Rock Legend Alice Cooper Recounts How God ‘Miraculously Delivered’ Him from Alcohol Addiction

Published

on

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Alice Cooper is considered an American icon. But decades ago, the young musician was spiraling out of control allowing fame, fortune, and partying to drive him to the brink of destruction – that is until God stepped in and turned his life completely around.

“Everything that could go wrong was shutting down inside of me,” Cooper once told the New York Daily News. “I was drinking with Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix and trying to keep up with Keith Moon and they all died at 27.”

Living on the edge of despair and desperation, Cooper was faced with two choices: either allow his alcohol addiction to kill him or give it all to Jesus.

“It was on the road – with all that dead time – when I would really drink too much,” Cooper told Classic Rock. “I didn’t have an off switch. And finally, it caught up with me.”

The year was 1977 and Cooper was at the height of his career, but delving deep into the bottom of the bottom.

“I woke up one morning, threw up blood,” Cooper told Greg Laurie on TBN’s Praise segment. He told the evangelist that his wife Sheryl looked at him and simply said, “Party’s over.”

She and Cooper’s manager, Shep Gordon, held an intervention telling him, “We couldn’t love you more, and this is tough love.”

The world-famous rock star found himself at Cornell Medical Center, a sanitarium located near the city of White Plains in Westchester County, New York.

“This was pretty much at the height of my career,” he recounted. “But in that hospital, none of the other patients had any idea who Alice Cooper was. And the reason for that was very simple. The other patients were all insane!”

Cooper said God did the impossible while he was at the institute. He believes God supernaturally took his desire for alcohol.

“After two days, I felt great,” he told Laurie. “I came out of there, never once had a fallback…Never fell back on alcohol. Never fell back on drugs.”

“[It’s been] 39 years, 38 years. So God just literally took it away from me,” he said.

“So you don’t describe it as you were cured,” Laurie asked. “You say you were healed?”

“People say, ‘You’re a cured alcoholic.’ And I go, ‘No, I was a healed alcoholic.’ God took it away from me,” he explained. “Even the doctor said, ‘It’s impossible that you don’t at least fall off the wagon at least three or four times because you’re the classic alcoholic.’ And I said ‘What you don’t understand is God took it away from me…It’s a miracle.'”

Cooper continued, “After a while, they went, ‘You know what? God took it away from you…Everything about your life should be deception. That’s  an alcoholic and a drug addict does. They put on this air that they’re cured, but back here they’re doing this and they’re doing that.'”

The rock star added that never happened to him and it led his doctors to recognize the divine in his transformation.

“Even the doctors were [saying],’ miracle. You’re a one-in-a-million case.’ And I said well, ‘You know God works like that.'”

If you don’t know Cooper’s conversion story, it is indeed “one in a million.”

Laurie told  that Cooper found himself using cocaine alone in his room one day at the height of his dysfunction.

“He was snorting it, and he looked in the mirror, and he said, ‘I saw blood coming out of my eyes. I don’t know if it was a hallucination or if it was really happening, but all I knew was I was going to die,'” Cooper recalled.

At that moment, Cooper “called out to God” and his entire life changed.

“My wife and I are both Christian now,” the then 70-year-old performer explained. “My father was a pastor, my grandfather was an evangelist. I grew up in the church, went as far away as I could from it — almost died — and then came back to the church.”

Cooper is now using his platform to help young people understand that God loves them and that the devil is real.

“Be careful! Satan is not a myth. Don’t sit around pretending like Satan is just a joke,” Cooper said. “I think my job is to warn about Satan.”

In a recent interview with Laurie, Cooper said he wants more people to know who Jesus Christ is.

“Most people I know, most young people think Jesus Christ is a swear word…they have no idea who Jesus Christ is. He is not preached enough…the most written-about character of all time, in history. And yet people go out of their way to not believe in Him.”

Laurie asked, “Why do you think that is?”

Cooper replied, “I think it’s because they don’t want to give up their godship. They believe the Hollywood version of ‘I do more good than bad’. And I say Satan has got you right where he wants you. ‘[Jesus said] I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no one comes to the Father but by Me.’ Those are the truest words ever spoken. How can you deny that?”

Dallas Jenkins welcomes challenges of eagerly anticipated season 5 of ‘The Chosen’

Published

on

With the premiere of “The Chosen” season five upon us, fans anticipating more of the same might be surprised by what they encounter from the eight new episodes coming over the next few months.

Seen as the beginning of the end in the highly-sought after program’s seven-season arc, viewers will be challenged with the most intense, mature and challenging themes yet.

In a phased release, season five will be available in theaters in the United States and Canada in three parts beginning on March 27. The season will then be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video starting in June.

