി പരീക്ഷകളുടെ വിജ്ഞാപനം 01/11/2024 ന് പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതാണ്. 2025 ലെ ഹയർ സെക്കന്ററി ഒന്നാം വർഷ പൊതു പരീക്ഷകൾ മാർച്ച് 6 മുതൽ 29 വരെയുള്ള ഒൻപതു ദിവസങ്ങളിലായാണ് നിശ്ചയിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്. ഒന്നാം വർഷ ഹയർ സെക്കന്ററി പരീക്ഷയോടൊപ്പം ഒരേ ടൈംടേബിളിലാണ് 2024ൽ നടന്ന ഒന്നാം വർഷ ഹയർ സെക്കന്ററി പരീക്ഷയുടെ ഇംപ്രൂവ്മെൻറ്/സപ്ലിമെൻററി പരീക്ഷകൾ നടത്തുന്നത്. ഹയർ സെക്കന്ററി രണ്ടാം വർഷ പരീക്ഷകൾ മാർച്ച് 3 മുതൽ 26 വരെയുള്ള ഒൻപതു ദിവസങ്ങളിലായാണ് നിശ്ചയിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്. ഉച്ചക്ക് ശേഷമാണ് ഹയർസെക്കൻററി പരീക്ഷകൾ ക്രമീകരിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്.

2025 ലെ ഹയർ സെക്കന്ററി ഒന്നും രണ്ടും വർഷ മാതൃകാ പരീക്ഷകൾ 17/02/2025 ന് ആരംഭിച്ച് 21/02/2025ന് പൂർത്തീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 2025ലെ ഹയർ സെക്കന്ററി ഒന്നും രണ്ടും വർഷ പരീക്ഷകളുടെ ഫീസ് ഒടുക്കേണ്ട തീയതി ഫൈനില്ലാതെ 18/11/2024 വരെയും സൂപ്പർ ഫൈനോടുകൂടെ ഒടുക്കേണ്ട തീയതി 28/11/2024 വരെയായിരുന്നത് 31/12/2024 വരെയും ആയി ദീർഘിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു.

ഹയർ സെക്കന്ററി പരീക്ഷയുടെ ഉത്തരക്കടലാസ്സ് മൂല്യനിർണ്ണയം നടത്താനായി 89 ക്യാമ്പുകൾ (സിംഗിൽ വാല്വേഷൻക്യാമ്പ്-63,ഡബിൾ വാല്വേഷൻ ക്യാമ്പ് -26) സജ്ജീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഹയർ സെക്കന്ററി പരീക്ഷയുടെ ഉത്തരക്കടലാസ്സ് മൂല്യനിർണ്ണയം നടത്താനായി സ്കീം ഫൈനലൈസേഷൻ 14/03/2025, 01/04/2025 എന്നീ രണ്ടു ദിവസങ്ങളിലായി നടക്കുന്നതാണ്. ഹയർ സെക്കന്ററി പരീക്ഷയുടെ ഉത്തരക്കടലാസ്സ് മൂല്യനിർണ്ണയം നിശ്ചയിച്ചിരിയ്ക്കുന്ന 2025 ഏപ്രിൽ 03 മുതൽ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നതാണ്. 2025 ലെ ഒന്നും രണ്ടും വർഷ ഹയർ സെക്കന്ററി പരീക്ഷകളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ പൂർത്തിയായിട്ടുണ്ട്.

