Lee Strobel, Greg Laurie and Kay Arthur honored with Museum of the Bible’s 2023 Pillar Awards
WASHINGTON — Three influential Christians have been honored for exposing the Bible, “the greatest story of all time” to “millions of people.”
The second annual Pillar Awards was held at the Museum of the Bible on Saturday, where three Christian leaders were recognized for “reaching the world through the Bible’s message.” The Pillar Awards were part of the museum’s 2023 Gala & Experience, titled “The Story.” In a video message shared at the ceremony, Christian songwriter Matthew West alluded to the significance behind the event’s title, referring to the Bible as “the greatest story of all time.”
Dave Stotts, who has traveled the world to show people the actual locations recorded in the Gospels in a series of educational videos called “Drive Through History,” hosted the ceremony. As Stotts explained, the Pillar Awards refer to the pillars that underpin the Museum of the Bible: history, narrative and impact.
“Those same pillars are the foundation for the creation of the Pillar Awards,” he said. “We launched it last year to honor individuals and groups who are leveraging those pillars to engage people with the transformative power of the Bible through their talents, ideas and platforms.” He praised this year’s Pillar Award recipients as “three individuals who have literally impacted the Christian faith stories of millions of people.”
Abby Robertson of The Christian Broadcasting Network presented the awards to the recipients, whom she described as “three of the most influential Christian leaders in the country,” and interviewed them on stage. In addition to the video message from West and the interviews with awardees, the ceremony featured a performance by Christian musician CeCe Wynans.
Lee Strobel, former journalist and the author of The Case for Christ, received the Pillar Award for history. Stotts outlined how this honor is reserved by those “who reinforce the Bible’s history by discovering, preserving and communicating the authenticity of God’s Word to the world.” The publication of The Case for Christ followed Strobel’s effort to disprove the existence of Jesus Christ, with his discoveries resulting in him embracing and converting to Christianity.
Strobel reflected on his experience as he accepted the award on stage: “I was an atheist for much of my life, and I lived a very immoral and drunken and narcissistic and profane life. And I never could have anticipated first of all coming to faith. I thought religion was a crutch that it was based on make-believe.”
“I thought faith was believing something even though you knew in your heart it couldn’t be true,” he added. He attributed his initial quest to refute the existence of Jesus Christ to his wife’s conversion to Christianity after meeting their new neighbor, who invited her to church.
Strobel said: “I thought maybe I could rescue her from this cult that she’s gotten involved in if I could just disprove the resurrection of Jesus. And so, I took my journalism training and legal training and spent two years trying to do that and coming to conclude that based on the avalanche of evidence that points so powerfully toward the truth of Christianity, it would take more faith to maintain my atheism than to become a Christian.”
“God changed my values, my character, my morality, my worldview, my philosophy, my attitudes, my marriage, my parenting, my relationships,” he recalled. “I never could have anticipated what God would do, and so I give Him all the glory.”
Following his conversion, Strobel gave up his journalism career to focus on advancing the Christian faith. He worked as a teaching pastor at three American Christian churches and hosted the television program “Faith Under Fire.” Strobel has written several books since The Case for Christ, including The Case for Heaven.
Pastor Greg Laurie received the Pillar Award for narrative. As Stotts noted, the honor is reserved for “those who have brought the stories of the Bible to life through cultural mediums.” Laurie leads Harvest Christian Fellowship, a multi-site congregation of 15,000 in California and Hawaii, with a weekly virtual service that attracts over 100,000 viewers. His story of conversion became the subject of the film “Jesus Revolution,” released earlier this year.
Laurie converted to Christianity as part of the “Jesus Movement” that spread throughout southern California half a century ago. He told Robertson, “I didn’t realize I’d walked smack dab into the middle of a spiritual awakening,” which he referred to as “the Fourth Great Awakening in American History.”
Laurie’s efforts to convert people to Christianity continue to this day, and he sees “Jesus Revolution” as a powerful instrument for evangelization: “We want to reach unexpected people in unexpected places with an unexpected message. So when you have a film on Netflix, you’re playing on Delta Airlines as ‘Jesus Revolution’ has been playing or on other platforms like Apple and Amazon, you reach people that would not necessarily go to church.”
“Jesus did not say the whole world should go to church, but He did say the church should go to the whole world, so we’re always looking for creative ways to get to people,” he added. “A lot of times as Christians, we want to isolate from culture, but in reality, we need to permeate and infiltrate culture with the message of the Gospel.”
