ഖാർഗോൺ ജില്ലയിലെ ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ സമൂഹത്തിന് വാർഷിക മത കൺവെൻഷൻ നടത്താൻ മധ്യപ്രദേശ് ഹൈക്കോടതി അനുമതി നൽകി, കോടതി “നിസ്സാരമായ കാരണങ്ങളാൽ” അനുമതി നിഷേധിച്ചതിന് പ്രാദേശിക അധികാരികളെ വിമർശിച്ചു.

ഖാർഗോണിലെ സബ് ഡിവിഷണൽ മജിസ്ട്രേറ്റിന്റെ (എസ്ഡിഎം) ആവർത്തിച്ചുള്ള നിരസനത്തെത്തുടർന്ന് ആത്മിക് ജാഗ്രതി മഹോത്സവത്തിന്റെ (ആത്മീയ ഉണർവ് കൺവെൻഷൻ) സംഘാടകയായ പാസ്റ്റർ ടാന സോളങ്കി ഹൈക്കോടതിയുടെ ഇൻഡോർ ബെഞ്ചിനെ സമീപിച്ചു. അഞ്ച് വർഷത്തിലേറെയായി സമാധാനപരമായി നടന്ന കൺവെൻഷൻ, 2025 മെയ് 16 മുതൽ 18 വരെ ഭഗവാൻപുര തഹ്‌സിലിലെ ഗ്രാം സിർവേലിൽ നടത്താനായിരുന്നു ആദ്യം നിശ്ചയിച്ചിരുന്നത്.

“ഇന്ത്യ-പാകിസ്ഥാൻ സംഘർഷങ്ങൾ” കാരണമായി എസ്ഡിഎം ആദ്യ അപേക്ഷ നിരസിച്ചു. സോളങ്കി പരിപാടി മെയ് 19–21 തീയതികളിലേക്ക് മാറ്റി, പക്ഷേ പരിപാടിയിൽ മതപരിവർത്തനങ്ങൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുമെന്ന ആശങ്കയെത്തുടർന്ന് അധികൃതർ വീണ്ടും അത് നിരസിച്ചു.

ഭരണകൂടത്തിന്റെ വാദത്തെ എതിർത്തു സോളങ്കി ഭരണഘടനയുടെ ആർട്ടിക്കിൾ 226 പ്രകാരം 19898 ലെ റിട്ട് പെറ്റീഷൻ ഫയൽ ചെയ്തു, നിഷേധങ്ങൾ ഏകപക്ഷീയമാണെന്നും സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ മതസ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിനായുള്ള ഭരണഘടനാപരമായ അവകാശത്തെ ലംഘിക്കുന്നതാണെന്നും വാദിച്ചു.

വിഷയം കേട്ട ജസ്റ്റിസ് സുബോധ് അഭ്യങ്കർ, ജൂൺ 16 ലെ ഉത്തരവിൽ പരിപാടി സമാധാനപരമായ ഒരു ട്രാക്ക് റെക്കോർഡ് നേടിയതാണെന്നും ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥർ ഉന്നയിച്ച ആശങ്കകൾക്ക് കാര്യമായ അടിസ്ഥാനമില്ലെന്നും ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി. പുതുക്കിയ തീയതികളോടെ പുതിയ അപേക്ഷ സമർപ്പിക്കാൻ കോടതി സോളങ്കിയോട് നിർദ്ദേശിച്ചു. “അത്തരമൊരു അപേക്ഷ സമർപ്പിക്കുകയാണെങ്കിൽ,” ഉത്തരവിൽ പറയുന്നു, “പ്രതി അത് അനുവദിക്കുകയും ആവശ്യമുള്ളപ്പോൾ ശരിയായ സുരക്ഷ നൽകുകയും വേണം, കൂടാതെ നിസ്സാരമായ കാരണങ്ങളാൽ അത് നിരസിക്കരുത്”.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has allowed the Christian community in Khargone district to go ahead with its annual religious convention, pulling up local authorities for denying permission on what the court called “frivolous grounds”.

Pastor Tana Solanki, organiser of the Atmik Jagrati Mahotsav (Spiritual Awakening Convention), had approached the Indore bench of the High Court after repeated rejections from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Khargone. The convention, held peacefully for over five years, was initially scheduled for 16 to 18 May 2025 in Gram Sirvel, Bhagwanpura Tehsil.

The SDM denied the first application citing “India-Pakistan tensions” as the reason. Solanki postponed the event to 19–21 May, but authorities rejected it again, this time over concerns that the programme could involve religious conversions.

Challenging the administration’s reasoning, Solanki filed Writ Petition 19898 of 2025 under Article 226 of the Constitution, arguing that the denials were arbitrary and violated the community’s constitutional right to religious freedom.

