7 Christian Families Banned from Odisha Village
India — Seven families who left their tribal religion to become Christians were evicted from a forested village in south Odisha last month.
Forced out by the tribal village council, the families are now without proper food or shelter and are facing the brunt of the heavy monsoon season in India.
Although the incident occurred in June, the news only recently became public, as the village is deep in the forest areas of the district of Malkangiri in Odisha.
Christian workers and pastors are providing some relief materials to the seven families. A member of one of the families recorded a small video on their phone and shared it on social media.
In the video, a man shares how his family became Christians five years ago and how the non-Christian village members used to harass them to return to their tribal faith. He added that his family and the other families are in danger because of their professed faith in Christ, and he asked for prayer.
In June this year, villagers beat up members of the Christian families and threw their belongings out in the rain, which destroyed them. The villagers also threatened to kill the Christians if they returned to the village.
Speaking to International Christian Concern (ICC), Pastor Digal said that after receiving the news of the eviction, they complained to the local police, who did not take any action. They then appealed to the district superintendent of police, who directed the local police to act.
Still, no authorities have taken any action.
Pastor Digal said Hindu fanatic groups pushed the tribal village council to evict the Christian families. Often, Christians are only allowed to stay in Hindu villages if they agree, under pressure, to give donations to festivals for local gods and goddesses and worship them.
When they don’t, things turn violent.
“In Odisha, we now have the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holding the seat of power from June 2024 onwards,” Pastor Digal said. “Such incidents will increase now.”

തിരുവല്ല: സാമ്പത്തീക പ്രതിസന്ധിയുടെ പേരിൽ ന്യൂനപക്ഷ വിദ്യാർഥികളുടെ സ്കോളർഷിപ്പ് വെട്ടിക്കുറച്ച നടപടി ന്യൂനപക്ഷ സമൂഹത്തോടുള്ള കടുത്ത വഞ്ചനയാണെന്ന് പെന്തകോസ്ത് കൗൺസിൽ ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ കേരളാ സ്റ്റേറ്റ് സംസ്ഥാന കമ്മിറ്റി അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടു. ജോസഫ് മുണ്ടശേരി സ്കോളർഷിപ്പിൽ 2.62 കോടിയും വിദേശ സ്കോളർഷിപ്പിൽ 85 ലക്ഷവും എ പി ജെ അബ്ദുൽകലാം സ്കോളർഷിപ്പിൽ 41 ലക്ഷവുമാണ് വെട്ടിക്കുറച്ചത്. മാത്രമല്ല സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ അവശരരും പാർശ്വവൽക്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട വരുമായ ദുർബ്ബല ജനവിഭാഗങ്ങളുടെ ക്ഷേമ പദ്ധതികളിലെ വിവിധതരം സഹായങ്ങൾക്ക് നീക്കിവച്ചിരുന്ന കോടിക്കണക്കിന് രൂപയാണ് വെട്ടിക്കുറച്ചത്. ഭരണാനുമതി നൽകിയ പല പദ്ധതികളും പൂർണ്ണമായും ഒഴിവാക്കിയ സ്ഥിതിയാണുള്ളത്.
സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് സാമ്പത്തീക പ്രതിസന്ധിയില്ലെന്ന് ധനമന്ത്രി ആവർത്തിച്ച് പറയുമ്പോഴും സാധാരണക്കാരായ വിദ്യാർഥികളുടെ സ്കോളർഷിപ്പ് മാത്രം വെട്ടിക്കുറച്ചത് എന്തിനാണ്?. അനാവശ്യ ചെലവുകളും ധൂർത്തും ഒഴിവാക്കി ക്ഷേമപദ്ധതികളും പാവപ്പെട്ട വിദ്യാർഥികളുടെ ആനുകൂല്യങ്ങളും മുൻഗണന നൽകി നടപ്പിലാക്കണമെന്ന് പിസിഐ സ്റ്റേറ്റ് കമ്മിറ്റി പ്രമേയത്തിലൂടെ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
പിസിഐ സ്റ്റേറ്റ് പ്രസിഡൻ്റ് പാസ്റ്റർ നോബിൾ പി തോമസ് അധ്യക്ഷത വഹിച്ചു. ജനറൽ സെക്രട്ടറി ജെയ്സ് പാണ്ടനാട് പ്രമേയം അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു.
