Christian Couple Accused of Blasphemy Win Bail in Pakistan

Published

on

Pakistan – A court in Lahore, Pakistan on Wednesday (Oct. 18) granted bail to a Christian couple arrested last month on blasphemy charges, a rare occurrence in a country where falsely accused suspects spend years in jail awaiting verdicts.

Zahid Nazeer, attorney for Shaukat Masih and his wife Kiran Shaukat, said Additional Sessions Judge Lahore Mian Shahid Javed granted his petition for bail on Oct. 18, enabling their release from jail on Saturday (Oct. 21).

“We have been away from our children for over a month, and each day we spent in prison was spent thinking what would become of them if we couldn’t get out,” Masih, who supports his family by doing odd jobs, told Morning Star News.

Nazeer said he told the court that the impoverished couple was innocent as they were not present at the site at the time of the alleged incident.

“Moreover, Section 295-B clearly states that there has to be clear intent in committing the said crime, whereas in this case there was no evidence that showed that the couple had committed the alleged act deliberately or willfully,” Nazeer told Morning Star News.

The couple were arrested and charged under Section 295-B of the blasphemy statutes after a local Muslim accused them of throwing torn pages of the Koran from the roof of their house on Sept. 8. Section 295-B of the Pakistan Penal Code carries a mandatory life sentence for desecrating the Koran.

The complainant, Muhammad Taimur, claimed that he saw the pages flying towards the ground while he was at a nearby shop. He went to the house and confronted Kiran Shaukat, who said that her children might have done it, according to the First Information Report (FIR). He then searched the house and found a pink school bag behind a water tank on the roof, which contained more torn pages.

Nazeer said the torn pages were not from the Koran but from a Grade 9 Islamic Studies book in a bag containing scrap paper meant to be sold to a scrap vendor.

“The couple has three minor children, two of whom are suffering from mental and physical disabilities, and they also can’t be held accountable for desecration of the holy pages,” Nazeer told Morning Star News. “None of the three children have ever been to school, so it’s absurd to even claim that they tore off the pages intentionally.”

The lawyer said there were other indications that police showed undue haste in registering the FIR against the couple.

“The police did not recover the alleged evidence itself, rather it was handed to them by the complainant. Therefore, there’s a high chance of tampering with the evidence,” he said.

Nazeer added that the judge granted bail to the couple on a bail bond of 100,000 Pakistani rupees (US$360) each. The judge also observed that the case required further inquiry, he said.

Beaten in their Home

At the office of local humanitarian organization HARDS Pakistan, the couple said they couldn’t thank God enough for their release from jail and reunion with their children.

Masih said he was working at a car service station when the alleged incident took place, and that he was surprised to see a crowd gathered outside his house when he returned home that day.

“As soon as I entered the building, some men started beating me up, calling me a blasphemer,” Masih told Morning Star News. “They also beat my wife, paying no attention to our pleas that we had no idea about the alleged crime.”

Someone then called the police, who took them and their children into custody, he said.

“They even arrested a Muslim couple who were our guests,” he said.

The couple’s employer is a kind Muslim man in Britain who pays them to take care of his property where the couple’s family was occupying one of its rooms, he said.

“We have been living there for over a year, but now we will not be going back to that area,” Masih said. “We don’t feel safe.”

His wife echoed similar concerns for her family’s security as she narrated how the complainant and other Muslims had forced their entry into the house and manhandled her.

“I was working in the house of my employer’s sister who lives in the same street when this incident happened,” Kiran Shaukat said. “The group of men forced me to open the gate of our house and stormed inside while pushing me away and hurling abuses.”

She said she had no idea about the presence of the koranic verses in the plastic bag.

“The bag was given to me by my employer’s sister to sell to some scrap vendor,” she said. “I honestly didn’t know it contained material that could put us in such great risk.”

She expressed gratitude for HARDS Pakistan Chief Executive Sohail Habel taking good care of their three children, ages 13, 9 and 7, while she and her husband were incarcerated.

In a similar case, a local court in Arifwala in May released on bail a Christian woman charged with blasphemy after she was accused of burning papers containing koranic verses. Musarrat Bibi worked at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in 66-EB village, Arifwala tehsil of Pakpattan District. On April 15, she and a Muslim gardener were told to clean the school’s storeroom that was filled with paper and other scrapped items.

The duo reportedly gathered the wasted paper and other scraps in a corner of the school and set them on fire. Some students later noticed that the burnt items also contained koranic pages and protested against the alleged desecration.

Her attorney said school staff members, including principal Nasreen Saeed, were aware that Musarrat Bibi and a gardener identified as Sarmad had not burned koranic pages intentionally. Police, however, arrested the two people and charged them with blasphemy.

Pakistan ranked seventh on Open Doors’ 2023 World Watch List of the most difficult places to be a Christian, up from eighth the previous year.

Christians Call for Unity, Support Amid Growing Tensions with Fulani Extremists

Published

on

Nigeria— On Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Jan. 15, Chief Daniel Chega, the Paramount Ruler of Miango District in Plateau state, Nigeria, said he is actively working toward enhancing security for the area’s Christian community.

In a recent discussion with International Christian Concern (ICC), Chief Chega emphasized the community’s resilience in the wake of a tragic incident involving Adamu Agash, a dedicated local vigilante officer killed by suspected Fulani extremists while tending to his farm in Nzharivo Village. This attack occurred despite the presence of Nigerian soldiers in the area.

The attack, which also left three farmers injured, has ignited a significant call for justice and the implementation of improved security measures. During a recent peaceful demonstration led by Rigwe women, participants, including elderly women, voiced their collective determination to seek positive change and advocate for a safer environment for all. Protesters decried the soldiers’ inaction and demanded the departure of both Fulani herders and the military from their communities. However, the demonstration was met with tear gas, and some women, including a pregnant participant, were reportedly mistreated.

