15-year-old Indian-American Gitanjali Rao becomes TIME’s first-ever kid of the year
Indian-American Gitanjali Rao, a “brilliant” young scientist and inventor, has been named by TIME magazine as the first-ever ‘Kid of the Year’ for her “astonishing work using technology to tackle issues ranging from contaminated drinking water to opioid addiction and cyberbullying.”
“The world belongs to those who shape it. And however uncertain that world may feel at a given moment, the reassuring reality seems to be that each new generation produces more of what these kids have already achieved: positive impact, in all sizes,” Time said.
Ms. Rao, 15, was selected from a field of more than 5,000 nominees as TIME’s first-ever Kid of the Year. She was interviewed by actor and activist Angelina Jolie for the TIME special.
“Observe, brainstorm, research, build and communicate,” Ms. Rao told about her process during a virtual talk with Ms. Jolie from her home in Colorado.
She spoke about her astonishing work using technology to tackle issues ranging from contaminated drinking water to opioid addiction and cyberbullying, and about her mission to create a global community of young innovators to solve problems the world over.
“Even over video chat, her brilliant mind and generous spirit shone through, along with her inspiring message to other young people: don’t try to fix every problem, just focus on one that excites you,” Time said.
“If I can do it,” she said in the interview, “anybody can do it.”
Ms. Rao said her generation is facing many problems that they have never seen before.
“But then at the same time, we’re facing old problems that still exist. Like, we’re sitting here in the middle of a new global pandemic, and we’re also like still facing human-rights issues. There are problems that we did not create but that we now have to solve, like climate change and cyberbullying with the introduction of technology,” she said.
“I think more than anything right now, we just need to find that one thing we’re passionate about and solve it. Even if it’s something as small as, I want to find an easy way to pick up litter. Everything makes a difference. Don’t feel pressured to come up with something big,” she said.
“When asked when she knew that science was her passion,” Ms. Rao said she always wanted to put a smile on someone’s face. “That was my everyday goal, just to make someone happy. And it soon turned into, How can we bring positivity and community to the place we live?”
Ms. Rao added that she doesn’t look like “your typical scientist.”
“Everything I see on TV is that it’s an older, usually white man as a scientist. It’s weird to me that it was almost like people had assigned roles, regarding like their gender, their age, the colour of their skin. My goal has really shifted not only from creating my own devices to solve the world’s problems, but inspiring others to do the same as well. Because, from personal experience, it’s not easy when you don’t see anyone else like you. So I really want to put out that message: If I can do it, you can do it, and anyone can do it,” she said.
She said when she was in second or third grade, she started thinking about how she can use science and technology to create social change. She said she was 10 when she told her parents that she wanted to research carbon nanotube sensor technology at the Denver Water Quality Research Lab.
When asked by Ms. Jolie if Ms. Rao does things that kids her age do, she said: “actually I spend more time doing 15-year-old things during the quarantine. I bake an ungodly amount. It’s not good, but it’s baking. And, like, it’s science too.”

