69 people rescued from chains, cages and torture at Christian ministry in Trinidad
69 people were rescued Wednesday from a life of chains, cages and torture at a Christian ministry in the twin island nation of Trinidad & Tobago in a case local police describe as “slavery” in the largest human trafficking ring in the country.
“What we believe is that we have cracked what we believe is the biggest human trafficking ring in the country … some of them said they have been here for years … this is a much bigger picture and we have to investigate each and every case…this relates to virtual slavery with what we have seen here,” Trinidad & Tobago’s Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith told.
Police announced that they rescued 65 men and four women from the Transformed Life Ministry Rehabilitation Centre in Arouca, Trinidad, during a sting operation Wednesday morning. The victims were ranged in ages from 20 to their 60s and most of them were found “in cages and some handcuffs.”
“Some of them say they have been tortured. It is such a bigger picture with profit being made out of this … family members deliberately sending their loved ones here and extracting the profits from the families,” Griffith said.
Human trafficking, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act. Millions of men, women, and children are trafficked worldwide annually, including in the U.S.
A member of the ministry speaking on condition of anonymity to the T&T Guardian denied that the people found at the facility were being trafficked and noted that the Transformed Life Ministry Rehabilitation Centre is simply a rehabilitation home for people who want to come out of drug addiction.
“It is not human trafficking. It is a rehab so the pastor have the place gated to prevent them from running away. These people’s parents sign contracts and agree. They also view the places. … So why would families put their love one there if they saw it? Nobody there is in chains, etc., they are lying. God hear me it is a lie, “the ministry member said.
It was still unclear Thursday how the victims were being used for profit but Griffiths said the “barbaric” scene they encountered at the ministry showed evidence that the victims were being tortured.
“Persons are seen in cages, handcuffed … persons were being tortured. We saw tasers and batons … and again this is a situation of virtual modern day slavery,” he said.
At least six persons have already been arrested in connection with the ministry which promised to use the Gospel and expert training to “serve male ex-prisoners and deportees by providing safe transitional housing, developmental and rehabilitation programmers, to promote healthy reintegration into society.”
“The philosophy at TLM is one of empowerment and responsibility. The ministry wants to ensure that residents leave the facility rehabilitated, empowered and self-sufficient. The residents should not only be capable of taking care of themselves, but also accepting the responsibility of providing for their families and giving back to the community,” the operators of the ministry state on their website.
The ministry was founded 19 years ago by pastor and ex-convict, Glen Awong, who said he was called to serve while doing a seven-year stint at the local Golden Grove Prison.
“Despite adverse conditions and lack of resources, Glen ministered to the spiritual needs of the prisoners with a strong desire to impart the new found grace and message of God’s redeeming and restoration powers, that can change the ‘worst’ individual and remove the stains left behind from a life without God,” the ministry said.
Awong’s work in the prison with other inmates attracted the attention of prison officials and it earned him early release from prison for good behavior.
He continued visiting with inmates after his release and conducted Bible classes with other former inmates until they found a physical space to house the ministry.
The operators of the ministry have featured testimonies from families with loved ones struggling with substance abuse and other mental health issues.
“I came to Transformed Life Ministry in 2009 and since then, I was able to get one-on-one counseling, helping me to refrain from substance use and abuse; learning that my addiction is a disease and is curable; that once an addict is not always and addict. I also met and related with other people who were addicts and most important building a relationship with God,” one testimony from a happy client identified as James, 29, said.
“I am still at Transformed Life Ministry and my goal is to take it one day at a time, work with the ministry to help others see the vision. Thanks to pastor Awong, Mrs. Awong, and Transformed Life Ministry for helping me rearrange my life for the better.”

ആയുധധാരികളായ വന്‍ തീവ്രവാദി സംഘം അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായി ആക്രമണം നടത്തുകയായിരുന്നെന്നും, അടുത്തുള്ള സൈനീക കേന്ദ്രത്തില്‍ നിന്നും സൈനീക സംഘം എത്തുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പേ തന്നെ 10 പേര്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നുവെന്നും പ്രാദേശിക സാമുദായിക നേതാവായ ഹസ്സന്‍ ചിബോക് പറയുന്നു. ചിബോകിലെ കാടുകാരി ഗ്രാമത്തോടു ചേര്‍ന്ന വനപ്രദേശത്ത് തീവ്രവാദികളുടെ വന്‍തോതിലുള്ള സാന്നിധ്യം ഉള്ളതിനാല്‍ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ വളരേയേറെ മോശമായി കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി. സൈന്യം എത്തുന്നതിന് മുന്‍പായി 7 പേര്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നുവെന്ന് യാന ഗലാങ്ങ് എന്ന മറ്റൊരു പ്രദേശവാസി പറഞ്ഞു.

