Pakistani Christian woman Asia Bibi: Asking France for Asylum

Paris: Asia Bibi, the Pakistani Christian woman who spent years on death row after a 2010 conviction of blasphemy, said Monday that she was seeking political asylum from the French government.
“My great desire is to live in France,” Bibi said in an interview with RTL radio, her first trip to France since fleeing with her family to Canada in 2018.
Her visit comes a few weeks after the publication of her book “Enfin Libre!” (Finally Free) in French last month, with an English version due in September.
“France is the country from where I received my new life… Anne-Isabelle is an angel for me,” she said, referring to the French journalist Anne-Isabelle Tollet, who waged a long campaign for her release and later co-wrote Bibi’s book.
On Tuesday, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is to bestow an honorary citizenship certificate granted to Bibi by the city in 2014, when she was still behind bars.
She said she did not have any meeting scheduled with President Emmanuel Macron, but “obviously I would like the president to hear my request.”
In her book, Bibi recounts the nightmare conditions she was subjected to in prison until her release in 2018, amid an international outcry over her treatment.
The acquittal sparked fierce rioting in Muslim-majority Pakistan, where Christians are often the target of persecution.
She later fled with her family to Canada, where she has been living in an undisclosed location under police protection.
“Obviously I am enormously grateful to Canada,” Bibi said, adding that she now wanted to work “hand in hand” with Tollet to urge Pakistan authorities to free others imprisoned over the country’s anti-blasphemy laws.
The allegations against Bibi date back to 2009, when Muslim field labourers who were working alongside her refused to share water because she was Christian.
An argument broke out and a Muslim woman later went to a local cleric and accused Bibi of committing blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed.
But despite her dramatic acquittal by Pakistan’s chief justice, activists warned that freedom for Bibi would likely mean a life under threat by hardliners who have long called for her death.
Last May, she was spirited away to Canada, where Tollet was the only reporter to have met with Bibi since her arrival.
In her book, Bibi tells of the humiliating and horrendous conditions in prison, and the daily torments suffered by the country’s Christian minority.
She also recounts the difficulty of adjusting to her new life, and the pain of having to leave without seeing her father or other members of her family.
“Pakistan is my country. I love my country but I am in exile forever,” she wrote.

‘It had always been a dream of mine’: Bear Grylls gets baptised in the Jordan River

Explorer and TV presenter Bear Grylls has fulfilled a lifelong dream, by being baptised in the Jordan River, the same sacred place where Jesus received baptism from John the Baptist.
Grylls shared a picture of this significant moment on X, formerly Twitter, writing: “It had always been a dream of mine to get in the water that Jesus was baptised in by my hero John the Baptist. The story is so amazing, & it seems wherever Jesus went, that new birth, new life, a new vision followed. Luke (in the bible) was probably a Syrian doctor before he met Jesus. He writes a reliable, poignant account of his life. It’s short. I like it.”
The Gospel of Luke tells the story of Jesus Christ’s life, teachings, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension and it is often used to help new believers understand Jesus’ teachings and how to live the new life in Christ.
Grylls has often been open about his faith and is an ambassador for the Alpha Course, which introduces people to Christian basics.
Earlier this year, the adventurer made headlines after he said he believes “Jesus would struggle with 99 per cent of churches nowadays” during an interview with the Christian Post.
For him, Christians should prioritise a personal relationship with God over religious rituals.
He said: “Our job in life is to stay close to Christ and drop the religious, drop the fluff, drop the church if you need to because that means so many different things to different people anyway. Keep the bit of church which is about community and friends and honesty and faith and love. All the masks, performances, music and worship bands and all of that sort of stuff—I don’t think Christ would recognize a lot of that.”
Grylls was also famously seen praying for former president of the USA, Barack Obama during an episode of his TV show Running Wild with Bear Grylls.

‘We’ve Got to Wake Up!’: Former Supermodel Kathy Ireland Delivers Powerful Message Defending Life, Call to Action for Church

Model-turned-entrepreneur Kathy Ireland was recently honored at an influential pro-life gala, but the business mogul told the audience she wasn’t always on the side of life.
“As a young adult, I identified as a pro-choice Christian,” Ireland reportedly said Sept. 23 while accepting an award at Live Action’s Life Awards Gala. “It just shows you the state of our nation. How does that happen?”
But she realized in her 40s — decades after she became a Christian — her views on abortion didn’t comport with Scripture; she realized abortion actually violates God’s truth.
Now, Ireland is calling on believers and churches to speak out and realize the same.
“We’ve got to wake up our churches,” she said. “We’ve got to wake up!”
And she wasn’t done there. The Kathy Ireland Worldwide founder also delivered a powerful message to women who have sought abortions.
“To the women who’ve had abortions — the estimation is one-in-four — just know that nothing is too big for God,” she said. “We bring it to him; we repent. He redeems and restores.”
It’s truly a powerful and transformational message for post-abortive women to ponder.
In a move not commonplace in Hollywood, Ireland has openly discussed her Christian views in recent years. She told Fox News in February about the important role faith plays in her life.
“The most important relationship in my life is with Jesus and though I became a Christian at 18 … I am so grateful that God is so patient and so gracious,” she said. “I love that Scripture tells us, ‘The one who is forgiven much, loves much,’ so I love a whole bunch.”
