There will be a great flood on the earth, and the sea will rise; NASA warning
A study, led by the members of NASA Sea Level Change Science Team from the University of Hawaii, has predicted a decade of “dramatic increases” in flood numbers around the world, especially in the US, starting mid-2030s. The study, touted to be the first such, takes into account all known oceanic and astronomical causes for floods.
According to the study, every U.S. coast will experience rapidly increasing high-tide floods, when a lunar cycle will amplify rising sea levels caused by climate change. It showed that high tides will exceed known flooding thresholds around the country more often. Further, it claimed that floods will sometimes occur in clusters lasting a month or longer, depending on the positions of the Moon, Earth and the Sun.
“When the Moon and Earth line up in specific ways with each other and the Sun, the resulting gravitational pull and the ocean’s corresponding response may leave city dwellers coping with floods every day or two,” the study noted.
According to NASA administrator Bill Nelson, low-lying areas near sea level are increasingly at risk and suffering due to the increased flooding, and that “it will only get worse”.
“The combination of the Moon’s gravitational pull, rising sea levels, and climate change will continue to exacerbate coastal flooding on our coastlines and across the world. NASA’s Sea Level Change Team is providing crucial information so that we can plan, protect, and prevent damage to the environment and people’s livelihoods affected by flooding,” he said.
If one goes by the words of Phil Thompson, who is an assistant professor at the University of Hawaii and the lead author of the new study, it’s the accumulated effect over time that will have an impact. Thompson pointed out that because high-tide floods involve a small amount of water compared to hurricane storm surges, there’s a tendency to view them as a less significant problem overall. “But if it floods 10 or 15 times a month, a business can’t keep operating with its parking lot under water. People lose their jobs because they can’t get to work. Seeping cesspools become a public health issue.”
MOON – WOBBLE EFFECT
Now, the question is: Why will cities on such widely separated coastlines begin to experience these higher rates of flooding at almost the same time?
According to the study, the main reason is a regular wobble in the Moon’s orbit that takes 18.6 years to complete. The study clarified that there was “nothing new or dangerous” about the wobble. It was first reported in 1728. What’s new is how one of the wobble’s effects on the Moon’s gravitational pull – the main cause of Earth’s tides – will combine with rising sea levels resulting from the planet’s warming.
In half of the Moon’s 18.6-year cycle, Earth’s regular daily tides are suppressed: High tides are lower than normal, and low tides are higher than normal. In the other half of the cycle, tides are amplified: High tides get higher, and low tides get lower. Global sea level rise pushes high tides in only one direction – higher. So half of the 18.6-year lunar cycle counteracts the effect of sea level rise on high tides, and the other half increases the effect, the study explained.
As per the study, the higher seas, amplified by the lunar cycle, will cause a leap in flood numbers on almost all U.S. mainland coastlines, Hawaii, and Guam. Only far northern coastlines, including Alaska’s, will be spared for another decade or longer because these land areas are rising due to long-term geological processes, it said.
The researchers uncovered these tipping points in flood numbers by studying 89 tide gauge locations in every coastal U.S. state and territory but Alaska. They created a new statistical framework that mapped NOAA’s widely used sea level rise scenarios and flooding thresholds, the number of times those thresholds have been exceeded annually, astronomical cycles, and statistical representations of other processes, such as El Niño events, that are known to affect tides. They projected results to 2080.

Google is preparing to launch a big update to its Translate app, adding AI capabilities for better translation accuracy, context, and customization. The new “Ask a Follow-up” button helps users get more precise and personalized translations.
This update brings some amazing new features. After translating, you can tap “Ask a Follow-up” to get extra details about the translation process and subtle language nuances. Plus, you can tweak the tone and style—whether you need something formal, casual, simplified, or region-specific.
You can also listen to pronunciations and rate translations to help improve accuracy. On top of that, there are cultural notes, grammar tips, and insights into regional differences to give you a deeper understanding of the language.
The new features work alongside Google’s Gemini AI. In a demo, the system nailed a request to make a translation “sound funny, like a tech nerd,” showing off its flexibility, as reported by Android Police.
While the feature has been manually enabled in Google Translate version 9.3.78.731229477.7 for Android, it is not yet widely available. Google is expected to announce an official launch once testing is complete.

