Can You Trust the Bible? Film Reveals How Gospels Came to Be

Published

on

At a time when revival seems to be pouring out across America, a new film sheds light on how the Gospels were codified.

“Oracles of God: The Story of the New Testament,” from CBN Films, releasing in theaters Nov. 2, 3, and 5 through Fathom Entertainment, has been in the works for the past five years.

Director Erin Zimmerman told CBN News plans for the film started in 2017, while she was living in Israel. But after they started preparing to film in 2019, the COVID pandemic hit and everything was shut down. What followed were ebbs and flows of production.

“We came back in 2023, spent the summer in Israel doing pre-production,” Zimmerman said. “We were supposed to start filming in October 2023.”

Again, production was delayed after Hamas’ horrific terror attack on Israel.

“That was one where I really said, ‘OK, God, what are you doing? Because you had me here all summer. You had us get all the way up to filming. And then, why?’” Zimmerman said. “And the answer I got back then was … ‘I want you to be here. I want you to be here with your people while this is going on.’”

The filmmaker was able to be present in Israel with the cast and crew during such a difficult time. While the timing and delays didn’t initially make sense, Zimmerman said she soon came to see the power of God’s timing. Now, “Oracles of God” is coming at a time when culture is ripe for revival.

“Last year, The Wall Street Journal said this is a golden age of Bible publishing,” Zimmerman said. “Who would ever have thought that? You know, Bible sales last year were up. … This is before Charlie Kirk and all the things that are going on now to sort of stir this up.”

She continued, “Last year, Bible sales were up 22% over the previous year. This year, already, they’ve … sold a million more Bibles than they had at this point last year.”

Zimmerman, in reflecting back on the plan, now realizes God knew what he was doing the entire time as her project faced numerous delays.

“His timing is better than ours,” she said.

Zimmerman said audiences who go to theaters to see “Oracles of God: The Story of the New Testament” will encounter the biblical narrative after Christ’s death and resurrection. And the film will answer a plethora of questions about the New Testament’s formation.

“How did those stories get written down?” he said. “How did we get those? I mean, how did we go from apostles … all through Jesus’ ministry. Jesus was saying to them, ‘Oh, I’m telling you, but you still don’t understand. You still don’t understand what’s going on. Right up to the cross … they still didn’t understand. So how did we go from that to all these men saying, ‘But this is my life’s mission. Now I have to write this down and write it down well.’”

Zimmerman said the film explores how Scripture moved from word-of-mouth to a codified New Testament.

“Suddenly, what happened was the apostles were dying off and persecution was starting to come in,” the filmmaker said. “King Herod was driving the Jews and the Christians out of Judea [and they said], ‘Uh-oh, we’ve got to write this stuff down, because we don’t have the firsthand accounts anymore.’”

Thus, “Oracles of God: The Story of the New Testament” tackles the journey from oral stories to a written canon.

“We have an amazing gift when it comes to knowing about this era,” Zimmerman said. “We have an amazing gift called the church fathers. These Christian leaders who were one generation or even two removed from the apostles. Some of them were even the direct students of the apostle John.”

She said the ability to dive into the reasoning behind the New Testament’s formation was faith-building. As a Christian, Zimmerman said she was “at ground zero with this topic” when she first started working on the project; it was out of her typical topical wheelhouse.

“Some projects … they’re your idea and you want to do them,” she said. “This was not one of those. This one — God told me. I mean, I didn’t get a tablet from Mount Sinai, but you know when God tells you to do something.”

Ultimately, Zimmerman believes “Oracles of God: The Story of the New Testament” will build believers’ faith by helping them see the reliability of Scripture and the stories told within.

“I want people to have a real love and confidence in this text,” she said. “A lot of people don’t believe the Bible because they had personal problems, or bad brushes with Christianity, or something.”

Zimmerman continued, “But there are a lot of people out there who don’t just because they say, ‘Hey, you know what? I think the text is corrupted. Well, I think it has — it wasn’t done by those people. It wasn’t written at this time.’”

But the film, she said, paints a different, more accurate picture of why the New Testament is truly trustworthy. To see the true history behind Scripture, head to theaters Nov. 2, 3, or 5 to see “Oracles of God: The Story of the New Testament.”

A ‘Convinced Atheist’ Finds Jesus on the Sea of Galilee

Published

on

A rising star in Swedish media, Ingrid Carlqvist worked as an investigative reporter and editor at some of the country’s largest news companies.

Her reporting would lead her to take some controversial stands on issues like Muslim immigration to Sweden, which would doom her career in the mainstream media.

Then, after 59 years of living as a convinced atheist, her life completely changed in 2019.

An Atheist Who Was ‘Very Fond of Christianity’

Ingrid said, “I thought I was an atheist, but I was very fond of Christianity. I, for many years, dreamed about there being a revival in Sweden.”

“I just didn’t think I needed it.”

Ingrid’s journey to Christ began when her friend Henrik Hultberg, a Christian, was miraculously healed of a serious blood clot in his brain while in the hospital.

Ingrid recounted, “(Henrik) said to me, ‘You have to become a Christian. That’s the thing, don’t you understand?’”

Ingrid told him, “‘Yeah, I, I think I want to. But how do you do it?’ And then God started doing things in my life.”

Meeting Jesus at the Sea of Galilee ‘On The Wrong Boat’

The turning point came when Ingrid went to Israel, visiting the Sea of Galilee where, as she puts it, she “got in the wrong boat.”

