Armed mob attacks tribal Christians in India, burns their Bibles and attempts to rape young woman
Amid tensions in southern parts of the east Indian state of Chhattisgarh, a mob of 50 people armed with homemade weapons attacked a community of 100 Christians, injuring at least 27, and attempted to rape a young woman, according to persecution watchdogs.
The Christians were attacked after midnight on Nov. 24, hours after they held a meeting to plan the observance of the Advent season and to celebrate the birth of a child in their community in Singawaram village of Sukma district in southern Chhattisgarh, the U.K.-based Christians Solidarity Worldwide reported.
The mob, comprised of men from the same tribe who were not Christian, also burned Bibles and damaged motorcycles belonging to the Christians, CSW said, adding that the attackers accused the Christians of destroying the local culture by practicing a foreign religion.
The U.S.-based Morning Star News, which reports on Christian persecution worldwide, said the attackers were carrying bamboo sticks, iron rods, bows and arrows, and iron sickles. They attacked a home, where about 25 friends and family were sleeping, as well as an adjoining church hall, where about 30 Christians were sleeping, it added.
“They beat up the children as well as the women who were cooking food outside,” a 21-year-old survivor, Laxman Mandavi, was quoted as saying. “While the children were beaten up with hands and feet, the others were shot at with arrows and beaten up with iron rods.”
Mandavi said four of the attackers attempted to rape a young Christian woman whom they found in a room. “The attackers surrounded an unmarried sister and tore her clothes, attempting to rape her. When she started screaming loudly, they dragged her outside and beat her black and blue. She sustained severe internal injuries.”
Another victim, 24-year-old Laxshu Madkam, was quoted as saying: “It was complete mayhem, and people were running to save their lives. I received two cuts on my back. My motorbike was broken. The attackers broke 10 more motorbikes. They pulled the petrol pipes out of 20 more bikes and let the fuel flow.”
Mandavi said some villagers had threatened his father about two months ago. “They planned to attack us, and nearly two months ago had even threatened that they will beat us. We know and recognize everyone who attacked us. Our relationship with them has been cordial historically, but we suspect that outsiders have provoked them against us.”
In three separate attacks, tribal villagers vandalized 16 houses belonging to Christians from the same tribe and attacked at least one tribal Christian woman, according to StoriesAsia, which said most of the Christian women in those villages had been living alone as male family members had fled into jungles for safety at the time.
The Bilaspur High Court later passed an order in a Public Interest Litigation filed by 12 Christians to seek security for the displaced Christians, the U.S.-based persecution watchdog International Christian Concern reported at the time.
“A few men attacked me and tore my clothes,” a Christian woman was quoted as saying.
“I kept pleading with them but they kept beating me. My only fault was that I follow Christianity,” said another woman.
Tensions in the villages in Kondagaon began after a local tribal priest, identified as Lakum Poyam, claimed that a goddess of the tribe had claimed ownership over those villages.
“Our deity has ordered that all the tribal people in the neighboring villages be united together. I participated in all the meetings where the conversion of Christians to Hinduism was planned. I have been telling the villagers about our goddess’ order for a while,” Poyam told StoriesAsia.
“I have a worship room in my house with a wooden structure in it. During the annual festival in the village, the goddess possesses the most suitable young man, who then carries that piece of wood. The wood then leads the man to a village, and the goddess then becomes the owner of that village,” he added.
“This shows that the ancestors of all these villages were the same. So how can anyone in those villages even think of practicing other religions?”
The attacks against tribal Christians are taking place amid radical Hindu groups’ campaign to stop the country’s tribal, or indigenous, people from converting to Christianity. These groups have been demanding that the government ban those who convert from receiving education and employment opportunities.
Most tribals do not identify as Hindus; they have diverse religious practices and many worship nature. However, the government’s Census deems them to be Hindu.
India is ranked at No. 10 on Open Doors’ 2020 World Watch List of the countries where it’s most difficult to be a Christian. Open Doors notes that converts to Christianity from a Hindu background are “especially vulnerable to persecution” and are constantly under pressure to return to Hinduism.

ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഉറ്റവരും സ്നേഹിതരും കൈവിട്ടാലും കൈവിടാത്ത ദൈവം ആണ് നമ്മുടെ ദൈവം. ഭൂമിയിലെ ബന്ധങ്ങളിൽ ഏറ്റവും പവിത്രമായ ബന്ധമാണ് അമ്മയും കുഞ്ഞും തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധം. അമ്മ തന്റെ കുഞ്ഞിനെ മറന്നാലും ആ കുഞ്ഞിനെ ദൈവം മറക്കുകില്ല എന്നാണ് ദൈവം അരുളിച്ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സ്നേഹം അമ്മയുടെ സ്നേഹത്തേക്കാൾ വലുതാണ്. സൃഷ്‌ടിച്ച ദൈവത്തിന് ഒരുനാളും നമ്മെ കൈവിട്ടു കടന്നു പോകുവാൻ സാധ്യമല്ല. കൂരിരുൾ താഴ്‌വരയിലൂടെ നാം നടന്നാലും, അവിടുന്ന് നമ്മോടു കൂടെ നടക്കുന്നവനാണ് നമ്മുടെ ദൈവം.
ദൈവം നമ്മെ ഒരിക്കലും ഒറ്റയ്ക്കാക്കി മാറി നിൽക്കുന്നില്ല; മറിച്ച്, നമ്മോടുകൂടെ സദാ ആയിരിക്കുവാൻ അവിടുത്തെ ഏകജാതനെ നമുക്കായി നൽകി, അവന്റെ പേര് ഇമ്മാനുവേൽ എന്നാണ്. ഇമ്മാനുവേൽ എന്ന പേരിന്റെ അർത്ഥം ദൈവം നമ്മോടുകൂടെ ഉണ്ട് എന്നാണ്. നമ്മോടു കൂടെയുള്ള ദൈവം ഒരിക്കലും നമ്മെ തനിച്ചാക്കി മാറി നിൽക്കുന്നില്ല. നമുക്കുചുറ്റും നടക്കുന്നതെല്ലാം നിശ്ചയമായും ദൈവം കാണുന്നു. നാം നമ്മുടെ പ്രതിസന്ധികളെ കാണുന്നതു പോലെതന്നെ അവിടുന്ന് അവയെ കാണുന്നു. ജീവിതത്തിൽ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവർ പലരും നമ്മളെ പ്രതിസന്ധിഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ കൈവിട്ടേക്കാം എന്നാൽ കർത്താവ് നമ്മളെ ഒരു പ്രതിസന്ധിയിലും കൈവിടാതെ നമ്മളെ ചേർത്ത് പിടിക്കുന്ന ദൈവം ആണ്.
ജീവിതത്തിൽ പലപ്പോഴും നമ്മുടെ പ്രതിസന്ധി കാലഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ നമുക്ക് തോന്നിയേക്കാം ദൈവം നമ്മുടെ കൂടെ ഇല്ലെന്ന് എന്നാൽ ദൈവം നമ്മുടെ കൂടെ തന്നെ ഉണ്ട് അവൻ നമ്മെ ഒരിക്കലും തനിച്ചാക്കി മാറിനിൽക്കുന്നവനല്ല. നമ്മുടെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ പലപ്പോഴും ദൈവം അനുവദിക്കുന്ന ഒറ്റപ്പെടലുകൾ നേരിടേണ്ടി വന്നേക്കാം എന്നാൽ ഈ ഒറ്റപ്പെടലുകൾ ഒന്നും നമ്മെ തളർത്താൻ അല്ല വളർത്താനാണ്. കർത്താവേ എന്ന ഒരു വിളി മാത്രം മതി അവൻ നമ്മുടെ അടുത്ത് ഓടി എത്തും.

Often, many people view the resurrection of Christ merely as a historical event that supplies us with Christian doctrine without understanding the vast implications it has for believers. The following points attempt to make the implications of the resurrection of Christ more real and practical to us.
1. The resurrection gives me a new personal perspective
When I experienced Christ’s resurrection by receiving Christ as my Lord, my personal values shifted to reflect God’s heart and character. What I once valued as a priority was replaced by the eternal things of the Kingdom.
Where once possessions possessed me, now I own nothing and steward everything.
Where once I wanted to express my persona, now I want Christ in me to shine.