വൊക്കേഷണൽ ഹയർ സെക്കൻററി വിഭാഗം

ഹയർ സെക്കൻററി (വൊക്കേഷണൽ) വിഭാഗം സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ 389 വൊക്കേഷണൽ ഹയർ സെക്കൻററി സ്കൂളുകളിലായി 2025 മാർച്ചിൽ നടത്തുന്ന ഒന്നാംവർഷ റഗുലർ/ഇംപ്രൂവ്മെൻറ് പൊതുപരീക്ഷ മാർച്ച് 6 മുതൽ ആരംഭിച്ച് 29 മാർച്ചിന് അവസാനിക്കുന്നതും രണ്ടാംവർഷ പൊതുപരീക്ഷ മാർച്ച് 3 ന് ആരംഭിച്ച് മാർച്ച് 26 ന് അവസാനിക്കുന്നതുമാണ്. ഒന്നാംവർഷ വൊക്കേഷണൽ പ്രായോഗിക പരീക്ഷകൾ 2025 ഫെബ്രുവരി 25-ാം തീയതിയോടുകൂടി പൂർത്തിയായിട്ടുണ്ട്. രണ്ടാംവർഷ വൊക്കേഷണൽ, നോൺ വൊക്കേഷണൽ പ്രായോഗിക പരീക്ഷകൾ പൂർത്തീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. തിയറി പരീക്ഷകളുടെ ചോദ്യപേപ്പർ വിതരണം, ഉത്തരക്കടലാസുകളുടെ വിതരണം എന്നിവയും പൂർത്തിയായിട്ടുണ്ട്. പരീക്ഷ ഡ്യൂട്ടി നിർവ്വഹിക്കേണ്ട ചീഫ്, ഡപ്യൂട്ടി ചീഫ്, ഇൻവിജിലേറ്റേഴ്സ് എന്നിവരുടെ നിയമനവും പൂർത്തീയായിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ഒന്നാം വർഷ പൊതുപരീക്ഷയ്ക്ക് റഗുലർ വിഭാഗത്തിൽ 26831 വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളും ഇംപ്രൂവ്മെൻറ് വിഭാഗത്തിൽ 22740 വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളും രജിസ്റ്റർ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. റഗുലർ വിഭാഗത്തിൽ 16259 ആൺകുട്ടികളും 10572 പെൺകുട്ടികളും രജിസ്റ്റർ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. രണ്ടാംവർഷ പൊതു പരീക്ഷയ്ക്കായി റഗുലർ വിഭാഗത്തിൽ 26372 വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളും പ്രൈവറ്റ് വിഭാഗത്തിൽ 2215 വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളും ചേർന്ന് ആകെ 28587 വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളാണ് രജിസ്റ്റർ ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ളത്. രണ്ടാംവർഷ റഗുലർ വിഭാഗത്തിൽ 15811 ആൺകുട്ടികളും 10561 പെൺകുട്ടികളുമാണ് രജിസ്റ്റർ ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ളത്.

The SSLC, THLC and AHLC examinations will begin in the State on Monday. In all, 4,27,021 students will sit for the SSLC examinations in the regular category in 2,964 centres in Kerala, nine centres in the Lakshadweep Islands, and seven centres in the Gulf region, the General Education department said.

Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty wished success to all the students appearing for this year’s exams which are on till March 26. As many as 2,17,696 boys and 2,09,325 girls are appearing for the examinations. Of the students taking the examinations, 1,42,298 are from government schools, 2,55,092 are from aided schools and 29,631 are from unaided schools.

This year, 682 students will sit for the SSLC examinations in the Gulf sector, and 447 in the Lakshadweep Islands. Eight students will write the exams in the old scheme.

Highest in Malappuram
Among the districts, Malappuram has the highest number of students appearing for the exams; 28,358. The Kuttanad educational district in Alappuzha has the lowest number; 1,893. With 2,017 students appearing for the exams, PKMM HSS, Edarikode, in the Tirurangadi educational district is the centre with the highest number of examinees. Government Sanskrit HS, Fort, in the Thiruvananthapuram educational district has the lowest (1 student).

As many as 3,057 students are appearing for the THLC examinations across 48 centres this year. The number includes 2,815 boys and 242 girls. The AHLC examination has one centre, the Art Higher Secondary School, Kalamandalam, Cheruthuruthy. Sixty-five students are appearing for the examinations this year in this category.

In all, 206 students are appearing for the SSLC (hearing impaired) exams this year in 29 centres. Twelve students will appear for the THLC (hearing impaired) exams at one centre.

72 valuation camps
The State government has arranged 72 camps for the valuation of the answer papers. The valuation will be held in two phases with the first phase planned from April 3 to April 11 and the second, from April 21 to April 26. The scheme finalisation camps held ahead of the centralised valuation will begin in the third week of March.
