Chinese Government Demolished Swedish Missionaries’ Gravestones
China– The Shanxi government destroyed more than 20 Swedish missionaries’ gravestones in their designated cemetery on September 12. An adjoining house for visitors was demolished as well.
The Swedish missionary cemetery in Xiezhou town, administered by the Yanhu district of Yuncheng, a prefecture-level city in the northern province of Shanxi, is the resting place for many of the missionaries sent by the Swedish Mission in China (Svenska Missionen i Kina (SMK)) in the early 1900s.
According to Bitter Winter, SMK missionaries’ charitable work building schools and hospitals, free of charge for locals, played an important role in the areas’ development and led numerous to Christianity.
“Swedish missionaries bought a plot in Yuncheng’s Xiezhou town cemetery for themselves,” an elderly Christian from Yuncheng told Bitter Winter. “This meant that they devoted their hearts, souls, and entire lives to China.”
Earlier this year, a local house church, the Church of Christ’s Family (CCF), contacted the offspring of one of the deceased missionaries and made 20 gravestones for the Swedish servants, in remembrance of their work and contribution. A house nearby was renovated to show the history of SMK and the missionaries’ footprints.
All the efforts put to honor these missionaries were nullified on September 12, as the Yanhu district government dispatched over 100 special police and public security officers to block the street leading to the cemetery. Those who tried to document this demolition were threatened and told to leave immediately, as an aerial drone hovered above them.
About two hours later, under the charge of “illegal constructions,” three excavators were brought in to desecrate the Swedish missionaries’ gravestones and the adjoining house. To conceal the demolition, the local authorities planted vegetation atop the ruins overnight.
Residents nearby the site and CCF leaders were removed in advance and banned from using their cell phones to report the incident. CCF is also now placed under surveillance for contacting the late Swedish missionary’s family.
The Chinese Communist Party’s attitude towards missionaries in China is becoming like that of North Korea, where it only wants to wipe out their contribution and stigmatize their work.

വാഷിംഗ്ടൺ ഡിസി: ഇസ്ലാമിലേക്ക് മതപരിവര്‍ത്തനം ചെയ്തതിന് ശേഷം അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായി യേശുവിനെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടിയതിനെ കുറിച്ച് മൈക്ക് വെസ്റ്റര്‍ഫീല്‍ഡ് എന്ന അമേരിക്കക്കാരന്‍ പുറത്തുവിട്ട വീഡിയോ സാക്ഷ്യം ശ്രദ്ധ നേടുന്നു. “ഐ ഫൗണ്ട് ദി ട്രൂത്ത്‌” എന്ന പേരിലാണ് മൈക്ക് തന്റെ വീഡിയോ സാക്ഷ്യം പുറത്തുവിട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. ക്രൈസ്തവരായ മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍ക്ക് ജനിച്ച് ദൈവഭക്തിയില്‍ വളര്‍ന്ന വ്യക്തിയായിരിന്നു മൈക്ക്. എന്നാല്‍ ഫ്ലോറിഡയിലെ ജയിലില്‍ കണ്ടുമുട്ടിയ മുസ്ലീങ്ങള്‍ നല്‍കിയ ഇസ്ലാമിക പാഠങ്ങളാണ് മൈക്കിനെ ഇസ്ലാമിലേക്ക് ആകര്‍ഷിച്ചത്. തന്റെ സഹതടവുകാരായ മുസ്ലീങ്ങളുടെ ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് തനിക്ക് ഉത്തരമില്ലായിരുന്നുവെന്നു മൈക്ക് പറയുന്നു. അവർ മൈക്കിന്റെ ബലഹീനത ശരിക്കും മുതലെടുക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെയാണ് മൈക്ക് ഇസ്ലാമിക വിശ്വാസം സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നത്.
