Christians Throughout India Set to Protest Persecution on June 9

Published

on

India — The Rashtriya Christian Morcha, or the National Christian Front (NCF), organized nationwide protests that will occur on June 9 throughout India in response to the ongoing and escalating violence against Christians.

The NCF, which collaborates with BAMCEF (All India Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation) and Bharat Mukti Morcha for the welfare of Christians, sent a letter to Christian leaders nationwide, urging them to stand united against violence and participate in the rallies.

Apart from the protests, the NCF aims to build solidarity between Christian communities and indigenous peoples of India, like the Schedule Castes (SC), Schedule Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Castes (OBC), all of which are marginalized populations in India.

The National Backward Class Front, National Tribal Unity Council, and National Muslim Front also support the NCF’s efforts to stand for minority religions in Hindu-majority India.

With the tagline of “stand up for justice” and “stand together in faith,” the goal of the protest rally is to get the federal government — the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — to see that Christians are united against the increasing violence and atrocities being perpetrated against them.

“Our Christian brothers and sisters are enduring brutal attacks and growing intolerance from anti-social elements,” a statement issued by the Odisha chapter of NCF said. “This is not merely a Christian issue — it is a grave concern for humanity, for peace, and for the values enshrined in our Constitution.”

Calling upon Christians to rise together, the statement signed by a prominent bishop says, “We call upon you to stand united — for justice, dignity, and the freedom to practice our faith without fear. This rally is not just a protest — it is a movement of hope, a stand for truth, and a call for unity.”

After the June 9 protest rally, a memorandum will be subsequently submitted to India’s president.
BAMCEF and Bharat Mukti Morcha are two prominent non-religious political organizations that are backing the protest rally.

Waman Meshram, the national president of the two organizations, issued a statement saying the protest is against the discrimination and atrocities being committed based on religion against Indian native Christians.

“For this, all the workers of the two organizations are informed that they and all other offshoot wings should join this movement on a large scale and make it successful,” Meshram said.

Three Naga tribal Christians killed in India’s strife-torn Manipur

Published

on

The ongoing fighting among indigenous Christians in northeast India’s violence-wracked Manipur state has claimed three more lives and left two people injured, amid a shutdown demanding action against the previous killings of two Kuki men a week ago.

The fresh killings of Naga men were reported on Nov. 4 from Noney district in an exchange of fire between suspected cadres belonging to two different Naga militant outfits — the Jenchui faction of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF-J) and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah).

Local villagers recovered the bodies of the victims, who have been identified as M Thaimei, G Kamson, and Aihung Khumba, media reports said.

The pre-dawn gunfight prompted security forces to step up search operations in the area by deploying more than 500 state and paramilitary personnel.

“We do not know where we will end up with this kind of brutal killings among us [tribal Christians],” a Church leader who did not want to be named lamented.

He said this time the violence had occurred among rival Naga groups, unlike the past incidents involving Nagas and Kukis, both of them indigenous Christian communities.

“Christians are now facing their biggest challenge from within,” the Church leader told UCA News on Nov. 5, referring to the more than three years of ethnic violence between the predominantly Hindu Meiteis and the indigenous Kuki-Zo, most of whom are Christians.

The violence, which began in May 2023, has claimed over 260 lives and displaced some 60,000 people, many of them indigenous Christians.

Violence among the Kuki and Naga groups began when two Naga men were killed in an ambush on April 18, leading to subsequent attacks and counterattacks from both sides.

“It has resulted in the death of 72 people from both the communities,” the Church leader said.

“We want peace and appeal to leaders from both the communities to end violence and begin dialogue,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), a body of Kuki-Zo communities, extended its ongoing total shutdown, demanding action in the killing of two abducted Kuki youths whose mutilated bodies were recovered on Oct. 31.

The Kuki people accused Naga militant outfits of their abduction and brutal killing, a charge Naga bodies denied.

The shutdown in hilly areas dominated by the Kukis will continue until Nov. 6.

The CoTU warned the government of further intensifying the protest in case it failed to “deliver justice within the extended period.”

Manipur has been in turmoil since May 3, 2023, after a protest against a court-backed move to grant the Meiteis, who are politically and economically influential, official tribal status turned violent.

Church leaders suspected the role of Meitei groups in orchestrating violence among indigenous Christians to break their unity and divert attention from their brutalities, including rape and murder they committed against tribal Christians.

Indigenous Christians account for about 41 percent of Manipur’s 3.2 million people, while Meiteis make up about 53 percent and dominate the state administration.