Kay Arthur received the Pillar Award for impact. Stotts identified the purpose of this award as to recognize “individuals who have made a significant kingdom impact on many lives through their lifetime of dedication to sharing the Bible’s message.” Arthur, a Bible teacher, has authored over 100 books and Bible studies.
Arthur has been inducted into the National Religious Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame. The awards ceremony took place on her 90th birthday. At the dinner preceding the awards ceremony, attendees sang “Happy Birthday” to her.
“I cannot believe that this is happening on my birthday,” she said. “I feel totally inadequate, but I will tell you one thing. I was raised with a religion without a relationship.”
While Arthur was “baptized” and “confirmed,” she told the audience that she had become “immoral and had sunk into a pit that I dug with my own hands.” She pointed to the day that her first husband died by suicide as the “day when God brought me face to face with all of this.”
“There’s one thing that’s my life, and that’s the Word of God,” she proclaimed. She detailed how, after her conversion, she “wanted everybody to know and to understand God’s Word.” Her organization, Precept Ministries, has shared the Word of God with 190 of the world’s 206 countries.

WASHINGTON — Religious freedom activists are encouraging Americans to learn from Christians who live in countries where they face persecution or death for their faith and develop a willingness to “follow Jesus no matter the cost.”
The fourth annual March for the Martyrs was held in the nation’s capital on Saturday. The event, which drew dozens of people to the National Mall, seeks to raise awareness of the plight of persecuted Christians worldwide. Following a rally featuring worship music and speeches from religious freedom activists, participants marched through the streets to the Museum of the Bible.
“What we’re really excited about is how many Christians from all denominations come together,” For the Martyrs founder Gia Chacón said in an interview with The Christian Post shortly before the event kicked off. “This is not just an event for Evangelicals or Baptists; this is an event for everyone who professes Jesus Christ as Lord, and that’s what we’re most excited about.”
“Christian persecution is a human rights issue, so not only are we coming together in prayer as the Body of Christ, but we hope to bring this … crisis to the forefront of the fight for human rights and demand action from the United States government in protecting Christians all over the world,” she added. “The spiritual component of the March for the Martyrs should not be underestimated. It is so powerful when Christians come together as one voice in prayer and to uplift human dignity and advocate for human rights.”
Chacón said March for the Martyrs is one way to advocate for “religious freedom and the protection of our brothers and sisters who are suffering for their faith in Christ.” During remarks delivered on stage, she elaborated on the hostile atmosphere Christians face in other parts of the world: “In places throughout the Middle East, Christians are suffering every day for their faith. Laying down their life is something that’s normal, not a rare occurrence.”
“Christian persecution has increased by 100 million people” since the first March for the Martyrs took place in 2020, Chacón lamented. “There are now over 365 million Christians around the world who are facing persecution because of their faith in Christ.”
uring her speech, Chacón recalled a conversation she had with Egyptian Christians who lost loved ones as a result of Christian persecution: “They said, ‘We’re so proud of them, we’re so proud of them that Jesus meant everything to them.’”
“We need that witness here in the United States,” Chacón asserted. “We need the courage to lay down our life, to follow Jesus no matter the cost.”
Other speakers at the event echoed Chacón’s call for the American Christians to embrace a stronger Christian witness. Simone Rizkallah, the director of education for the Philos Project, quoted a response from an Eastern Catholic religious leader to a Westerner who asked, “what can we do to help” Christians in Iraq, Syria and other countries who found themselves under attack by the Islamic State terrorist group. The patriarch replied, “be happy.”
“What he meant by saying ‘be happy’ is to so much embody the glory of God, to so much embody and reflect and witness to Christian joy that our sacrifices in the East don’t feel like they’re sacrificed in vain when it comes to the Body of Christ,” Rizkallah said, suggesting throughout her remarks that Christians in the U.S. lack that kind of zeal.
Rizkallah agreed with the conclusion reached by Mother Teresa that “the poorest country” was the U.S. “because of the poverty of loneliness.” The religious freedom activist suggested that the loneliness noticed by the late spiritual leader stems from the fact that “the United States has forgotten God, it has forgotten Jesus, it has forgotten its roots.”
As the granddaughter of Armenians who escaped to Egypt amid the Armenian Genocide, Rizkallah said her parents came to the United States before she was born. While she expressed gratitude for “the economic prosperity and the religious freedom that this country provides,” she lamented that “something spiritually was lost when we became Americans.”
