Massive fire breaks out in Karnataka’s Bandipur National Park
Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Monday announced that the Indian Air Force (IAF) will join the operations to contain the forest fire raging in the state’s Bandipur Tiger Reserve area for the past five days.
“Decided to use Air Force’s help to contain the fire. The Air Force Chief was contacted and a request was placed for immediate help. The Air Force Chief has responded positively and preparations are on for the operation.”
“The Chief Secretary will personally monitor rescue operations,” he said in another tweet.
The forest fire in Bandipur has gutted thousands of acres of land and is feared to have killed hundreds of reptiles, wild animals, and insects. It has also jeopardised the lives of tigers.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka CM convened a review meeting with Chief Secretary TM Vijay Bhaskar, secretaries of the forest, senior police officers, and officials of the fire department to discuss the matter.
He has urged the public to stay away from the affected areas in Bandipur until the situation is contained.
Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, the fire in the forest area of Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Nilgiris district is raging on unabated for the third day.
The fire has now spread to approximately 250 acres, said the officials. More than 100 forest department officials and tribals were making efforts to contain the fire, said forest department sources.
Tourists have been barred from entering into the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve.