Where once I lived for today, now I live for eternity.
Where once I loved some people a lot, now I love all unconditionally with agape love.
Where once I wanted to live for my purposes, now I endeavor to die to self for His purposes.
2. My new life in Christ gives me a new perspective for the world
Jesus said in John 3:3 that we can see the Kingdom of God when we are born again. Seeing the kingdom involves noticing and understanding God’s design and rule in the created order. I now perceive the world through Christ’s present reign and Lordship over all!
3. My new life in Christ enables me to fulfill my divine calling
When Jesus rose from the dead, He broke the power of Satan and death, thus giving every one of us a chance for ultimate victory despite our past. Every day, we have a chance to make a difference and reach our potential because Christ bore our past failures on His body on the cross. He rose from the dead so we could look to a great future as we share with Him in the newness of life (Romans 6:4-6).
Now, instead of believing in second chances, I believe in an irrevocable calling and election from God (Romans 11:29).
Instead of viewing problems as obstacles, I view them as opportunities to advance His Kingdom.
4. My new life in Christ gives me supernatural access to God
When Jesus was in the world, He walked on water, fed thousands with a few loaves and fish, calmed a storm, and commanded departed human spirits to return to their earthly bodies. Those of us in Christ can tap into the faith that emanates from God that can alter any situation obstructing His kingdom’s purposes. Jesus even told us in Mark 11:23 that our faith can move mountains. First Timothy 2:1-3 speaks about how intercessory prayer for civic leaders can bring peace between nations. My new life in Christ enables me to walk as a king in this life under the King of all Kings, Jesus Christ (Romans 5:17).
5. My new life in Christ joins me to the past, present, and future community of faith
Christ followers are connected to the past, present, and future saints because we are all part of the same spiritual family.
Consequently, what we are building today regarding our church, business, writings, teachings, friendships, family, prayers, and organizations will be those the saints of the future will build upon to hand over to the next generation of Christians.
My prayers are joined together with the billions of prayers the saints have already prayed (John 17; Revelation 5:8).
When I stand up in the arena of faith, I am surrounded by a cloud of many witnesses (Hebrews 12:1).
When I read the Scriptures, I am reading the same letters, laws, songs, and instructions of God’s covenant people from the days of Adam and further.
Instead of individual destiny, I now enjoy corporate purpose.
Instead of being merely an individual sinner, I am now a significant saint!
6. My new life in Christ gives me access to God’s Spirit, who knows all things
According to 1 Corinthians 2:10-12, God gives His Spirit to those who have a new life in Christ so that we can make educated decisions based on God’s knowledge of the future instead of our own. This ability to make prudent choices based on the future is only given to those who walk with Christ and are sensitive to His Spirit.
Truly, hindsight may be 20/20, but foresight is based on walking in the fear of the Lord (Psalm 25:12,14).
Even though I am not omniscient, I can be prescient and prudent (Proverbs 22:3).
Because the past, present, and future are in Him, then my present and future can be ordered by Him (Psalm 37:23).
7. My new life in Christ gives believers internal strength to overcome all temptation
As believers, we have the power of the risen Christ inside of us to live moral and upright lives, fully committed to the fidelity of God’s will. Despite all the distractions, dissenting voices, challenges, and circumstantial obstacles around us, our new life furnishes us with enough ability to walk in life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3-4).
Based on this truth, as long as my priorities are His Kingdom priorities, then my priorities will be His priorities to protect and secure (Matthew 6:9-13). When God’s will becomes my will, then God will strengthen me for His kingdom assignment (Philippians 4:13). When His voice becomes greater than my voice, then my voice will become greater than all other contrary voices (Mark 1:3). When I manifest His will instead of echoing my sentiments, then He will manifest His purpose for me despite other people’s sentiments for or against me.
8. Death no longer has dominion over me
“Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him” (Romans 6:8,9).
This amazing passage assures all believers that death has already been defeated for those in Christ so that they will never taste death-which is eternal separation from God (John 8:52).
In conclusion, since His resurrection resulted in our resurrection, we are already reigning with Him in heavenly places so that throughout eternity, His kindness will manifest to the church (Ephesians 2:4-7).