Microsoft has announced the time of death for Skype. In its push to promote Microsoft Teams, the company has announced that starting May 5, Skype will no longer be available. “In order to streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs, we will be retiring Skype in May 2025 to focus on Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communications and collaboration hub”, Microsoft announced in an official blog post. The company also insists that existing Skype users either migrate or shift their data to the Teams platform.
Microsoft plans to make the transition from Skype to Teams gradual over the next three months. The company has been encouraging this shift since Teams was launched, and in the blog post announcing Skype’s retirement, it emphasised that both platforms offer many of the same features, with Teams providing additional capabilities.
To make this transition easy, Microsoft says Skype users will be able to use their current credentials to log in to Microsoft Teams for free on any supported device. Essentially, Skype users will be able to continue making one-on-one and group calls, sending messages, and sharing files, along with using features like hosting meetings, managing calendars, and joining communities, on Team for free. “By logging in to Teams with a Skype account, chats and contacts will automatically appear in the app so you can quickly pick up where you left off,” says Microsoft. “During the transition period, Teams users can call and chat with Skype users and Skype users can do the same with Teams users”, it adds.
During the transition from Skype to Teams, users have two choices. They can either move to Microsoft Teams for free by logging in with their existing Skype credentials. Once they are signed in, all Skype chats and contacts will automatically transfer to Teams, allowing users to pick up their conversations right where they left off. Alternatively, users who prefer not to migrate can export their Skype data, including chats, contacts, and call history.
In addition to that, users also have the choice to use Skype alongside Teams, which is until May 5. To do that, simply download the Teams app and log in with existing Skype credentials, and find all their existing chats and contacts ready to use.
Notably, Microsoft is discontinuing paid Skype services for new users, including Skype Credit and calling subscriptions. Existing subscribers can use their credit and plans until the end of their next renewal period while remaining Skype Credit will continue to be available. Also, Microsoft says that even after May 5, paid users will still be able to access Skype Dial Pad through the Skype web portal or within Teams.

Instagram alternative Flashes publicly launched its Bluesky-based photo-sharing app on the App Store this week, gaining nearly 30,000 downloads in its first 24 hours. The app offers a classic Instagram-like experience, allowing users to upload up to four photos and videos of up to a minute in length.
Built by Berlin-based developer Sebastian Vogelsang, Flashes runs on the same underlying protocol that powers Bluesky, the AT Protocol (or atproto for short).
Because it’s based on Bluesky, the social networking startup with now over 32 million users, Flashes has access to a built-in audience. That is, all the posts you make on the Flashes app are compatible with Bluesky, meaning they can reach a wider audience beyond those using the Flashes app itself.
While Flashes resembles Instagram in some aspects, it’s more customizable.
Instead of being trapped by an algorithm of the company’s making, people on Flashes can access any of the more than 50,000 custom feeds on Bluesky that let people curate the network’s content however they want. Plus, the app offers built-in feeds for both the top posts and latest posts across Bluesky’s network.
Other features are designed to cater to photographers looking to showcase their work.
A “Portfolio Mode” lets you curate your profile by choosing what media will appear to visitors, for example. That way, you can feature your best photographs up front when people visit your profile.
Posts created in Flashes itself can be edited using built-in photo filters, too, similar to Instagram.
Another new feature focuses on curated feeds from artists.
Flashes is kicking off this recent update with images from the Blacksky community. (Blacksky has been building out Bluesky tools for the Black community, including Blacksky feeds, its own moderation service, and other technical features.)
Vogelsang says he’s had some conversations with investors around funding and is open to opportunities. The app had reached 40,500 downloads as of Thursday and is one of several new efforts building on top of the Bluesky platform.
