കൊച്ചി: ക്രൈസ്തവ വിശ്വാസികൾ ഏറെ പവിത്രമായി കാണുന്ന ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ അന്ത്യ അത്താഴത്തെ വികലമാക്കി ചിത്രീകരിച്ചുവെന്ന ആരോപണത്തെത്തുടർന്ന് കൊച്ചി ബിനാലെയിലെ ചിത്രപ്രദർശനം രണ്ടു ദിവസത്തേക്ക് നിർത്തിവെച്ചു. ‘ഇടം’ എന്ന പേരിൽ ചിത്ര പ്രദർശനം നാടക്കുന്ന കൺവെൻഷൻ സെന്ററിലെ പ്രദർശനമാണ് നിർത്തിവെച്ചത്. ചിത്രത്തിനെതിരെ കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം ശക്തമായ പ്രതിഷേധം ഉയർന്ന സാഹചര്യത്തിലായിരുന്നു നടപടി. ടോം വട്ടക്കുഴിയുടെ ‘ദുവാംഗിയുടെ ദുർമൃത്യു’ എന്ന ചിത്രീകരണത്തിനെതിരെയായിരുന്നു പ്രതിഷേധം. ആവിഷ്കാര സ്വാതന്ത്രമെന്ന് പേരിൽ യേശുക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ അന്ത്യഅത്താഴത്തെ അപമാനിച്ചുവെന്ന് ആരോപിച്ച് സിറോ മലബാർസഭയും രംഗത്തെത്തിയിരുന്നു. ഇതുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് കെസിബിസി ജാഗ്രതാ കമ്മിഷൻ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിക്കും സാംസ്ക്കാരിക മന്ത്രിക്കും പരാതി നൽകുകയും ചെയ്തു. ചിത്ര പ്രദർശനം സംഘടിപ്പിച്ച ഗാലറിക്ക് മുന്നിൽ കോൺഗ്രസ് പ്രതിഷേധം സംഘടിപ്പിച്ചു.

കൊച്ചി ബിനാലെയിൽ പ്രദർശിപ്പിച്ച കലാസൃഷ്ടിക്കെതിരെ കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം എല്‍ഡിഎഫ് ഘടകകക്ഷിയായ കേരള കോൺ​ഗ്രസ് എം രംഗത്തെത്തിയിരുന്നു. ക്രൈസ്തവ വിശ്വാസികൾ വിശുദ്ധമായി കാണുന്ന അന്ത്യഅത്താഴം വളരെ വികലമായി ചിത്രീകരിച്ച് കലാസൃഷ്ടി എന്ന പേരിൽ കൊച്ചി ബിനാലെയിൽ പ്രദർശനം നടത്തിയതായി ശ്രദ്ധയിൽപ്പെട്ടുവെന്ന് ജോസ് കെ. മാണി പറഞ്ഞു. ഇത്തരത്തിൽ ഉള്ള നടപടികൾ പ്രതിഷേധാർഹമാണ്. മതസൗഹാർദ്ദത്തിനു വിരുദ്ധമായ ഇത്തരം പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളിൽ ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടവർ വിട്ടുനിൽക്കുകയും എത്രയും പെട്ടന്ന് ഇതിനെതിരേ നടപടി സ്വീകരിക്കണം. രാജ്യത്ത് ഉടനീളം മതസൗഹാർദ്ദം തകർക്കുന്ന തരത്തിൽ ചില കോണുകളിൽ നിന്നും നിരന്തരമായി ശ്രമങ്ങൾ നടക്കുന്നുവെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം വ്യക്തമാക്കി.

ചിത്രം ക്രൈസ്തവ വിശ്വാസത്തെ അവഹേളിക്കുന്നതാണെന്ന് കാണിച്ച് എറണാകുളം സ്വദേശി തോമസ് ജില്ലാ കളക്ടർക്കും സിറ്റി പോലീസ് കമ്മീഷണർക്കും പരാതി നൽകിയിരുന്നു. 2016-ൽ ഭാഷാപോഷിണി മാസികയിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചപ്പോൾ വലിയ വിവാദങ്ങൾക്ക് വഴിവെച്ച അതേ ചിത്രമാണിതെന്ന് പരാതിക്കാരൻ ആരോപിക്കുന്നു. എന്നാൽ തന്റെ ചിത്രത്തിൽ മതവികാരം വ്രണപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന രീതിയിൽ ഒന്നുമില്ലെന്നാണ് ടോം വട്ടക്കുഴിയുടെ പ്രതികരണം. ‘മൃദുവാംഗിയുടെ അപമൃത്യു’ എന്ന നാടകത്തെ ആസ്പദമാക്കിയാണ് ഈ ചിത്രം സൃഷ്ടിച്ചതെന്നുമാണ് അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞത്.

The Syro-Malabar Church has expressed its strong protest against an artwork allegedly depicting the Last Supper at an exhibition associated with Kochi Muziris Biennale.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Church said the artwork displayed on Mattancherry Bazaar Road presented the Last Supper, one of the most sacred symbols of Christian faith, in a derogatory and distorted manner.
The statement added that the Church viewed the depiction of the Last Supper, which millions of believers consider a symbol of spiritual inspiration, in a mocking way as a violation of basic respect for religious beliefs. The Church said this artwork, published in the Dec 2016 issue of a Malayalam magazine and withdrawn following opposition from believers, was re-exhibited, raising suspicions that it was a deliberate act intended to insult Christian faith.
The Church stated that it had no doubt that artistic freedom is an essential component of a democratic society. However, presentations that mock religious beliefs and distort sacred symbols, thereby hurting the sentiments of believers, cannot be justified in the name of creative freedom. The fundamental principle of a pluralistic society is that freedom of expression should be exercised with responsibility and mutual respect.
The Church urged the authorities concerned to seriously consider the fact that the Christian community was deeply hurt by the incident. Cultural spaces, which should be platforms for healthy dialogue and artistic expression, should not be turned into venues for targeting and dividing any religious group. The Church hoped that the authorities concerned would take just and responsible actions in this matter.
Kerala Latin Catholic Association (KLCA)-Kochi diocese committee lodged a complaint against the artwork with the Kochi police as well. According to KLCA, the biennale should not be turned into a platform for displaying anything in the name of art.
There were suspicions that this was a deliberate move to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of Fort Kochi, which was busy with New Year celebrations, and tarnish the festivities. Therefore, the district collector was requested to intervene in this matter and complaints were lodged with Mattancherry assistant police commissioner and the inspector to take action to remove the controversial artwork, KLCA sources said.
Meanwhile, sources with biennale said that a discussion with the opposing group was likely in the coming days once the New Year celebrations were over.
