L0 സീരീസ് എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ മാഗ്‌ലെവ് ട്രെയിൻ മണിക്കൂറിൽ 603.5 കിലോമീറ്റർ വേഗത കൈവരിക്കാൻ ശേഷിയുള്ളതാണ്. നിലവിൽ ചൈനയുടെ ഷാങ്ഹായ് മാഗ്‌ലെവ് ആണ് ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വേഗതയേറിയ ട്രെയിൻ. മണിക്കൂറിൽ 460.2 കിലോമീറ്റർ വേഗത പടിക്കാൻ കഴിവുള്ളതാണ് ഷാങ്ഹായ് മാഗ്‌ലെവ്. ഇതിനെ മറികടക്കുക എന്നതാണ് ജപ്പാന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യം.

യൂറോപ്പിലെ ഏറ്റവും വേഗതയേറിയ ട്രെയിനുകൾ ഫ്രഞ്ച് ടിജിവിയും, ഇറ്റാലിയൻ എജിവി ഇറ്റാലോയുമാണ്. ഇവ മണിക്കൂറിൽ യഥാക്രമം 306 കിലോമീറ്ററും 354 കിലോമീറ്ററും വേഗതയാണ് കൈവരിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ ട്രെയിനുകളുടെ ഏതാണ്ട് ഇരട്ടി വേഗതയാണ് ജപ്പാൻ പദ്ധതിയിടുന്നത്. ടോക്കിയോയ്ക്കും നഗോയയ്ക്കും ഇടയിലുള്ള യാത്രാസമയം വെറും 40 മിനിറ്റായി കുറയ്ക്കാൻ L0 സീരീസ് ട്രെയിൻ ലക്ഷ്യമിടുന്നു. ഈ പദ്ധതിക്ക് ഏകദേശം 52 ബില്യൺ പൗണ്ട് (59.9 ബില്യൺ യൂറോ) ചെലവ് വരും. 2034 നും 2035 നും ഇടയിൽ ട്രെയിൻ പാളത്തിലിറങ്ങുമെന്നാണ് പറയുന്നത്.

The Trump administration has cancelled more than 100,000 visas since President Donald Trump came back to the White House last year, the US State Department said on Monday. Officials said this is the highest number of visa cancellations ever recorded in such a short time. The move is part of the administration’s strict immigration push, which has already led to a large number of deportations. This also includes people who were living in the US legally and held valid visas.

According to the State Department, the scale of visa cancellations shows just how wide the immigration crackdown has become. Since taking office again, the Trump administration has deported a record number of migrants.

At the same time, the government has made it harder to get new visas. Officials have tightened background checks, imposed new screening processes, and increased monitoring of applicants’ social media activity. In a post on X, the State Department said that over 100,000 visas have now been revoked. This includes around 8,000 student visas and about 2,500 specialised visas. By August 2025, the department was reviewing the status of around 55 million foreign nationals with valid visas.

“Specialised visas” are work visas for highly skilled professionals, like H-1B, L-1B, and O-1, given to people with advanced technical skills or extraordinary talent. The 2,500 revocations hit individuals in these categories who had run-ins with the law, including offences like drunk driving, assault, or theft, according to State Department deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott. He added that visa cancellations have risen dramatically, marking a 150% increase compared to 2024.

The department said it would continue deporting such individuals, saying the steps are meant to keep the country safe. Meanwhile, Trump administration officials have also warned that student visa holders and even permanent residents with green cards could face deportation if they are seen supporting Palestinians or criticising Israel’s actions in the Gaza war.

The State Department has also set up a new Continuous Vetting Centre. The goal of this centre is to constantly monitor foreign nationals living in the US and make sure they are following American laws. Pigott said visas would be cancelled for anyone seen as a threat to US citizens.

Back in November, the State Department had said it had cancelled around 80,000 non-immigrant visas since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025. Those cases involved offences such as drunk driving, assault, and theft.

This year, the State Department issued instructions to US diplomats working abroad. They were told to closely examine visa applicants who Washington may consider hostile to the US. Special attention is being given to applicants with a history of political activism.

By December 2025, the State Department confirmed that over 95,000 visas had been cancelled so far that year. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has repeatedly reminded foreigners that a US visa is a privilege, not a right.

Foreign nationals applying for a visa to live in the US might be rejected if they have health conditions such as diabetes or obesity, according to a government directive issued by the Trump administration on Thursday.

The guidelines were issued by the State Department, which says that people with issues could become a “public charge” and potentially drain the US resources. The guidelines were sent through cable to American embassies and consulates, reported KFF Health News, based in Washington.

While screening for communicable diseases, checking vaccination history, infectious diseases and mental health conditions have always been part of the visa application process; the new guidelines add new medical conditions to be considered.

According to the report, the cable says, “You must consider an applicant’s health. Certain medical conditions – including, but not limited to, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, cancers, diabetes, metabolic diseases, neurological diseases, and mental health conditions – can require hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of care.”

Visa officers have also been instructed to assess if applicants are capable of paying for the medical treatment.

However, a senior attorney for the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, a nonprofit legal aid group, Charles Wheeler, has said that although the guidelines are for all visas, it will likely be used only for permanent residency cases.

“Does the applicant have adequate financial resources to cover the costs of such care over his entire expected lifespan without seeking public cash assistance or long-term institutionalisation at government expense?” the cable says.

Noting a potential complication with visa officers being directed to develop their own thoughts about medical issues, Wheeler said, “That’s troubling because they’re not medically trained, they have no experience in this area, and they shouldn’t be making projections based on their own personal knowledge or bias.”

Apart from the applications, the guidance also directs visa officers to assess the health of family members such as children or older parents. “Do any of the dependents have disabilities, chronic medical conditions, or other special needs and require care such that the applicant cannot maintain employment?” it says.

Sophia Genovese, an immigration lawyer at Georgetown University, said that the guidelines encourage visa officers to speculate on the cost of applicants’ medical care and their ability to get employed in the US, judging by their medical history, according to the KFF report.
