Days after Donald Trump defended the H-1B visa programme, Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene said she was introducing a bill to end “the mass replacement of American workers by aggressively phasing out the H1B programme”. Actions against the H-1B programme bode ill for Indian professionals, who are the biggest beneficiary of the temporary work visa. The H-1B is also used as a pathway to American citizenship, through the Green Card route.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, the GOP leader, accused US firms of abusing the programme to undermine the benefits for American workers.
“Big Tech, AI giants, hospitals, and industries across the board have abused the H-1B system to cut out our own people,” she said in a post on X.
“Americans are the most talented people in the world, and I have full faith in the American people. I serve Americans only, and I will ALWAYS put Americans first,” she added.
She said the bill proposes ending the H-1B programme and prioritising American workers in sectors such as technology, healthcare, engineering, and manufacturing.
“My bill ELIMINATES the corrupt H-1B program and puts AMERICANS FIRST again in tech, healthcare, engineering, manufacturing, and every industry that keeps this country running!! If we want the next generation to have the American Dream, we must stop replacing them and start investing in them,” she said in the post.
“Greene’s bill offers one “exemption” for 10,000 visas to be issued per year for medical professionals like doctors and nurses, Greene said. That exemption will be phased out after 10 years, she added.
Greene noted, however, that even the 10,000-per-year cap would be phased out over a decade to provide time to develop a domestic pipeline of American doctors and physicians.
Greene further said that the bill will also “take away the pathway to citizenship, forcing visa holders to return home when their visa expires.
The programme is used by US firms, especially in tech, to import talent, more than 70% of whom are Indian.
DONALD TRUMP’S RARE SHOW OF SUPPORT FOR H-1B VISAS
The development follows Trump’s statement in which he defended the need for the H-1B program during a Fox News interview, stating in part that the US does not possess adequate domestic talent for certain positions in tech and defence.
During the interview, Trump was asked whether his administration would prioritise the H-1B visa programme over fears that it could suppress wages for American workers.
“I agree, but you do also have to bring in talent,” he replied.
When the interviewer interjected and said, “We have plenty of talented workers,” the President quickly shot back, “No, you don’t.”
“You don’t have certain talents. People have to learn. You can’t take people off an unemployment line and say, ‘I’m going to put you into a factory where we’re going to make missiles’,” he added.
The bill, if introduced, will add to ongoing congressional and public debates regarding the future of the H-1B program and broader immigration reform efforts.

An American pastor has been arrested and charged with a crime for praying and peacefully demonstrating on a sidewalk in front of the Chinese embassy in our nation’s capital. His case is now advancing in the courts after a recent arraignment.
The American Center for Law and Justice, which is defending Rev. Patrick Mahoney in the case, contends that the U.S. government acquiesced to demands from China’s communist regime to arrest the pastor.
Shortly after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the U.S., Mahoney was protesting Chinese human rights abuses while standing on American soil, on the public sidewalk outside the embassy.
Mahoney, who is director of the Christian Defense Coalition, has reportedly protested more than 300 times at the exact same spot over the years, and Chinese officials have complained in the past. In 2023, the Secret Service nearly arrested him for protesting there, but the ACLJ intervened and the government backed down.
That’s not what happened on September 28. “Sadly, this time the Chinese delegation was able to persuade the Secret Service to do its bidding and arrest this American pastor right here on American soil. The criminal charge: unlawful entry, as if he were breaking and entering. It’s ridiculous,” Jordan Sekulow of the ACLJ stated.
Not only was Mahoney arrested, but he’s now facing a trial. His arraignment was held last week, on October 21.
He posted on social media, “My own government arrested me for demonstrating and praying on a public sidewalk. Jailed me. Criminally charged me. Ordered me to stay off the public sidewalk and are now criminally prosecuting me in court.”
Mahoney pleaded not guilty, but he reports the DC court issued an order telling him he cannot go back on the public sidewalk near the embassy until the case is decided. The criminal charges against him are moving forward, and his next court date will be November 20.
He’s vowing to keep fighting for his First Amendment rights. “We will never be silenced,” he said.

A new report from the Pew Research Center challenges recent claims of a religious revival in the United States. The study found that religious practice has remained relatively stable since 2020, despite mixed trends among young adults.
According to the report, 34% of U.S. adults attended religious services in person in the past month, while 45% either attended or watched services online. These figures are the highest since Pew began tracking them in July 2020. However, the report highlights mixed signals among young adults, particularly those born between 2004 and 2008, who reported relatively high religious attendance. In contrast, those born between 2000 and 2003 were among the least religious Americans.
The report also found that the youngest men reported greater religious observance than the youngest women, a trend not previously seen in Pew’s surveys. However, researchers cautioned that it remains unclear whether this trend will continue.
EWTN News noted that the youngest Republicans attend religious services at higher rates than older Republicans, but younger Democrats also reported higher levels of attendance than older ones. This suggests that the trend is not limited to one political group.
The Religion Unplugged report emphasized that while the youngest adults show high rates of attendance, their overall religious commitment remains less distinctive. The findings suggest that the notion of a broad-based religious revival among young Americans remains unproven.