In a makeshift clinic in Nzharivo, 30-year-old farmer Zibe Joseph recounted an attack by five machete-wielding assailants on his farm. According to clinic officer Danjuma Audu, the facility has treated more than 20 victims of violence since 2020 despite severe medication shortages.

The Rigwe Chiefdom, spanning Plateau and Southern Kaduna, has faced ongoing attacks since 2016, with more than 2,000 residents killed. The violence has disproportionately affected Christian farming communities, including minority Christian Fulani tribespeople.

Community leaders criticized the military’s response to the violence. His Royal Highness the Rev. Ronku Aka (Rtd) condemned Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), a military task force, for perceived bias, highlighting the swift arrests of Rigwe individuals compared to the impunity granted to herders involved in farm destruction and violent attacks. Ronku Aka urged Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to ensure justice and called for the release of detained Rigwe individuals to allow for impartial investigations.

Human rights activist Gata Moses added, “The military has done little to earn the community’s trust, instead perpetuating negligence and abuse.” He emphasized the need to uphold the 2022 peace agreement and foster dialogue to restore regional stability.

As the Rigwe people mourn the loss of Mr. Agash, community leaders urge calm and resilience while appealing for decisive action to address the escalating violence.

“Justice is non-negotiable for my people,” Ronku Aka stated, emphasizing the importance of accountability to maintain peace in Rigwe Chiefdom.

Christian twin brothers acquitted of blasphemy charges in Pakistan

Published

on

Pakistan — A court in Pakistan acquitted Christian twin brothers of a false blasphemy accusation as the prosecution failed to prove charges against them, their attorney said.

Kasur Additional Sessions Judge Farzana Shahzad ordered that 18-year-olds Sahil Shahid (known as Kalu) and Raheel Shahid (known as Tabish), be released from prison after their defense team proved they had been falsely charged and that police had failed to properly investigate, said attorney Javed Sahotra.

During cross-examination of eight witnesses, including the investigating officer and the complainant, Sahotra asked if any of them could identify which quranic passage or verses had allegedly been desecrated by the brothers of Qulay Wala village in Kasur District, Punjab Province.

“Neither the IO nor any other witness was able to respond to my question, which shows that the evidence that they had submitted against the brothers had been fabricated,” Sahotra told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News. “Admitting my arguments, the honorable judge ordered the release of the twins and issued a notice to the Kasur district police officer to start an inquiry against the IO for conducting a weak investigation.”

Sahotra said he argued that Inspector Muhammad Saleem of Kasur Saddar Police Station was not qualified to investigate the case.

“Though Saleem is serving as an inspector, he has only obtained higher secondary education and is unable to read or understand the Arabic language,” he said.

The twins have been released from prison and have reunited with their family, he added.

The defense team also informed the court that the brothers had been falsely charged with the aim of instilling fear in Christians and forcing them to leave the village.

“We believe that this case was a conspiracy against the Christian residents so that vested interests could grab their land and properties,” Sahotra said. “However, timely intervention of the police and our successful defense of the victims scuttled their nefarious designs.”

The Shahid brothers were arrested and charged with blasphemy on Aug. 27, 2024, after they were accused of tearing pages of the Quran. Desecrating the Quran carries a life sentence in Muslim-majority Pakistan, but intent must be proven for a conviction.

The complainant, Ghulam Mustafa, alleged in the First Information Report (FIR) that on Aug. 26, 2024, the brothers had desecrated quranic pages at a local village fair.

The brothers are illiterate and belong to a poor family, rights activist Sajid Christopher previously told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News, adding that family members surrendered them to police after officials took their mother and an uncle into custody.

Blasphemy Law amendments urged

Expressing alarm over an increase in false blasphemy accusations in Pakistan, the U.N. Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) on Nov. 7, 2024, urged repeal or amending of the country’s widely condemned blasphemy laws.

The committee noted that false blasphemy accusations led to Islamist mob violence and recommended amending the laws in accordance with requirements of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). In its concluding observations of the committee’s second periodic report on Pakistan, it stated concern over sections 295 and 298 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which carry severe penalties, including the death penalty, and have a disproportionate impact on religious minorities.

“It is also concerned about the increasing number of persons incarcerated under blasphemy charges, the high number of blasphemy cases based on false accusations, violence against those accused of blasphemy, fostering vigilante justice, and allegations of entrapment of persons, in particular young persons, on accusations of on-line blasphemy under cybercrime laws,” the committee stated.

It emphasized ending use of cybercrime laws, such as the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, to prosecute and detain those accused of breaching blasphemy laws online. The committee also urged the government to investigate allegations of massive abuse of blasphemy laws in connection with cybercrime laws and publish the results of the inquiries.

“[The committee] is also concerned about the chilling effect that criminal defamation laws, blasphemy, sedition and counter-terrorism laws, and other recently passed legislation have on the exercise of freedom of expression by journalists, activists, human rights defenders and members of ethnic and religious minorities,” it stated.

Urging Pakistan to take all necessary measures to guarantee prompt and fair trials for all persons charged with blasphemy or other offenses against religion, the committee highlighted jail conditions, stating that it was “also concerned about reports of abuse of women prisoners, including sexual violence, and that individuals accused of blasphemy are often placed in solitary confinement for extended periods of time. It remains concerned about the widespread recourse to prolonged pretrial detention.”

Pakistan ranked eighth on Open Doors’ 2025 World Watch List of the most difficult places to be a Christian.