After Ingrid talked about Christianity on her podcast, a listener suggested she meet Lars Enarson, a Swedish Bible teacher living in Israel.

Enarson said, “That’s when I decided I’m going to connect with her and see if she would be interested in coming to Israel and I could show her what Israel is all about. And she graciously accepted.”

Enarson and his sister Ellen gave Ingrid a tour of the Holy Land and scheduled a trip to the Sea of Galilee. She traveled north with Ellen, and they prepared to board one of the many tourist boats that operate on the lake.

Ingrid said, “And then I just saw a lot of people walking onto this boat, and I said, ‘Ellen, that must be our boat. Let’s go.’ And we went on this boat, and suddenly people started to sing in English hymns.”

It was a boat chartered by a group of American Christians.

And Ingrid told Ellen, “I think we’re on the wrong boat.’ And she said, ‘Okay, but now we’re here. Let’s just have fun.’ As she sang along with them, she knew all these hymns, but I had really bad conscience. I hadn’t paid for my ticket.”

Then the Pastor told the story of Jesus walking on water, calming the storm, and how Peter tried to walk on water and began to sink because of his unbelief.

Jesus’ Words Hit Her Like a ‘Boom!’

When the Pastor repeated the words of Jesus, “Why do you have so little faith, Peter?” Ingrid said they hit her like a “’boom’ in my heart. I started crying. And I just cried and cried and cried. And I thought to myself, ‘Wow, I really met Jesus today.’”

As the boat returned to shore, Ingrid, her face still red from crying, felt guilty because she hadn’t bought a ticket for the cruise.

“So, I went up to the Pastor, and I said, ’My name is Ingrid and I’m from Sweden, and I’m so sorry that I got on the wrong boat. And he looked at me and said ‘Ingrid, you were definitely on the right boat.’”

The Smears on Her Reputation Followed Her Into Church

Ingrid returned to Sweden and began reading her Bible each day and even enrolled in a Bible College. Although when she wanted to join a church, the media’s past attacks on her reputation, that she was “an Islamophobe, a racist, a horrible person,” followed her.

Members of one church looked up Ingrid on the web and she says she felt unwelcome and left.

Then she discovered a church pastored by Sven Wiborn.

Wiborn told us, “I looked it up on the internet and I could see very, very bad things written about her. And I was interested. So, I went to her and I talked to her, and I found a longing for truth. And she told me she had been rejected in different churches. And I said, ‘It’s not right.’ If God has saved her, who are we to stop her? Even if she’s different? Doesn’t matter.”

Ingrid Says God Gave Her the Title For her Book

Then, as she was driving to her baptism, “I heard a voice in my head saying, ‘You must write a book about your story, how you came to faith. And I will give you the title.’ And in English it is ‘Oh my God, Do You Really Exist?’

“Because it’s true, He exists.”

Ingrid’s new book, Oh My God, Do You Really Exist?, was published last month. Lars Enarson, who wrote the forward, says we should never decide who is a good candidate to become a Christian.

“There are many people who are looking for truth today and many are like her and they just need to hear the truth, “Enarson said. “I think many are open today. And we have the answer. So, I think we need to be very bold in in reaching out to these people.”

And Henrik Hultberg, who’s miraculous healing started Ingrid on her journey, said he knew God was going to get her.

“I was pretty convinced,” Hultberg told us. “I just thought, ‘He’ll get her soon enough. Sooner or later, He’ll get her.’”

Her New Mission: Reaching a Nation of ‘Unhappy Swedes’

Ingrid wants to use her new book to reach a nation of what she calls “unhappy Swedes,” many of whom in polling have admitted that their lives lack meaning.

“That’s my mission. You can go around and believe almost all of your life that you are an atheist because ‘It’s cool. It’s cool to be an atheist.’ Then you believe in ‘science’ and all that stuff. And God is for people who are ‘weak or a little stupid. ‘”

“So, my message is, ‘No, it’s not. It’s just waiting there for you. You can change your life like this and just be filled with happiness.’”

Ingrid hopes to release an English version of her book soon.

‘I Know God’s Power’: Dallas Jenkins Reacts Moments After Filming Last-Ever ‘The Chosen’ Scene

Published

on

“The Chosen” creator Dallas Jenkins was filled with gratitude last Thursday night just moments after filming the final scene of his popular biblical series.

Jenkins, who exclusively invited CBN News on set in Texas to witness those last moments, expressed his profound gratitude for how the show is coming to an end.

“I feel awesome because there’s no more days hanging over my head, no more seasons hanging over my head, we’ve done the work that we set out to go,” he said. “God provided everything that we needed.”

The last scene, which featured the disciples on a boat, was memorable because the vessel used in filming was the same seen in the first season of the show. The scene offered a literal and figurative full-circle moment.

“God has met us here in the waters so often,” Jenkins said. “I have nothing but gratitude.”

Ultimately, Jenkins said the mission behind the show has never changed, even as the audience has swelled to over 100 million people.

“We haven’t changed,” he said. “We’re still trying to do the work for God. We’re still humbled, we’re still surrendered, we’re still grinding.”

As for how the seven-season journey changed Jenkins, he said it offered him insight into God’s character and relationship with mankind.

“I’ve been a believer as long as I can remember,” he said. “I know God’s power. … I don’t think I knew quite as much as I do now from doing this show how intimate of a God He is, how personal of a God he is.”