Rizkallah said she was disgusted by the fact that her classmates at the Catholic high school she attended “didn’t care about the faith.”
“I thought to myself, isn’t it interesting that you’re finally free to practice your faith and when you’re finally free, you don’t care anymore,” she added.
Another speaker, Christian speaker and media personality Christian Trimino, elaborated on how visiting the dictatorship of Cuba in 2016 changed his perspective on life: “You have these people who have so much joy. You have beautiful architecture, classic cars, amazing food and despite what their living conditions were, when you talk to these people, they’re all so full of joy and they’re all so happy.”
“When you look at Western culture, we live in a world right now where we’re contrasting the United States with a lot of these other countries and one word that comes to mind is ‘comfortability,’” he contended. Trimino contrasted what he viewed as the prevailing mindset in the U.S., where people don’t “want to do anything that’s against their immediate comfort” with the philosophy of Christians in Cuba and other hotbeds of religious persecution.
“You have people who are literally being killed just for saying that they believe in Jesus. You have people that are being forced out of their homes. You have people that are being forced out of their countries. You have people who are being tortured, being separated from families all because they don’t want to … go against Jesus.”
Trimino suggested that Americans can learn a lesson from “our brothers and sisters who are persecuted around the world” who have “such a real relationship with Jesus.” He detailed how these people have adopted a philosophy that “you can take my home, you can take my business, you can take my reputation, you can take my money, you can take my wife, you can take my husband, you can take my kids, I’ll even give you my life, but the one thing that you cannot take from me is my Jesus.”
He further insisted that Americans have an obligation to “take the freedom that we have in the United States and to be grateful for it and to steward it well, to use our freedom to come to events like this, to start organizations like Gia started, and to actually make positive change and to stand for and to fight and to say, ‘Thank you, Jesus, that we have the opportunity that you have placed us in this time and in this place to make global change around the world.’”

നാഷണൽ ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ ഫോർ അമേരിക്കൻ പോളിസി (NFAP) പുറത്തുവിട്ട റിപ്പോർട്ടിലാണ് ഇക്കാര്യം വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിട്ടുള്ളത്. അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഇമിഗ്രേഷൻ നിയമങ്ങൾ കാനഡയേക്കാൾ കൂടുതൽ കർശനമാണ് എന്നതാണ് വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളെ ഇക്കാര്യത്തിന് പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. അമേരിക്കയിൽ എച്ച്-1ബി വിസ നേടാനും പെര്മനന്റ് റസിഡൻസ് നേടാനും അത്ര എളുപ്പമല്ല. എന്നാൽ കാനഡയിൽ താൽക്കാലികമായി ജോലി ചെയ്യാനും പെര്മനന്റ് റസിഡൻസ് നേടാനും എളുപ്പമാണ് എന്ന് റിപ്പോർട്ടിൽ പറയുന്നു

2010/11 അധ്യയന വർഷത്തിൽ 9000-നടുത്ത് വിദ്യാര്ഥികള് മാത്രമാണ് കനേഡിയൻ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റികളിൽ പഠിക്കാനെത്തിയത്. പത്തുവർഷങ്ങൾ പിന്നിടുമ്പോൾ ഇത് 2021-ൽ ഇത് 128,928 ആണ്. വിദ്യാര്ഥികള് അമേരിക്കയേക്കാൾ കാനഡയെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നതിന് കാരണങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചും കഴിഞ്ഞ വർഷങ്ങളിൽ ഇരു രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്കെത്തിയ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെ എണ്ണത്തെയും വിശദമായി റിപ്പോർട്ടിൽ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.
ജനുവരിയിൽ അടുത്ത രണ്ടു വർഷത്തേക്ക് അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെ കാര്യത്തിൽ കാനഡ പരിധി നിശ്ചയിച്ചിരുന്നു. സപ്തംബറിൽ ആദ്യമായി താൽക്കാലിക റസിഡൻസി നൽകുന്ന കാര്യത്തിൽ കാനഡ പരിധി കൊണ്ടുവരികയാണ്. ഇത് വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിനെ എങ്ങനെ ബാധിക്കുമെന്ന കാര്യം കണ്ടറിയേണ്ടതാണ്. ഇന്ത്യയും കാനഡയും തമ്മിലുണ്ടായ നയതന്ത്രവിഷയങ്ങളും ഇക്കാര്യത്തിൽ വിദ്യാര്ഥികളുടെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിനെ ബാധിച്ചേക്കും.
