A bill passed by Texas lawmakers would allow teachers and school employees to pray or engage in religious speech while on duty in public schools.
Senate Bill 965, which passed with a 22-9 party-line vote in the Republican-led chamber, states “the right of an employee of a school district or open-enrollment charter school to engage in religious speech or prayer while on duty may not be infringed on by the district or school or another state governmental entity” with narrow exceptions.
Currently, Texas law affirms the right of public school students to pray in public schools as long as participation in that prayer is voluntary, stating that “a person may not require, encourage, or coerce a student to engage in or refrain from such prayer or meditation during any school activity.” The Texas Education Code (TEC) also establishes a school district’s ability to institute a “period of silence” at the start of the first class of each school day, during which a student may have the opportunity to “reflect or meditate” as they see fit.
The legislation, authored by Republican state Sen. Tan Parker of Flower Mound, comes in the wake of a 2022 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, which affirmed a Washington high school football coach’s right to pray on the field during and after games, citing protections under the First Amendment’s Free Exercise and Free Speech clauses.
If passed, SB 965 would enable any school employee to join students in prayer or meditation.
Democratic opponents of the bill, like state Sen. Nathan Johnson of Dallas, argue that the Kennedy v. Bremerton ruling makes the passage of SB 965 unnecessary.
“I submit that Senate Bill 965 is not merely trying to codify a Supreme Court ruling,” Johnson said during the debate Tuesday. “If we were just codifying a ruling, we wouldn’t need a bill, because it’s already the law of the land.”
The bill now heads to the Texas House of Representatives for further consideration.
Parker says that SB 965 simply codifies this ruling into Texas law and “aligns with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision supporting public school employees’ religious freedoms.” SB 965 is part of a broader push by Republican lawmakers in Texas to expand the role of religion in public schools. Other bills awaiting action in the Texas House include measures to require the display of the Ten Commandments in every classroom and to permit prayer or Bible readings during the school day.
In February, Republican state Sen. Phil King introduced a bill that would require public schools to display the Ten Commandments and mandate time during the school day specifically for students to read the Bible.
Oklahoma recently joined Texas with legislation to introduce prayer into classrooms, a move met by the Wisconsin-based atheist legal group, the Freedom From Religion Foundation, which sent a cease-and-desist demand letter to Achille Public Schools last December over a policy that allows students to say prayers during morning announcements.

What if sunlight could be bought and sold like electricity? A US-based space startup is working on a plan that sounds straight out of science fiction: Launching giant mirrors into space to reflect sunlight back on to Earth after dark. The plan of California-based Reflect Orbital is to turn sunlight into an on-demand service, which can help solar farms generate electricity for longer, illuminate disaster-hit areas and help in rescue mission. The company has entered into agreement with India’s Skyroot Aerospace for two rocket launches to test the technology.
However, the ambitious idea has also raised concerns among astronomers and environmentalists about its impact on the night sky.
What Is The Plan?
Reflect Orbital intends to send 18×18 metre mirrors in low-earth orbit (LEO) that can be steered to give sunlight in intended areas even after the Sun has disappeared.
The demonstration mirrors will reflect the light on to a patch roughly five kilometres across. The company will keep adjusting the steerable mirrors in position to keep the sunlight in areas for which customers have paid.
The inaugural mission is targeted for the second quarter of 2027.
An Ambitious Plan
Reflect Orbital plans to have 50,000 satellites by 2035. It says the reflected light will be comparable to moonlight and will become brighter and last longer as the fleet grows.
The project will use the demostration satellite Earendil-1 and will allow customers to choose the area using their apps.
One Problem: The Atmosphere
A peer-reviewed study published in August 2025 modelled what happens when reflected sunlight passes through our atmosphere. Molecules and aerosols scatter some of the light beam across the surrounding sky. Light reaching the ground is reflected upwards and then scattered again.
It will cause the light to affect a much wider area than intended. If the mirrors are placed even 14 kilometres away, the resulting glow on the surface of the Earth will be brighter than a full moon.
This means people affected may not have ordered the light. However, these are predictions based on calculations from a model; the real-life test is awaited.
The company received US regulatory approval in July, but some astronomers and environmental groups have challenged it and urged the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) to cancel it.

Christian Pilot Who Prayed Lord’s Prayer Before Fatal Florida Plane Crash Remembered for Powerful Faith
The heartbreaking final moments of a Florida plane crash that claimed nine lives have taken on an even deeper significance as new details emerge about the Christian pilot who reportedly turned to prayer before the aircraft plunged to the ground.
Capt. Jeff Gregory, 55, was a devoted Christian and a member of Limerick Chapel in Pennsylvania, according to the New York Post. Gregory was piloting the Learjet 60 that crashed Sunday, Nov. 1, in Palm Beach County, Florida, killing everyone aboard.
As the aircraft descended rapidly, Gregory was reportedly heard reciting the Lord’s Prayer while his 20-year-old co-pilot, Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, desperately communicated the unfolding emergency.
Now, the church Gregory called home remembers him not only for his life but also for the eternal hope found in Jesus Christ.
According to the Post, Limerick Chapel notified congregants of Gregory’s death, saying he “went home to be with the Lord when the plane he was flying crashed.”
Gregory’s connection to the church ran deep; both his parents had worked there. He leaves behind his wife, Cheryl, and their three children.
Longtime friend and former neighbor David Peters told The Sun that Gregory had dreamed of becoming a pilot since childhood.
“I know he worked hard to become a pilot and it was something he truly loved and poured his life and heart into,” Peters said.
Peters also remembered Gregory as a diligent and dependable man who took pride in his aviation career.
The devastating crash claimed eight other lives, including Filgueiras and Texas technology entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife, Helen Sharp, and their two young children, Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2. Also killed were Rachael Reed, Charmi Fehr and caregiver Anita Maria Cetina.
According to Fox News, the aircraft was traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when the crew encountered icing and moderate turbulence. Federal investigators are examining weather conditions and preliminary evidence that the aircraft began breaking apart before impact.
As the families and friends of these nine victims face unimaginable grief, Gregory’s church is remembering a man whose faith was reportedly present even in life’s most terrifying moments. During this time, lift up in prayer all those heartbroken by this tragedy.