12 വര്‍ഷത്തോളം മുസ്ലീമായിട്ടാണ് താന്‍ ജീവിച്ചതെന്ന്‍ പറഞ്ഞ മൈക്ക്, ഒരു മുസ്ലീം ഇമാമോ പണ്ഡിതനോ ആകണമെന്ന ഉദ്ദേശത്തോടെ ഒരു ഇസ്ലാമിക് സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലയില്‍ കുറേക്കാലം പഠിച്ചുവെന്നും വെളിപ്പെടുത്തി. ഏഴു വര്‍ഷക്കാലം കടുത്ത ഇസ്ലാമായി ജീവിച്ചതിന് ശേഷമാണ് മൈക്ക് ഇസ്ലാമിലെ പല വൈരുധ്യങ്ങളും മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നത്. അന്നുമുതല്‍ മൈക്ക് യേശുവിനെ കുറിച്ച് വീണ്ടും ചിന്തിക്കുവാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. ക്രമേണ ബൈബിള്‍ വായിക്കുവാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ മൈക്ക്, മുന്‍പ് താന്‍ പഠിച്ച ബൈബിള്‍ കോളേജില്‍ നിന്നും ലഭിച്ച പഴയ ക്രിസ്തീയ പുസ്തകങ്ങളും, ക്രിസ്തുവിനെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള ലീ സ്ട്രോബെല്ലിന്റെ ലേഖനങ്ങളും വായിക്കുകയും, പ്രമുഖ വചനപ്രഘോഷകനായ രവി സക്കറിയയുടെ വീഡിയോകള്‍ കാണുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഇസ്ലാം വിട്ട് ക്രിസ്തു വിശ്വാസം സ്വീകരിച്ച അബ്ദു മുറേയേ കണ്ടതും മൈക്കിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ ഒരു വഴിത്തിരിവായിരുന്നു. തനിക്കുള്ള എല്ലാ സംശയങ്ങളും മൈക്ക് അബ്ദു മുറേയോട് ചോദിച്ചു. 2012-ല്‍ യേശുവിനെ സ്വപ്നത്തിൽ ദർശിക്കുകയായിരിന്നുവെന്നും അത് വഴിത്തിരിവായി മാറുകയായിരിന്നുവെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പറയുന്നു. ആ സ്വപ്നത്തില്‍ യേശുവിന്റെ രക്തത്തില്‍ കുളിച്ച് നില്‍ക്കുന്നതായാണ് മൈക്ക് കണ്ടത്. ഈ സ്വപ്നം കണ്ടത് എന്തിന് വേണ്ടിയാണെന്ന് അവന് മനസ്സിലായില്ല. യേശുവിന്റെ തീക്ഷ്ണതയുള്ള കണ്ണുകള്‍ തന്നിലേക്ക് തുളച്ച് കയറുകയായിരുന്നുവെന്നു മൈക്ക് പറയുന്നു. താന്‍ കണ്ട സ്വപ്നത്തേക്കുറിച്ച് മൈക്ക് അബ്ദു മുറേയുമായി സംസാരിച്ചു. അതുകേട്ട അബ്ദു ഞെട്ടിപ്പോയി, കാരണം മൈക്കിന് സ്വപ്നമുണ്ടായ അതേ രാത്രിയില്‍ അബ്ദുവും ജോഷ്‌ മക്ഡോവെലും മൈക്കിന് സ്വപ്നത്തില്‍ ദര്‍ശനം നല്‍കണമെന്ന് യേശുവിനോട് പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിച്ചിരുന്നു.
