We Have Respect For Father Stan Swamy’s Work: Bombay High Court
Hearing the bail application of Elgar Parishad accused Father Stan Swamy after his death, the Bombay high court (HC) said it had great respect for the work of the tribal rights activist. HC judge SS Shinde observed that he was a wonderful person, and hence though they had very little time, he made it a point to attend the online funeral service.
“Swamy’s service was gracious and while the legal matter against Swamy was a different issue, it was not expecting the death of the priest before it passed judgment on the bail application,” he said.
The HC clarified that it had dealt with medical bail applications of Elgar Parishad accused including Swamy, Varavara Rao and Hany Babu on humane consideration by acceding to their request to be transferred to private hospitals of their choices despite vehement opposition from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Maharashtra prison authorities.
The division bench of justice SS Shinde and justice NJ Jamadar, while hearing the application of Swamy, was informed by senior counsel Mihir Desai that he was seeking permission for Fr Frazer Mascarenhas to participate in the magisterial inquiry into the cause of Swamy’s death. Desai submitted that as the process for such inquiries mandated the participation of family members and as Fr Mascarenhas was permitted by the HC to meet Swamy while he was at Holy Family Hospital from May 28 till his death on July 5, he should be allowed to participate in the inquiry as well.
However, NIA through advocate Sandesh Patil opposed continuation of the medical bail plea and said that issues pertaining to the inquiry could not be taken up in the same application, following which the court said it would consider the request of Swamy’s counsel on Friday (July 23).
While referring to the criticism hurled at the HC and NIA for the cause of Swamy’s death, the bench said, “We ensured we remained fair while passing orders on Swamy’s medical bail application as well as the applications filed by the other co-accused in the Elgar Parishad case like P Varavara Rao and Hany Babu by permitting them to be shifted to the hospital of their choice, though there was vehement opposition.”

കൊല്ലം :കിടപ്പ് രോഗികൾക്ക് സാന്ത്വനo ആകുക എന്ന ലക്ഷ്യത്തോടെ എഫ്എം റേഡിയോ കൊല്ലത്ത് പ്രവർത്തനം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു. റേഡിയോ സാന്ത്വനം 90.4 എഫ്എം എന്ന് പേരിട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ സംവിധാനം ഇന്നു മുതൽ പരീക്ഷണ പ്രക്ഷേപണം ആരംഭിക്കും. കൊല്ലത്തെ പെയിൻ ആൻഡ് പാലിയേറ്റീവ് കെയർ ട്രസ്റ്റിന്‍റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലാണ് റേഡിയോ പ്രക്ഷേപണം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. തിരുമുല്ലവാരത്താണ് റേഡിയോ നിലയം സ്ഥാപിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്.സമ്പൂർണ സാങ്കേതിക മികവോടെ ഒരു മാസത്തിനുള്ളിൽ പ്രവർത്തനം പൂർണ സജ്ജമാകും. കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിൽ എല്ലായിടത്തും ഈ റേഡിയോ പ്രക്ഷേപണം ലക്ഷ്യമാകും. കൂടാതെ ഇന്‍റർനെറ്റ്, യൂട്യൂബ് എന്നിവ വഴി ലോകമെമ്പാടും റേഡിയോ പരിപാടികൾ ലഭ്യമാകുമെന്നും സംഘാടകർ അറിയിച്ചു. പാലിയേറ്റീവ് കെയർ രോഗികൾക്കും ബന്ധുക്കൾക്കുമായി അറിവ് പകരുന്ന മെഡിക്കൽ ബുള്ളറ്റിനുകൾ, രോഗികൾക്ക് ലഭ്യമാക്കുന്ന സർക്കാർ സഹായങ്ങൾ, അവർക്ക് ആശ്വാസം പകരുന്ന കലാപരിപാടികൾ തുടങ്ങിയവ റേഡിയോ വഴി ലഭ്യമാക്കും. രോഗികൾക്കും അവരുടെ സന്തോഷം, ആകാംക്ഷ, അഭിപ്രായങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ പങ്കുവയ്ക്കുന്നതിനും റേഡിയോ വഴി അവസരം ഉണ്ടാകും. തുടർന്ന് വാർത്താ വിതരണ പ്രക്ഷേപണ മന്ത്രാലയത്തിന്‍റെ അനുമതിയോടെ കൂടുതൽ പരിപാടികളും ആസൂത്രണം ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്.
Turkey – An underground city was discovered in Turkey and is believed to be the home of roughly 70,000 Christians during the 6th century facing persecution at the time of the Romans.
The underground city was found in Midyat district of Mardin province. Archeologists report finding “places of worship, silos, water wells and passages with corridors”. Gani Tarkan, the head of excavations, “It was first built as a hiding place or escape area. As it is known, Christianity was not an official religion in the second century. Families and groups who accepted Christianity generally took shelter in underground cities to escape the persecution of Rome or formed an underground city.”
Only about 3 to 5 percent of the city is unearthed but efforts are being made to excavate the entire city. It is believed to be the largest of its kind and is among more than 40 other cities discovered in Turkey. Derinkuyu, another famous underground city, could hold around 20,000 people and was used to hide Christians and Jews between the 8th and 12th centuries.
Midyat is considered “almost an open-air museum” because of its rich history including churches and monasteries.