സൊകോട്ട; മതനിന്ദ നടത്തിയെന്ന ആരോപണത്തിന്റെ പേരില്‍ നൈജീരിയയില്‍ കല്ലെറിഞ്ഞു കൊലപ്പെടുത്തി മൃതദേഹം അഗ്നിക്കിരയാക്കിയ നൈജീരിയന്‍ ക്രൈസ്തവ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിനിയ്ക്കു നീതി ലഭിക്കണമെന്ന ആവശ്യവുമായി നൈജീരിയയില്‍ ക്രിസ്ത്യന്‍ സമൂഹങ്ങളുടെ കൂട്ടായ്മയായ ‘ക്രിസ്ത്യന്‍ അസോസിയേഷന്‍ ഓഫ് നൈജീരിയ’ (സി.എ.എന്‍) രംഗത്ത്. കൊലപാതകികളെ ഉടന്‍ അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്ത് കോടതിയില്‍ ഹാജരാക്കി തക്കതായ ശിക്ഷ നല്‍കണമെന്ന്‍ സി.എ.എന്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. കൊലപാതകത്തിന് പിന്നില്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചവരെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്ന രണ്ടുപേരെ പോലീസ് അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും വിഷയത്തില്‍ പോലീസ് മെല്ലപ്പോക്ക് നയം തുടരുകയാണെന്ന ആക്ഷേപമുണ്ട്.
ഷെഹു ഷാഗിരി കോളേജിലെ വിദ്യാർത്ഥിനി ദെബോറ യാക്കുബുവാണ് ക്രൂരമായ കൊലപാതകത്തിന് ഇരയായത്. ഇസ്ലാമിക പ്രവാചകനായ മുഹമ്മദിനെ നിന്ദിക്കുന്ന പരാമർശം വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെ വാട്സ്ആപ്പ് കൂട്ടായ്മയിൽ ദെബോറ നടത്തിയെന്ന ആരോപണമാണ് അക്രമത്തിലേക്ക് നയിച്ചത്. എന്നാല്‍ വാട്സാപ്പ് ഗ്രൂപ്പില്‍ “യേശു ക്രിസ്തു ഏറ്റവും മഹത്വമുള്ളവനാണ്, എന്റെ പരീക്ഷകള്‍ പാസാകുവാന്‍ അവന്‍ എന്നെ സഹായിച്ചു” എന്ന വോയിസ് മെസേജ് പോസ്റ്റ്‌ ചെയ്തതിനാണ് വര്‍ഗ്ഗീയവാദികളായ സഹപാഠികള്‍ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തിയതെന്ന് ആഗോള ക്രൈസ്തവ പീഡനം നിരീക്ഷിക്കുന്ന ഓപ്പണ്‍ ഡോര്‍സിന്റെ പ്രാദേശിക ഘടകങ്ങള്‍ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് ചെയ്യുന്നു.
അക്കാദമിക കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ചര്‍ച്ച ചെയ്യേണ്ട വാട്സാപ്പ് ഗ്രൂപ്പില്‍ തന്റെ സഹപാഠി ഇസ്ലാമിക കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ പ്രചരിപ്പിച്ചതിനോടുള്ള പ്രതികരണം എന്ന നിലയിലായിരുന്നു യാക്കുബുവിന്റെ പോസ്റ്റ്‌. നിയമവിരുദ്ധവും നിന്ദ്യവുമായ ഈ നടപടിയെ ശരിയായി ചിന്തിക്കുന്നവര്‍ അപലപിക്കുമെങ്കിലും ‘അള്ളാഹു അക്ബര്‍’ എന്നാര്‍ത്തുവിളിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് യാക്കുബുവിനെ കല്ലെറിയുകയും, മര്‍ദ്ദിക്കുകയും, തീകൊളുത്തി കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തവരെ കണ്ടെത്തി വിചാരണ ചെയ്യേണ്ടത് സുരക്ഷാ സേനയാണെന്നു സി.എ.എന്‍ ജനറല്‍ സെക്രട്ടറി ഫാ. ജോസഫ് ഡാരമോല പ്രസ്താവിച്ചു.