ദൈവം ആ പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥന കേട്ടുവെന്നും എന്റെ പാപങ്ങള്‍ ക്ഷമിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതിനു യേശുവിന്റെ രക്തം മതിയാകുമെന്ന് തനിക്ക് വെളിപ്പെടുത്തി തന്നുവെന്നും മൈക്ക് പറയുന്നു. ആ നിമിഷം യേശുവാണ് ഏകാക്ഷകൻ എന്ന സത്യം അവന് മനസ്സിലാക്കി. എന്നിരുന്നാലും ഇസ്ലാം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കുക എന്നത് അത്ര എളുപ്പമുള്ള കാര്യമല്ലായിരുന്നു. ഒടുവില്‍ 2013 ജനുവരി മാസത്തിലാണ് മൈക്ക് തന്റെ സര്‍വ്വവും യേശുവിന് അടിയറവുവെച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ക്രിസ്തുവില്‍ പുതുജന്മം ആരംഭിച്ചത്. ഇന്ന്‍ ക്രിസ്റ്റ്യന്‍ സ്റ്റഡീസില്‍ മാസ്റ്റേഴ്സ് ബിരുദമുള്ള വ്യക്തിയാണ് മൈക്ക്. ഇസ്ലാമിലേക്ക് ആകര്‍ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന മറ്റ് ക്രൈസ്തവര്‍ക്ക് പ്രചോദനമാകുവാന്‍ വേണ്ടി “യേശുവിന്റെ രക്ഷപ്പെടാനാവാത്ത സ്നേഹം” എന്ന മറ്റൊരു വീഡിയോ കൂടി മൈക്ക് പുറത്തുവിട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.

‘The Lord is with us’: Florida pastor shares update in the wake of Hurricane Ian’s destruction
“The Lord is with us” and there are “many reasons to be filled with hope and even to rejoice,” says a pastor in Florida in an update after Hurricane Ian made landfall with winds of 150 mph, killing at least 32 people and causing catastrophic floods and life-threatening storm surge.
Communicating on behalf of Pastor Tom Ascol, Hannah Ellis posted a message on his Facebook page Saturday morning, saying that cell service and power are down in the area and relief efforts will be ongoing for a long time as homes and businesses are rebuilt and restored. Many people have asked how they can help, she said, providing a link to where financial donations can be sent directly to the church to assist their efforts in the community.
At least 27 people were killed in the storm in Florida, and the number could grow, NBC News reported, adding that more than 1.3 million customers in the state remained without power three days after Hurricane Ian’s landfall Wednesday afternoon.
“In the wake of such catastrophe it is easy to be disoriented by the traumatic experiences you have just lived through and the catastrophic loss that is evident everywhere,” wrote Pastor Tom Ascol of Grace Baptist Church in Cape Coral, Florida, in a Facebook post on Thursday.
“But God’s people, those who have tasted and know that He is good, who have experienced His grace in the salvation found in His crucified, risen Son, our Lord — Jesus Christ, we have many reasons to be filled with hope and even to rejoice,” added Ascol, who ran for Southern Baptist Convention president in June.
Ascol said efforts were already underway to check on church members and help with relief and recovery efforts.
“In and through it all I was reminded of the Lord’s mercies,” he continued, sharing that he and his wife were away on a prescheduled trip during the storm, but their children, grandchildren and church family endured the storm.
“Very often these reminders came from the people with whom we were communicating. God kept babies safe. He kept first responders strong enough to fulfill their duties. … He gave wisdom to our governor and local officials. He displayed His power over His created world in ways that are undeniable for those who have eyes to see. The greatest meteorological minds could not precisely predict the track of the storm, much less control it. Our God displayed that He, and He alone, is God.”
The U.S. Coast Guard said it had saved 325 people and 83 pets in its response to Hurricane Ian as of Friday evening.
“The impacts of this storm are historic and the damage that has been done is historic,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday. We’ve never seen a flood event like this, we’ve never seen a storm surge of this magnitude.”
Ascol said his church members and their neighbors were working together to start the recovery process in the community. “As we start the long, arduous process of digging out, healing, and rebuilding, we will do so fully aware that we are not on our own. The Lord is with us. His mercies will sustain us. He is faithful.”
In June, when Pastor Ascol was a candidate for SBC president, a debate was raging over the best legal approach to abortion and how it informs resolutions within the Southern Baptist Convention.
He told The Christian Post in an interview at the time that the overwhelming majority of Southern Baptists were “completely pro-life” but he didn’t like the way in which the disagreement within the denomination had been framed.
“The ERLC has been planning for over a year the acknowledgment of the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Why not put all of our resources into ending Roe v. Wade before the 50th anniversary?” he asked. “It’s not so much incrementalism versus abolitionism. Anything we can do to save one child, let’s do. But let’s not take our eye off the prize of ending abortion now.”