Justice Subodh Abhyankar, who heard the matter, noted in the 16 June order that the programme had a peaceful track record and there was no substantial basis for the apprehensions raised by officials. The court directed Solanki to file a fresh application with revised dates. “If such an application is filed,” the order reads, “the respondent shall allow the same and also provide proper security as and when required, and shall not reject the same on frivolous grounds”.

Advocates involved in the case, including Dr Vivek Pandey representing Solanki, argued that recent refusals reflect a growing trend of denying Christian gatherings on vague or unsubstantiated pretexts. The state, represented by Government Advocate Bhuwan Deshmukh, stated that fresh dates could be considered as per law.

Speaking after the order, Solanki said, “We feel relieved and happy,” and alleged that the administration’s actions were part of a larger strategy to stifle religious freedom under the current pro-Hindu BJP-led state government.

Pastor Kiran Badole, also from Khargone, echoed similar experiences. Speaking to media outlets he said that his own convention was blocked in 2023 over alleged concerns of conversion and law and order, despite no such incidents in previous years.

A separate incident in April saw the High Court intervene to permit a Christian convention in Jhabua district after district authorities denied approval.

Madhya Pradesh is among 12 Indian states with anti-conversion laws. Christian leaders claim these are often misused by right-wing groups to target peaceful gatherings and accuse pastors of forced conversions.

The Ghaziabad Police arrested two men, including a pastor, for allegedly attempting to convert members of the Scheduled Caste (SC) by offering inducements, said officers on Monday. The arrest comes following a complaint by a Bajrang Dal member.

According to police, Pastor Vinod Kunjumon hails from Kerala and currently lives in Sahibabad. The other arrested man is Premchand Jatav, a resident of Rahul Vihar in Ghaziabad. They were arrested on Sunday.

Neighbours, however, said there was no conversion and only prayers were held every Sunday at Jatav’s house.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Wave City, Priyashri Pal, said the arrests were made after police received a complaint from one Prabal Gupta at the Crossings Republik police station on Sunday. “Gupta, in his complaint, alleged the pastor was converting people from SC communities by offering them cash and kind. We have not come to a concrete conclusion yet, but have begun our investigation,” Pal told.

When  visited Rahul Vihar on Monday, the single-storey house, where Gupta alleged religious conversion was taking place, was closed, and its gates were damaged.

Satish Anand, 54, a neighbour, said Jatav built this house nearly 30 years ago. “It is not true that he was converting people,” he said.

“He used to hold prayers on Sunday, and people from Rahul Vihar and Buddh Vihar used to attend it. But he never asked anyone to convert,” added Anand, who runs an eatery in the area.

“Jatav owned a dairy and supplied buffalo milk in the area,” said another resident. “Three years ago, he put up a signboard. Since then, everyone in the area started calling it a church,” she claimed. Gupta, who said he is a member of the Bajrang Dal, claimed he got information that a church was running illegally inside the Rahul Vihar house.

Claiming that Pastor Vinod was carrying out religious conversions at Jatav’s home, he alleged in his complaint, “Premchand converted to Christianity several years ago and used to host weekly Sunday prayer meetings at his home and carry out conversions. These meetings served as a platform for the pastor to approach other individuals and persuade them to change their religion.”

Gupta also alleged that when Bajrang Dal members opposed it, they were attacked.

Station House Officer, Crossings Republik, Preeti Garg, said the FIR was registered under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(3) (threats involving death) 352 (breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and a relevant section of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021.

“We filed a case based on the application under relevant sections and arrested both the accused. Further legal action is being taken and an investigation is underway; legal proceedings will depend on the outcome of evidence collection,” the ACP added.

A Christian wedding in central India turned violent when a group of Hindu extremists attacked guests, leaving several people injured and damaging vehicles.

The incident happened on 11 June in a village in Raipur district, Chhattisgarh. The wedding was being held for a relative of a local pastor. As the celebration was underway, a mob of extremists suddenly arrived and began attacking those present.

Family members of the bride and groom ran for safety. Many locked themselves inside the house to avoid harm. The bride ran into nearby fields to hide, while the groom escaped in another direction.

During the attack, the mob attempted to set a vehicle on fire by pouring petrol on its tyres. They also vandalised several cars and motorbikes parked near the venue. The sudden violence left guests frightened and traumatised.

When some of the victims went to the local police station to ask for help, officers reportedly said they did not have enough personnel to provide protection.

The next morning, the groom’s father returned to the village quietly to collect leftover items from the wedding. Some of the attackers recognised him and gathered again to assault him and two others. All three were badly beaten and had to be taken to hospital.

Local Christians are deeply concerned. They say attacks are increasing, and not just during church services or prayer meetings, but also at weddings and family events. In recent months, Christians in other states like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have faced legal trouble for attending birthday parties, with some pastors facing false accusations in court.

Church leaders, speaking on condition of anonymity, have warned that Christians in Chhattisgarh are no longer safe. They say government authorities are failing to protect the community and are ignoring violations of constitutional rights.