Creator and director Dallas Jenkins welcomes the challenges and hardships season five presents, most notably the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion, including His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, and His betrayal and subsequent arrest.

“Even though we’re coming to the moments that obviously change the entire world, I had an obligation in season one to get this right,” says Jenkins, who has 12 directing credits on his resume including the recent hit movie, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.” “(We need) to honor the character and intentions of Jesus and the Gospels to make sure that we are making a good show that people actually want to watch.”

Jenkins is thankful for storylines that not only build character but ones that will eventually propel the greatest story ever told to its triumphant ending.

“You’ve got big, big scriptural moments that everyone knows, that everyone, even non-believers are aware of, have seen, or seen depicted, or read about all throughout the world,” Jenkins shares. “I want us to learn the lessons that Jesus was teaching, that they weren’t getting until the Cross and the resurrection.”

To date, more than 200 million viewers have watched at least one episode of “The Chosen” with video views quickly closing in on the 900 million mark worldwide.

Jenkins joins us to talk about how he prepared himself physically and mentally to film the gripping scene of Jesus’ crucifixion. Listen as the popular director explains the significance of this season in the series’ overarching narrative and how it is the most gut-wrenching, emotional season he has ever filmed.

‘God Is in This’: Chris Tomlin Reveals Powerful Providence Behind New Movie ‘The Last Supper’

Published

on

“No one’s heard it.”

It’s easy to chalk things up to coincidence, to believe in happy accidents and happenstance. Chris Tomlin could have very easily credited chance — random serendipity — for his timely connection to an upcoming Christian movie. But he doesn’t; instead, he sees it as divine, predestined providence.

The famed recording artist and worship leader is stepping into a new role: executive producer.

Tomlin, 52, is seated in the producer’s chair for the new movie, “The Last Supper,” set to debut in theaters nationwide March 14. The film, from Pinnacle Peak Pictures, the distribution studio launched nearly 20 years ago by David A.R. White of Pure Flix fame, centers on the days leading up to wayward disciple Judas’ betrayal of Jesus as the Savior’s closest followers gather for a final meal before His impending crucifixion.

When he was first approached by the creators of “The Last Supper,” Tomlin said they asked if he had a song — or could write one — that would work for the film.

“I played a couple songs [and I said], ‘I’ve got this one I just wrote and no one’s heard it — literally, no one’s heard it,’” he recalled of his conversation with the filmmakers. “[I] played it for them and I had not seen the movie when I wrote this song and it just went perfectly with this movie. And I was like, ‘OK, this feels like something that’s right.’”

Finding the song tied to a theatrically released movie was certainly not on Tomlin’s radar when he wrote “No Greater Love” alongside Tyler Hubbard of the country music duo Florida Georgia Line during a writing retreat at 20th century novelist Ernest Hemingway’s home in Ketchum, Idaho.

Hubbard and a couple other country songwriters told Tomlin they wanted to write a worship song with the “Holy Forever” singer, explaining they wanted the theme to focus on John 15:13, which reads, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”..

“Line for line, [I was] like, ‘Wow, this fits so perfectly,” he said. “It was just one of those moments you’re like, ‘OK, we’re in the flow. … God is in this.’ He’s like, ‘I’m putting the pieces together. You didn’t even know I was putting these pieces together, but I’ve got this little plan.’”

“So much of my life,” Tomlin reflected, “is like, ‘Wow, I did not see these pieces coming together like this,’ but you’re just trying to be faithful and follow and walk with God, and it’s amazing what happens.”

Tomlin’s life — and career as a worship leader — has been a sequence of “pieces coming together.”

Of his role not only writing and recording worship music but traveling the world to lead people in worship, Tomlin said he feels the immense responsibility of the calling God has placed on his life.

“I always pray this prayer: ‘God, if your presence does not show up, then there’s not going to be any real lasting [impact],’” he said. “What I mean is I always pray for the presence of God to touch people. “

The singer-songwriter referenced the Old Testament passage Exodus 33:16, as Moses was leading the Israelites out of Sinai and toward the Promised Land. In the verse Moses said to God, “How will anyone know that you look favorably on me — on me and on your people — if you don’t go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth”.

As he picks up his guitar and plays the chords to his songs, Tomlin said his prayer is those who hear him “sense God’s presence.”

“There’s nothing like the sound of the people of God singing the praises of God in the presence of God,” he reflected. “And when that happens, it’s so powerful.”

Tomlin went on to say his concerts should be distinguishable from secular shows, not because he’s a better artist but because “your soul is singing to a living God” when you sing worship songs.

“What we’re doing here is eternal,” he said.
