‘Pray for Jack’: Badly Injured NFL Player Trusts in God; ‘My Faith in God Has Never Been Stronger’
An NFL player who suffered a frightening injury on the field Sunday is making progress and publicly leaning on his faith during his life-changing ordeal.
Jack Campbell, a linebacker for the Detroit Lions, suffered a neck injury while making a tackle during Sunday’s game.
As he lay motionless on the field, medical personnel put him on a backboard and took him off the field and to a hospital.
After the game, the Lions’ coach spoke to his teammates in the locker room. “We do not know anything else at this point. So here’s what I want to do, man… We’re gonna take a knee and pray for Jack.”
Wednesday, Campbell put out a statement announcing he has full movement in his lower body and is making progress with movement in his upper body.
He thanked everyone who has stood by him for their love, prayers, and support.
“My faith in God has never been stronger. I know He has a plan for me, and I trust in that plan. I know there may be challenges ahead, but with my faith, my family, and so many people in my corner, I know we’ll get through this,” he said.
Campbell went on to thank the athletic trainers and medical personnel, as well as the team at Henry Ford Hospital, who have taken care of him on and off the field, during and after the injury.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the professionalism, compassion, and care you showed me. The way you handled everything and looked after me when I needed it most is something I’ll never forget. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
“…Please continue to keep me and my family in your prayers. We feel the love, and I can’t thank everyone enough.

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott Says God’s at Center of Team Culture: ‘That’s Who I Am’
On the heels of a win against the Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said faith is at the core of his team’s culture. He told reporters he and his teammates know “we’re all here because of God.”
Prescott, 33, said he and his fellow players are “all here to serve a greater purpose,” according to The Comeback.
The athlete credited Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer with establishing a faith-filled culture on the team.
“I’ve been through so much in my life,” said Prescott. “God’s always been the reason and, yeah, who I fall back on and my refuge, as I say. I can’t thank Him enough and never will be able to thank Him enough and just to see that transcend throughout our team, starting with our head coach, is special. It’s something that we take pride in.”
It’s clear Schottenheimer has embraced a celebration of faith on the team — both behind the scenes and in front of the cameras.
Cowboys cornerback Ameer Speed’s mother prayed over her son right before the team’s game against the Texans. In a clip of the powerful moment, Aricka Spencer is seen leaning over the railing in the stadium and placing her hand on Speed’s head as she held his hand and prayed for him.
Prescott gave reporters a window into why he and his teammates are so open about their trust in God. He said the players are seeking to “be contagious” in their bold expressions of faith.
The motivation, he said, is about “opening your perspective up when things happen, win, lose or draw,” and asking God what His “purpose” is for wherever He’s placed you in life.
“We know what God wants us to do in our response and that’s being the best versions of ourselves, serving Him, serving others,” Prescott explained.
He continued, “We may not always have the answers for it, but we know what God wants us to do in our response, and that’s be the best versions of ourselves, serving Him, serving others and doing it with just pure love. I’m thankful for this team.”
Prescott also credited Jonathan and Dr. Tony Evans, both of whom serve as chaplains for the Dallas team.
The quarterback’s comments about his faith came after the Cowboys rallied from a double-digit deficit to emerge victorious against Houston with a final score of 34-30.

Football Team Under Fire for Reciting ‘Lord’s Prayer’
The Freedom From Religion Foundation is once again rattling the gates of a Tennessee public school—this time demanding that football coaches stop praying with their players.
The Wisconsin-based atheist organization sent a Sept. 2 complaint to attorneys for Robertson County Schools accusing coaches at White House Heritage High School and Middle School of unconstitutional religious activity.
According to the letter, an unidentified parent told FFRF that coaches pray with players after practices and before and after games, including reciting the Lord’s Prayer. The organization also alleges that one of the high school coaches brings Christian speakers to team events and that coaches encourage players to attend Fellowship of Christian Athletes meetings.
FFRF says the parent reported that “some students fear being penalized for not reciting the Lord’s Prayer.” The allegation has not been independently verified:
“Here, the football coaches seem to have crossed the constitutional line by leading students in the Lord’s Prayer while acting in their official capacities as school employees, bringing in outside adults to proselytize players, and promoting attendance at a Christian club. Student-athletes are especially susceptible to coercion, and the relationship between student-athletes and their coaches is inherently coercive. Students know that their coaches control their positions on the team, including who plays in each game.”
The atheist group demanded that Robertson County Schools “immediately stop proselytizing and leading football players in prayer.”
FFRF Co-President Annie Laurie Gaylor went even further, declaring there should be no “‘pray to play’ practices” in public-school athletics.
“Public school coaches have enormous authority over their players, and they cannot use that authority to pressure students to pray or attend religious athletic clubs,” Gaylor said. “There should be no ‘pray to play’ practices or other overstepping of the professional boundary between coaches and vulnerable public school students. Robertson County Schools must ensure that participation in athletics does not come with a religious test.”
For the record, the complaint is just that—a complaint, not a court ruling.
FFRF acknowledges the Supreme Court’s 2022 Kennedy v. Bremerton decision protected a public-school football coach’s private postgame prayer, but argues the Robertson County allegations are different because coaches allegedly lead students in prayer while acting as school employees.
The out-of-town atheists would rather players listen to profanity-laced rap music than “The Lord’s Prayer.”
