United Airlines is raising checked bag fees by $10 to $50 for travelers purchasing tickets starting Friday, the company confirmed to FOX Business on Thursday.
The increase, which the airline said marks its first bag fee hike in two years, comes after JetBlue announced similar measures in late March.
Customers flying within the U.S., Mexico, Canada and Latin America can expect a $10 increase on first and second checked bags, while the fee for a third bag will jump by an additional $50.
The airline did not specify whether the price increase was tied to higher jet fuel costs stemming from the recent Iran war, which has drastically disrupted global oil markets. However, United CEO Scott Kirby warned in recent weeks that sustained higher jet fuel costs could strain company revenue.
“United is raising first and second checked bag fees by $10 for customers traveling in the U.S., Mexico and Canada and Latin America beginning with tickets purchased Friday, April 3,” the airline said.
Currently, tickets sold through April 2 list prepaid bag fees at $35 for the first bag, $45 for the second, and $150 for the third. Starting Friday, those fees will increase to $45, $55 and $200, respectively.
Similarly, bags paid within 24 hours of travel currently cost $40 for the first bag, $50 for the second and $150 for the third. Starting Friday, those fees will increase to $50, $60 and $200, respectively.
“Customers in most markets will still enjoy a $5 discount if they prepay for their bags online 24 hours before their flight,” the airline said, referring to the first two bags.
The airline emphasized that eligible passengers — such as United Chase credit card holders, MileagePlus Premier members, active military members and travelers in premium cabins — can still check a bag for free.
Earlier in March, Kirby acknowledged the rising pressure from higher jet fuel prices, noting that over the course of a year, the increased costs could exceed twice the company’s most profitable year.
“The reality is, jet fuel prices have more than doubled in the last three weeks,” the CEO wrote in a memo to employees. “If prices stayed at this level, it would mean an extra $11B in annual expense just for jet fuel. For perspective, in United’s best year ever, we made less than $5B. That may sound scary, but the first piece of good news is that, for now at least, demand remains the strongest we’ve ever seen. The 10 biggest booked revenue weeks in our history have been the last 10 weeks.”
Earlier this week, JetBlue Airways also raised its checked bag fees for economy passengers, citing disruptions in global oil supply from the ongoing Iran war. Under the new structure, the first checked bag now costs about $39 on non‑peak days and about $49 during peak travel periods, up roughly $4–$9 compared with previous rates.
When an airline raises fees, competitors often follow. However, there have been no additional indications yet from American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, or Frontier Airlines that they plan to take similar measures.
Fuel costs have surged to multi-year highs after the U.S.–Israel conflict with Iran erupted on Feb. 28, disrupting roughly 20% of the global oil supply that normally flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
As of Thursday, jet fuel in major U.S. markets averaged $4.88 per gallon, up more than 95% from the day before the war began, according to Argus data published by Airlines for America.

Indian Railways ticket checking drive: Indian Railways is set to intensify its ticket-checking drive from today to October 31, 2026, with special attention on the validity and authenticity of passenger tickets. The move comes ahead of the festival season, when passenger traffic is expected to increase. The drive will be carried out by Central Railway and will focus on tickets booked under concessions, specified reservation quotas and various railway passes.

That dream international getaway can become complicated when the rules change after you have already shortlisted your destination. In 2026, Indian travellers may also need to check whether a country still offers visa on arrival or has moved to an e-visa, ETA or another pre-travel process.
According to the latest 2026 roundup, nine countries have changed visa or entry procedures for Indian passport holders. The updates span destinations from Laos and Qatar to Sri Lanka, Iran, Chile, Ghana, Venezuela, Cape Verde and Nicaragua. In some cases, the change involves moving from visa on arrival to an online application, while others involve revised visa categories or digital authorisation systems.
What does this mean for your next holiday? A familiar destination may still be open to Indian tourists, but its entry process could look different from what older travel guides suggest. Here is a look at the nine countries, what has changed and what travellers should check before heading to the airport
Which Countries Have Changed Visa Rules For Indians?
According to a comparison of the 2025 and current Passport Index listings reported by NDTV, these nine countries have changed their visa or entry processes for Indian passport holders. The updates do not all mean stricter rules. Some have moved towards online applications, while others have removed visa-on-arrival access.
Laos
Visa-on-arrival has been replaced by an e-visa. Travellers must apply online and get approval before departure instead of sorting it at the airport.
Qatar
The earlier visa-on-arrival option is gone. Indian citizens now need an e-visa in advance.
Sri Lanka
What was listed as e-visa on arrival in 2025 has changed to an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Approval is required before the trip.
Iran
Visa-on-arrival ended in November 2025. An e-visa is now mandatory.
Chile, Ghana and Venezuela
These three have moved in a more convenient direction. Previously listed as “visa required,” they now offer an e-visa option, making the process fully online.
Cape Verde
From January 1, 2026, the country scrapped visa-on-arrival for citizens of 96 countries, including India. A prior visa is now needed.

In a major overhaul aimed at bringing down fatalities caused by poor driver judgment on roads, Keralam is set to become the first Indian state to introduce a computer-based Hazard Perception Test for driving licence applicants, bringing local standards on a par with several western nations.
The new computer test evaluates an applicant’s ability to spot road hazards in real time before they cause real-world crashes. Transport Commissioner Nagaraju Chakilam has made the test mandatory statewide from December 1.
The decision stems from the recognition that conventional yard and road tests fail to simulate critical risk scenarios. Key safety factors such as navigating sharp curves, driving through heavy downpours, dealing with night-time glare and reacting to sudden pedestrian or animal movement-cannot be safely or reliably recreated during a standard road test.
Under the new format, candidates will sit before a computer screen to watch 10 video clips, each a minute long, featuring up to two potential real-world hazards. Much like an interactive simulation, applicants must click a mouse or tracker the instant they spot a developing hazard, such as a child chasing a ball into the street or a vehicle abruptly pulling out of a side lane.
Out of 100 total marks, full points will be awarded for quick, timely click-responses, while delayed reactions will lead to deductions.
Candidates will have to secure at least 60% (60 marks) to qualify for the practical driving round. The test will expand the state’s driving evaluation into a four-part sequence: online learner’s test (Part I), the 30-day waiting period, computer-based Hazard Perception Test (Part II), and finally ground (Part III) and road tests (Part IV).
The initiative has been in the works for the last two years under the transport commissioner’s leadership as part of the MVD’s ‘Mission Zero’ campaign, which was launched in 2024 and targets high-risk groups, including pedestrians, motorcyclists and heavy vehicle drivers, to achieve zero road fatalities by 2040.
To ensure a smooth transition, the department will give people adequate time to adapt to the system. Authorised motor driving schools across the state have been directed to begin hazard perception training using open-source tools. Regional transport officers (RTOs) and joint RTOs will launch statewide inspections on October 1 to ensure driving schools have installed the necessary computer setups.
