Afghanistan war: Biden says he does not regret troop withdrawal

Published

on

Mr Biden urged Afghanistan’s leaders to unite and “fight for their nation”.

A US-led military campaign began in 2001 following the 9/11 attacks on American soil – but now most of the foreign troops have pulled out.

The Taliban group has now seized nine of the country’s 34 provincial capitals, and are threatening more.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, Mr Biden said the US was keeping the commitments it had made to Afghanistan, such as providing close air support, paying military salaries and supplying Afghan forces with food and equipment.

But he said: “They’ve got to fight for themselves.”

The Washington Post cited unnamed officials as saying the capital Kabul could fall to the Taliban within 90 days, based on US military assessments.

More than 1,000 civilians have been killed amid fierce fighting between the Taliban and government forces in the past month, according to the UN. Its children’s agency Unicef warned this week that atrocities being committed against children were growing “higher by the day”.

In their latest major advances, Taliban militants seized three more provincial capitals in 24 hours – Faizabad, Farah and Pul-e-Khumri.

Officials said that on Tuesday the insurgents had raised their flag in the main square and on the governor’s office in Pul-e-Khumri, the capital of Baghlan province, which is located about 200km (125 miles) from Kabul.

A local journalist and provincial council member told the BBC that the western city of Farah had fallen.

And on Wednesday, the Taliban claimed to have taken Faizabad in the north-west of the country.

Other gains by the militant group this week include the key northern city of Kunduz. It is considered a gateway to mineral-rich provinces and is in a strategically important location close to the border with Tajikistan, which is used for the smuggling of opium and heroin.

Heavy fighting is continuing in other parts of the country, and US and Afghan planes have been carrying out airstrikes.

On Wednesday Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani flew to Mazar-i-Sharif in an apparent drive to rally the defenders in the key northern city which is now threatened by the militants.

Thousands of people have been fleeing their homes in recent days.

“We saw bodies lying near the prison… there were dogs next to them,” one woman who left Kunduz as the Taliban took control told AFP news agency.

Residents still in the city said shops had begun to reopen as Taliban militants focused their attention on government forces who had retreated to the airport.

“People are opening their shops and businesses, but you can still see fear in their eyes,” one said.

The Taliban have rejected international calls for a ceasefire.

UK Chief of the Defence Staff Gen Sir Nick Carter told the BBC that if the Afghan state fractured, the “ideal conditions” could emerge for international terrorism and violent extremism.

Proposed Senate Resolution Recognizes Persecution of Christians

Published

on

United States — The United States Senate could soon pass S.Res.52, a resolution that reaffirms religious freedom as a fundamental human right globally. Introduced in early February by Senator James Lankford (R-OK), the legislation expresses concern over the escalating global threats to religious liberty. Unfortunately, Christians have faced the brunt of this persecution, with an average of 13 believers being killed every day because of their faith.

S.Res.52 highlights several countries where religious minorities, including Christians, face significant challenges to practicing their faith.

In Afghanistan, the Taliban has enforced its “harsh interpretation of Sharia law,” and those who do not adhere face imprisonment or death if discovered. In China, the government uses “targeted surveillance to monitor, harass, and detain” Christians and other religious minorities for exercising their beliefs. In the Sahel region of Africa, violent extremist groups have threatened “violence against Christians who do not convert to Islam.”

If passed, S.Res.52 would also signal for international religious freedom to become a foreign policy priority for the United States.

Currently, the resolution is before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, where it must be presented by Chairman Senator Jim Risch (R-ID) and Ranking Member Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) before advancing to the full Senate. International Christian Concern’s (ICC) Advocacy team encourages Christians in the U.S. to contact both senators, urging them to swiftly bring this crucial resolution before the committee.

‘God Was Exalted’: 4,500 Students Seek Jesus at Purdue University, Thousands Saved

Published

on

Thousands of college students are giving Jesus their “Yes” once again after making decisions to accept Christ as their Savior, a college campus ministry reports.

The third UniteUS event of 2025 took place at Purdue University Wednesday night and more than 4,500 students gathered to hear the gospel and be transformed.

The founder and visionary behind UniteUS, Tonya Prewett, summed up what took place saying, “God was exalted at Purdue University!!”

By the end of the night, nearly half of those who attended confessed Jesus as the Savior and some took part in water baptisms afterward.

“From the moment we stepped on campus we knew God was going to move in a special way tonight,” the group wrote on Instagram.

“4,500 students gathered in Elliott Hall of Music and we were blown away seeing how the students leaned in during worship. We still can’t get over seeing nearly half the students in attendance flood the altar to give Jesus their ‘yes,'” the post continued.

UniteUS is a ministry that’s been making waves on college campuses across the country for several years now.

At the start of the year, 8,000 students gathered at the University of Kentucky’s Rupp Arena to worship Jesus and hear a powerful message on the Gospel.

Then, an Ohio State revival event saw 6,500 students gather in The Schott where almost 2,000 attendees responded to the altar call.

During the outreaches, Prewett is often joined by Pastor Jonathan Pokluda and founder of the IF:Gathering, Jennie Allen.

Pokluda previously told CBN News many students are coming to these gatherings ready to shed their past mistakes.

“They’re coming in with guilt and shame. STDs, unwanted pregnancies, abortions,” Pokluda said. “And they come here and we’re showing them the one—the only one—who can really deal with their sin, is Jesus Christ.”

UniteUS was birthed out of a desire to “lift the name of Jesus,” and it gained rapid momentum after its initial outreach at Auburn University’s Neville Arena in September 2023 where 5,000 students showed up to worship Jesus and 200 were spontaneously baptized in a nearby lake.

The evangelistic college campus movement is marked by salvations, water baptisms, and worship, and it’s beginning to garner national attention, but Prewett says it is all about sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

She told CBN News last year that it is truly “a move of God.”

“I’m not capable of doing this, we’re not capable of doing this, it’s the hand of God. It’s way bigger than us,” Prewett explained.

After their first outreach this year, Allen commented, “It’s hard to believe. This keeps happening. It is insane.”

And the same rang true last night after another massive response.

Students joined Allen as she baptized dozens in tubs.

“Thousands came forward to receive Christ,” she said in a social media post Thursday morning. “They want God everywhere we go.”

Purdue sophomore, Anna Suppes, is a part of the planning team and told Fox59 that the movement on campus began with prayer.

“It started with five people praying and it grew to 200,” she shared.

Tre Henson told the outlet he hopes this movement sparks a lasting change on Purdue’s campus.

“Purdue is a very academic campus and it is very easy for people to feel lonely or anxious. So we are trying to plug people into the community and let them know that they are seen and loved. And also spread the gospel and the truth,” he explained.

The next UniteUS outreach will be held at West Virginia University on March 11. Since September of 2023, the ministry’s events have reached more than 100,000 college students across multiple campuses.
