Millions of long-term immigrants in the U.S., including several Indian H-1B professionals, could get a fresh shot at a Green Card. Senator Alex Padilla is reviving a bill that replaces an outdated 1972 cutoff date with a simple seven-year residency requirement. If passed, it could open a new path to permanent residency for over 8 million people.
On Monday, Padilla moved to advance his bill titled “Renewing Immigration Provisions of the Immigration Act of 1929,” first introduced a year ago. The legislation seeks to update the Registry provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act that allows certain long-term residents to apply for a Green Card.
The registry currently only applies to immigrants who have lived in the U.S. since before January 1, 1972. That cutoff date has not been updated in over 50 years, making the provision almost meaningless today. The proposed bill would fix this by replacing the fixed date with a seven-year rule. Under the proposal, immigrants who have lived in the U.S. continuously for at least seven years before applying could become eligible for a Green Card, provided they have no criminal record and meet other standard eligibility requirements.
According to the press release, the change would benefit millions of people nationwide, including Dreamers, individuals with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), children of long-term visa holders, essential workers, and skilled professionals such as H-1B visa holders who have waited years for permanent residency. More than 30 organisations have endorsed the bill.
However, the bill must still pass Congress before the seven-year registry rule becomes a reality. Until then, the existing 1972 cutoff remains in effect, and H-1B holders cannot apply for a Green Card simply by virtue of having lived in the U.S. for seven years.
What It Means for Indians
Indian professionals form the largest group of H-1B visa holders, many facing wait times of 15 years or longer. If this bill eventually becomes law, it could offer many Indian H-1B workers an alternative route to permanent residency that bypasses the employment-based backlog entirely. But for now, this remains a proposal, not policy.

Pastor Arrested for Praying and Protesting Outside Chinese Embassy in DC
An American pastor has been arrested and charged with a crime for praying and peacefully demonstrating on a sidewalk in front of the Chinese embassy in our nation’s capital. His case is now advancing in the courts after a recent arraignment.
The American Center for Law and Justice, which is defending Rev. Patrick Mahoney in the case, contends that the U.S. government acquiesced to demands from China’s communist regime to arrest the pastor.
Shortly after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the U.S., Mahoney was protesting Chinese human rights abuses while standing on American soil, on the public sidewalk outside the embassy.
Mahoney, who is director of the Christian Defense Coalition, has reportedly protested more than 300 times at the exact same spot over the years, and Chinese officials have complained in the past. In 2023, the Secret Service nearly arrested him for protesting there, but the ACLJ intervened and the government backed down.
That’s not what happened on September 28. “Sadly, this time the Chinese delegation was able to persuade the Secret Service to do its bidding and arrest this American pastor right here on American soil. The criminal charge: unlawful entry, as if he were breaking and entering. It’s ridiculous,” Jordan Sekulow of the ACLJ stated.
Not only was Mahoney arrested, but he’s now facing a trial. His arraignment was held last week, on October 21.
He posted on social media, “My own government arrested me for demonstrating and praying on a public sidewalk. Jailed me. Criminally charged me. Ordered me to stay off the public sidewalk and are now criminally prosecuting me in court.”
Mahoney pleaded not guilty, but he reports the DC court issued an order telling him he cannot go back on the public sidewalk near the embassy until the case is decided. The criminal charges against him are moving forward, and his next court date will be November 20.
He’s vowing to keep fighting for his First Amendment rights. “We will never be silenced,” he said.

A new report from the Pew Research Center challenges recent claims of a religious revival in the United States. The study found that religious practice has remained relatively stable since 2020, despite mixed trends among young adults.
According to the report, 34% of U.S. adults attended religious services in person in the past month, while 45% either attended or watched services online. These figures are the highest since Pew began tracking them in July 2020. However, the report highlights mixed signals among young adults, particularly those born between 2004 and 2008, who reported relatively high religious attendance. In contrast, those born between 2000 and 2003 were among the least religious Americans.
The report also found that the youngest men reported greater religious observance than the youngest women, a trend not previously seen in Pew’s surveys. However, researchers cautioned that it remains unclear whether this trend will continue.
EWTN News noted that the youngest Republicans attend religious services at higher rates than older Republicans, but younger Democrats also reported higher levels of attendance than older ones. This suggests that the trend is not limited to one political group.
The Religion Unplugged report emphasized that while the youngest adults show high rates of attendance, their overall religious commitment remains less distinctive. The findings suggest that the notion of a broad-based religious revival among young Americans remains unproven.