രക്തത്തില്‍ കുളിച്ച് ബോധരഹിതയായി കിടക്കുന്ന യാക്കുബുവിനെ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിന്റെ വീഡിയോകള്‍ സമൂഹമാധ്യമങ്ങളില്‍ പ്രചരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്. ജീവന് ഭീഷണി ഉണ്ടായതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ യാക്കുബുവിനെ കോളേജ് അധികാരികള്‍ ഒളിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന സെക്യൂരിറ്റി മുറിയില്‍ നിന്നും പുറത്തേക്ക് വലിച്ചിഴച്ചു കൊണ്ടുപോയാണ്‌ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തിയത്. സ്കൂളിലെ സെക്യൂരിറ്റി ജീവനക്കാരും, പോലീസും യാക്കുബുവിനെ രക്ഷപ്പെടുത്തുവാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചെങ്കിലും രോഷാകുലരായ വര്‍ഗ്ഗീയവാദികളുടെ മുന്‍പില്‍ നിസ്സഹായരാവുകയായിരുന്നു.
മതസ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സന്നദ്ധ സംഘടനയായ ക്രിസ്റ്റ്യന്‍ സോളിഡാരിറ്റി വേള്‍ഡ് വൈഡ്-നൈജീരിയയും (സി.എസ്.ഡബ്ലിയു.എന്‍) ക്രൂര നരഹത്യയെ ശക്തമായ ഭാഷയില്‍ അപലപിച്ചു. സംസ്കാരവും, സഹിഷ്ണുതയും ഉറപ്പുനല്‍കുന്ന അക്കാദമിക പരിതസ്ഥിതിയില്‍ ഇത്തരമൊരു കൊലപാതകം നടന്നതിനെ കുറിച്ച് ചിന്തിക്കണമെന്നും, വടക്കന്‍ നൈജീരിയ അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന സമാധാനത്തിനും, പരസ്പര സൗഹാര്‍ദ്ദത്തിനും, മതനിരപേക്ഷതക്കും ഈ കൊലപാതകം ഒരു വെല്ലുവിളിയാണെന്നും സംഘടന പ്രസ്താവിച്ചു.
സൊകോട്ടോയിലെ സുല്‍ത്താനേറ്റ് കൗണ്‍സിലും, സൊകോട്ടോ രൂപതാധ്യക്ഷന്‍ മാത്യു കുക്കായും ഈ കൊലപാതകത്തെ അപലപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇതിനിടെ അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്ത പ്രതികളെ കുറ്റവിമുക്തരാക്കണമെന്ന് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് ചിലര്‍ സംഘടിച്ച് രംഗത്തുവന്നു. പക്ഷപാതരഹിതമായ അന്വേഷണം നടക്കുമെന്നു നൈജീരിയന്‍ പ്രസിഡന്റ് മുഹമ്മദ്‌ ബുഹാരി പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ക്രൈസ്തവ സമൂഹത്തിന് വലിയ പ്രതീക്ഷയില്ല. തുടര്‍ച്ചയായി ക്രൈസ്തവര്‍ക്ക് നേരെ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന അക്രമ പരമ്പരകളില്‍ മൗനം പാലിക്കുന്ന ബുഹാരിയ്ക്കെതിരെ രാജ്യത്തെ വിവിധ മെത്രാന്‍മാര്‍ വിമര്‍ശനം നടത്തിയിരിന്നു. ഇതിനിടെ അടുത്ത വര്‍ഷത്തെ പ്രസിഡന്റ് തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ മത്സരിക്കുവാനിരിക്കുന്ന അതികു അബൂബക്കര്‍ കൊലപാതകത്തെ അപലപിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ട്വീറ്റ് ചെയ്തിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് പിന്‍വലിച്ചു.

1 dead, 4 critically injured by gunman at Presbyterian church in California; suspect is in police custody
At a news conference Sunday, authorities said a shooting at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, California, that left one person dead occurred at a lunch banquet after a church service. The suspected shooter was identified as an Asian male in his 60s who doesn’t live in the community and has no known ties to the church.
Four people were critically injured in the shooting, and one person suffered minor injuries. All victims are adults and have been transported to area hospitals. Police described parishioners’ swift action to apprehend the suspect and hog-tie him until police arrived as an act of “exceptional heroism and bravery.” Authorities did not say if the shooting would be investigated as a hate crime or what the suspect’s motives were.