തിരുവനന്തപുരം പാലോടിനു സമീപമുള്ള കാഞ്ചിനടയെന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തിലാണ് ഹരികുമാർ ജനിച്ചത്. അച്ഛൻ രാമകൃഷ്ണപിള്ള, അമ്മ അമ്മുക്കുട്ടിയമ്മ. ഭരതന്നൂർ സ്കൂളിലായിരുന്നു പത്താം ക്ലാസ് വരെയുള്ള പഠനം. പിന്നീട് തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് സിവിൽ എൻജിനീയറിങ് പഠിച്ചു. കുട്ടിക്കാലത്തുതന്നെ വായനയിൽ കമ്പമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. എട്ടു കിലോമീറ്റർ നടന്നുപോയി ലൈബ്രറിയിൽനിന്നു പുസ്തകമെടുത്തായിരുന്നു വായന. പത്താം ക്ലാസിലെത്തിയപ്പോഴേക്കും മിക്ക ലോക ക്ലാസിക്കുകളുടെയും വിവർത്തനങ്ങൾ വായിച്ചിരുന്നു. അതായിരുന്നു ഒരു കലാകാരൻ എന്ന നിലയിൽ ഹരികുമാറിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനം സൃഷ്ടിച്ചത്. അക്കാലത്തുതന്നെ സിനിമയോടും പ്രിയം തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. സംവിധായകനാകണമെന്ന ആഗ്രഹം അന്നേയുണ്ടായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് ഹരികുമാർ പിന്നീടു പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്.
എൻജിനീയറിങ് പഠനത്തിനായി തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് എത്തിയപ്പോൾ സിനിമാകാഴ്ച കുറച്ചുകൂടി സജീവമായി. ചിത്രലേഖ ഫിലിം സൊസൈറ്റിയുടെ ചലച്ചിത്ര പ്രദർശങ്ങൾ പതിവായി കണ്ടിരുന്നു. അസിസ്റ്റന്റ് എൻജിനീയറായി ജോലി കിട്ടി കൊല്ലത്തെത്തിയപ്പോൾ സംവേദന ഫിലിം ഫോറത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി. അവയെല്ലാം പിൽക്കാലത്ത് ഹരികുമാർ എന്ന സംവിധായകനെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നതിൽ വലിയ പങ്കു വഹിച്ചു. 1981 ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ ആമ്പൽപൂവാണ് ഹരികുമാറിന്റെ ആദ്യചിത്രം. 2022 ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ, എം.മുകുന്ദന്റെ ചെറുകഥയെ ആസ്പദമാക്കിയെടുത്ത ഓട്ടോറിക്ഷക്കാരന്റെ ഭാര്യ ആണ് അവസാന സിനിമ.

1980ൽ ഉണർത്ത് പാട്ട് എന്ന സിനിമയിൽ ആദ്യമായി അഭിനയിച്ചെങ്കിലും ചിത്രം റിലീസായില്ല. പിന്നീട് 1982ൽ റിലീസായ ചില്ല് എന്ന മലയാള ചലച്ചിത്രത്തിലൂടെയാണ് സിനിമാരംഗത്ത് സജീവമായത്. രാജാവിന്റെ മകൻ, അപ്പു, ഇൻസ്‌പെക്ടർ ബൽറാം, കിരീടം, ആദ്യത്തെ കൺമണി, തച്ചോളി വർഗീസ് ചേകവർ, സ്ഫടികം, മാനത്തെ കൊട്ടാരം, പ്രിയം തുടങ്ങി നിരവധി സിനിമകളിൽ അഭിനയിച്ചു. കഴിഞ്ഞ വർഷം പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ പൂക്കാലമാണ് അവസാനമായി അഭിനയിച്ച ചിത്രം. പ്രമാണി ഇന്ദുലേഖ, സ്വാതി തിരുനാൾ തുടങ്ങിയ നാടകങ്ങളിലും കനകലത അഭിനയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

Country Star Credits God After Revealing He ‘Died Two Times’ During Heart Attack: ‘The Lord Had More For Me to Do’
A country star who suffered a heart attack last month says he died two times and was brought back to life, despite doctors reportedly believing he had just a 0.1% chance of survival.
Colt Ford, whose real name is Jason Farris Brown, told the “Big D & Bubba” show about his traumatic, near-death experience after an April 4 performance in Phoenix, Arizona.
Commenting on his survival, Ford said he believes God still has plans for his life, Fox News reported.
“The Lord had more for me to do, more music for me to make, hopefully more differences to make in some people’s lives,” Ford told the show, detailing how the experience changed him. “It’s been life-changing. It’s been spiritually changing. Obviously, it’s been physically changing.”
The “Slow Ride” singer said he’s still not totally out of the woods and needs to take care of himself as he journeys through recovery.
Ford also shared some shocking details about the night of the incident. Although he explained he has no recollection of even performing, he did recount later walking back to his bus and texting his fiancée.
“I walked back to the bus, texted my fiancée, ‘Hi baby,’ and fell over dead,” he said. “I died two times. Luckily, my band came out to check on me.”
In the end, Ford was rescued and doctors were able to save his life. He told the “Big D & Bubba” show he believes the Lord had him in the right place at the right time, considering the much-needed medical care he was able to receive.
“God could not have had me in a better place,” he said.
It’s not entirely surprising the singer is bringing up God during his recovery. His official bio references his love for the Lord and America.
“Colt Ford is about God, family, friends, and America,” the performer proclaims.” I’m just a guy who loves life. I love people.”
In recent years, Ford has also battled eye cancer, which he overcame, and Myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disorder. Continue to pray for Ford as he navigates healing from this latest health ordeal.
